Vanguard SEDONA 51BL overview

  • 1Description

This tri-colored blue Sedona 51 DSLR Backpack from Vanguard holds a DSLR with an attached lens such as a 70-200mm f/2.8, three additional lenses, and a flash between padded touch-fastened dividers within a detachable camera insert inside the rear-access gear compartment. The backpack features a front zippered pocket for storing up to a 13.3" laptop in a protective case. For your accessories, there is a spacious zippered storage compartment at the top.

There are two side mesh slip pockets that will hold a water bottle to keep you hydrated. Also, together with an attachment strap at the top, one of the mesh slip pockets works as a side tripod attachment. Alternatively, you can attach your tripod to the front of the bag using two straps provided there. There is an ergonomically padded back panel for comfortably carrying the backpack, which features padded shoulder straps with both sternum and waist belts. A top grip handle allows you to quickly grab the backpack on the go, and a removable rain cover protects your gear in unpredictable weather.

For quick-access to your camera gear, fasten the waist belt and remove the shoulder straps to turn your backpack to your front
For attaching additional accessories, there are attachment loops on the shoulder straps and the front of the bag
A 10-point adjustable backpack harness and breathable suspension system provide comfort when carrying your gear for long amounts of time

    Vanguard SEDONA 51BL reviews

Sedona 51 DSLR Backpack (Blue) is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Roomy, Light Weight and Inconspicuous I have been looking for a camera backpack that can also be used as daypack for hiking, biking and etc. The Vanguard line caught my attention because they don't have a label telling everyone that you are carrying expensive camera equipment. The Sedona 51 has plenty of room to carry my gears and still leave space for a jacket or a sweater on top compartment, with water bottle and/or snack pockets on the sides. It has become my carry-on bag for flying, whether I carry camera or not. The only things it should have more are small, zipped pockets inside for various accessories like filters, memory cards, batteries, charger, cables, etc.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good bag with one annoyingly dumb thing Nice bag. I like that it's not TOO padded like most bags are. Nice assortment of attachments and doo-dads, too. Only real complaint is the super, massive, giant, thick-as-the-Earth's-crust divider between the top and bottom sections. Seriously, it's like and inch and a half thick. I can't think of any reason for this whatsoever as the compartment below is already padded. You can remove it, but then you have a single giant compartment with a camera insert in the bottom. Anything smaller than a shoe you put in the top works it's way to the bottom between the camera insert and the pack sides. The divider should be thin (say, unpadded material over a 1/16 rigid sheet of plastic) and seal (via the velcro) the top section from the bottom. I may have to just create that myself.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Happy with this bag. I bought this recently as it was a new arrival and B&H and it showed up in my inbox Thanks for the tempting me B&H!. I graduated from a smaller Tamrac sling bag and was at the point where that bag was stretched in all directions and I had actually damaged one of my lenses by stuffing it in too tight of a space. The Vanguard bag looked like just what I was looking for. When it arrived I eagerly started transplanting all my equipment into the Vanguard. Initial reviews after using it for a wedding and an engagement shoot are as follows: I like the size. Its manageable from a carry standpoint yet has enough room for all of my lenses (70-200 included) as well as my flash. The rear camera access seemed like it might be a problem at first but I am used to it now and lay the camera on it's back for easy access. Zipper quality is very high. Sounds funny I guess but the zippers are super smooth and easy to open. It makes a difference when you have a lens or body in one hand. The straps and clips are high quality and are effective. I do not see anything falling out or off of this bag without some user error involved. My only area of concern so far is the top section of the bah where I keep filters, spare memory cards, batteries etc. It seems like smaller items have started falling down the edges and into the bag itself. I haven't had enough time to experiment with the bag yest to know whether I'm missing something, or it's a design problem. Either way I will update soon when I have a little more use into it, and bump to a 5 if it's my oversight. What I do like is that the bag so far has kept it's shape and stands on it's own. Also the padded sections within the camera section are soft yet secure and I have no concern over the camera getting damaged. Two tripod mounting options however I haven't tried either yet. If you need a larger, manageable, high quality camera bag I would recommend this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for being inconspicuous There are many photo backpacks available from many different manufacturers. What makes this backpack unique is that it can hold a large DSLR body, a 24-70/2.8, a 70-200/2.8, a flash, L bracket and a tripod and/or monopod and other accessories easily and look fairly inconspicuous (assuming that you are not carrying a tripod I managed to disguise a monopod to be inconspicuous). As I live in NYC and take the subway, I wanted a backpack that would not attract unwelcome attention. The khaki color is innocuous and does not scream out that it is an equipment case for expensive equipment. The one improvement that I would like to see is if the vertical outer wall of the removable equipment compartment could be made much more stiff than it is so that it won't collapse as easily from weight that is above (or within it). In fact, making all four outer side walls much more stiff (but keeping the padding) would be most welcome.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not bad, not bad at all First of all, this is very comfortable backpack! After 10 days in Bolivia/Chile and lots of hiking, I can state - this is one of the most comfortable bag what I ever had (and I had quite a few). Proper adjustments, nice padding for back and torso. Everything make wearing this backpack a very pleasant experience. Another good points for this backpack - zippers (!), not many manufactures pays enough attention to sealing and quality of zipper. Vanguard did! No single trace of dust inside, and it is in high wind deserts. Finally - I live side pockets/tripod holder. Finally a bag where I can put something in OPEN side pockets and do not afraid to loose it. Small rubber strings keep it nice and tight. Bottle of water, small items anything are well secured. One of side packets can be used as tripod holder. I have small carbon fiber one and I love Sedona 51! Secured, not wobbling, easy to take out, easy to put in. Simple and very effective. Now the dark side :) It is not mostly about execution but design. I found what having camera compartment on bottom of back back is not the best idea. Because bottom of backpack is most vulnerable for kicking, punching, pressing etc. So, if you are expecting unknown events in your trip, I would seriously consider alternative designs of backpacks. Volume. I travel light. Really light. It doesn't matter 1 day trip of 20-days trip. One carry one item only - backpack with everything what I need in it. So, separation of internal volume in two parts - camera and other stuff is great. I would just change the order and make horizontal divider thinner and more rigid. Because currently it's about 2.5 and occupies space. Bottom line, would I take it for my next trip - answer is 'No' just because of order of compartments. If it's not a show stopper for you - in general it's very decent backpack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Value I bought this bag because of the shape for the weight distribution on my back. Big improvement over my old regular shaped backpack! Nice and roomy for day trips. I was able to fit a full sized DSLR and three lenses in the main area. A set of ND filters in a case fit nicely in top zipped pocket. Inside is nicely padded. Will have to see how it holds up, but so far good quality for the price. Accessing the gear from the back is taking some getting used to. A good alternative to the higher prices camera bags.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice case but... Feels nice and solid. Comfortable to wear. Seems a little on the small side. Can hold camera, a couple of lenses (couple means 2 - otherwise it gets crowded fast) Partitions seem a little flimsy. Take a look at the picture of the interior of the main compartment. The relatively small lens in the upper left corner is collapsing the horizontal partition and is about to fall out. I've ordered a pick and pack replacement insert for a Pelican 1500 case to fill this space to hold things snugly in place.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not What It Is Supposed To Be I purchased this as a hiking backpack and right away realized ti was not heavy duty enough to take that kind of abuse. It also does not have a place for a hydration bladder which it claims to have. Outside of that it was well thought out so I used it for every day photo assignments and it has now fallen apart after 1 year. 2 of the zippers are bad and a small strap that you can use to attach a jacket tore off. This is a pretty pack, but not a functional one.
