Nikon SR-N10A reviews

SR-N10A Underwater Fiber-Optic Cable Adapter is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it says I think I may be one of the first to review this item. Please keep in mind that I am 5'1 and have tiny hands and fingers, so anything I say about the adaptor's size should be taken within context. Simply put it does what it says. I got it this weekend and tested it out. It's a sturdy piece of plastic that fits the AW1 well. Nothing complicated; just screw it onto the camera and pop the flash. Most buttons are fairly accessible, but any buttons you typically access using your left hand will be a tab harder to reach. I like the fact that it does not need a hex key or Allen key to screw the adaptor onto the camera. It has an easy to grip twist wheel to tighten or loosen the adaptor's fitting onto the AW1. The adapter cannot double as an AW1 grip. Even in my tiny hands, it was hard to maintain a hold without it being mounted to an underwater bracket. The unit is a handy item to protect the pop-up flash, which, to me, seems like the most vulnerable part of the AW1 camera. The adapter doesn't offer much shielding to the rest of the camera (but, being a AW1, shielding for the main parts of the camera is not needed). The adapter is molded to fit around the camera's pop-up flash so that when it goes off, all the light is funneled into the area where the fiber-optic cables are inserted. The funnel also works as a shield, blocking the light from the pop-up flash from interfering with the picture. Above water tests show that it properly triggers an underwater strobe that's set on slave mode. I won't be able to test it in the water for another month.I did not purchase the other Nikon gear in the new N10 underwater set (strobe, bracket, etc...), so you can use the adapter with other brands. I used it with a Sea & Sea fiber-optic cable, mounted it on a Beneath the Surface tray and arm set, and paired it with a Sea & Sea YS-250Pro strobe. It's a funny rigging, given how tiny the adapter-mounted AW1 camera looks next to the YS-250Pro.Whether the item is worth it depends entirely on the person. You theoretically can rig the AW1 with a mask set to shield the light and connect a fiber-optic cable. But, most mask sets are designed to be permanently stuck onto an underwater housing unit. You'd have to figure out how to apply and reapply the mask set onto the AW1 flash each time you use it with a strobe. Plus, you'd have to worry about not damaging or yanking-off the flash if the fiber optic cable got hooked onto something underwater. Handier people could probably figure out ways to construct their own adapters. But, for simpleton, clumsy people like me, the adapter is worth the purchase. It's easy to take on and off, easy to hook it up to fiber-optic cables and bracket sets (nikon-branded or otherwise), and does a good job of shielding, funneling, and protecting the AW1 pop-up flash.
