Nikon TC-14E III Reviews

Super Sharp.

Bought to extend my new 300mm PF lens to 420mm. First tests; hand holding, of a Heron was impressively sharp. Really pleased with the results.

Good addition to my kit

I am currently using a Nikon D850 and attached this converter to my Nikon 500mm 5.6 lens and photographed a sunset, full moon and some riparian wildlife. It took my 500mm and made it a 700mm...It is nice to have the extra focal length for such a minimal investment...it does soften the image just a tiny bit and I noticed continuous focus was not as quick especially at lower light levels or flat light...but I think it is worth the investment.

Great product

Set up immediately and everything good does what I wanted to get extra reach with my 300mm lens.

A Great Investment

I bought this teleconverter primarily to use with my 500mm F/5.6 PF but also with my 70-200mm F/2.8. I have a TC-17 and while I do occasionally use it, I've never been totally satisfied with the reduction in sharpness and slower focusing. The 500 PF is my sharpest Nikon lens and I didn't want to do anything to compromise it. With the TC-14 and the 500 PF on my Z9 I am seeing no reduction in sharpness or contrast. The AF might be a little slower, but not enough to matter. I get consistently sharp shots of birds in flight. I waited a year for B&H to get this teleconverter in stock and I can. honestly say it was worth the wait. The shot of the moon was hand held. The one of the Heron was also hand held, 15 shots at 20 fps, all except one in razor sharp focus.

I have the TC-14E iii on a Nikon 200-500mm VR, through the FTX adapter into a z7ii. It does, as is well known, lose a stop and a half, but the superior ISO capabilities of the z7ii easily overcome that. From the Exif data, I can clearly see the ISO increase a bit, and the Fstop change, but visually I can barely tell any difference between 500mm native and 700mm with the TC. Just a little bit more reach, but totally worth it, on my gear at least. I'm even going to try the 1.7x next.

Worthwhile Upgrade

Have been using the previous generation (TC-14E II) on all of my telephoto lenses (Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VR II, 300mm f/4 PF, converted Olympus 250mm f/2, Olympus 180mm f/2) for years with great results. This new one (the TC-14E III) is just a little bit better on all fronts...at least through FTZ I and II adapters on my Nikon Z9 and Z7 bodies. Improved autofocus performance, less color aberration, better contrast, tonal range versus the older TC-14E II. It's not a quantum leap improvement in any of these areas but, on a higher resolution sensor, it is noticeable and a worthwhile upgrade.

is this compable with nikon d-850 with nikon 70-200mm f=4?
Asked by: Rahman
The Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III is fully compatible for use with the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR. When paired together, both items would make the lens the equivalent of a 98-280mm f/5.6 lens. As the Nikon D850 DSLR camera may autofocus with lenses that have an equivalent maximum aperture of f/8 or faster, the Nikon 70-200mm f/4G ED VR and the TE-14E III together would be compatible for use on the Nikon D850 DSLR camera.

Yes, the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III is compatible with the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f5.6. And on the D810 and D850 the autofocus will work but it only will use the center focus points.

I have a D500 and am planning to buy 500mm PF. How will the TC1.4 fare in this combination?
Asked by: Rezaul
While the optical results remain pretty great despite TC optics, the autofocus does take a hit in some cases/circumstances. Due to the huge variance in results based on your scenario, your results may vary with the TC, but we believe the trade-off is reasonable/acceptable.

The Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III, is not an "extender" for macro work, the Tele convertor if for lengthening the zoom of a telephoto lens.
