Tokina 70-200mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon F-mount Tokina AT-X 70-200mm f/4 PRO FX VCM-S Lens is a telephoto zoom lens designed for both FX and DX sensors and featuring a constant f/4 maximum aperture. Three Super-Low dispersion elements are incorporated within the optical design, which help to reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range while also contributing to sharper imagery with maintained clarity. Multi-layered coatings have also been applied to lens surfaces to suppress lens flare and ghosting for contrast-rich, color-neutral photographs.

A VCM (Vibration Correction Module) image stabilization system has been incorporated within the lens' design to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to three stops to benefit working in difficult lighting conditions and with longer focal length positions. Additionally, a ring-type ultrasonic AF motor is also utilized to deliver fast, precise, and quiet focusing performance that also permits manual fine tuning of the focus position. An internal focusing mechanism is also utilized to maintain the overall lens length during use.

Telephoto zoom lens featuring a constant f/4 maximum aperture for consistent performance throughout the zoom range.
For use on both FX- and DX-format DSLRs; on DX-format sensors the 35mm-equivalent focal length range will be 105-300mm.
Three Super-Low dispersion glass elements have been incorporated within the lens' design to minimize chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and to realize a high degree of sharpness and clarity.
Multi-layer lens coatings reduce lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and maintained color fidelity.
A VCM image stabilization system provides up to three stops of reduction in the appearance of camera shake to benefit working in difficult lighting conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A ring-type ultrasonic AF motor provides fast, precise, and near-silent focusing performance.
AF motor permits fast changing to manual focus for minute adjustment over focus position.
An internal focusing mechanism maintains the overall lens form factor during operation.
A nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth out-of-focus quality, benefitting the use of selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.
An optional TM-705 Removable Tripod Collar is available to better support this lens' use atop a tripod.

    Tokina 70-200mm f/4.0 reviews

    AT-X 70-200mm f/4 PRO FX VCM-S Lens for Nikon is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent LENS - Very Good VALUE Great FX-DX All-Around Portrait-Nature-Wildlife TeleZoom. Works well on my D90, D7100 & D610. Have a wide collection of prime and zoom NIKKOR lenses going back to '79 when I started with Nikon FM 35mm. This is my Sharpest Zoom in this range. Almost as good as any of my primes in this range and better than a few. This will be only my second TOKINA out of 4 non-NIKKOR lenses in my collection. The other being a SIGMA 24-105 f4 I purchased around the same time as well as a Wide Angle TOKINA. So far TOKINA has not disapointed. A bit confusing there is no more of an interest in this LENS since this is a Great BARGAIN and EXCELLENT lens. Especially when compared to many plastic lenses coming out of CHINA from NIKON. If TOKINA, SIGMA, TAMRON and other Brands keep uping their Quality/Value products my, NIKKOR 85mm f1.8G might just be my last NIKKOR lens I ever purchase. (Long-Term Compatibility is not someting I concerned with-for many this is a big issue) Well done TOKINA!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from this lens is most wonderful To start the build quality is great. Strong and solid. For the range that it offers the size is good. Not compact but just right. Image quality is great. The VR features allow for handheld at 1/15 sec. This continues to surprise me at how well it works. For most shooting in good lighting the lens produces even illumination, accurate focus, and very high contrast images. There is little to nothing point out as a con.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice Lens I have just received the lens and run it through some tests in varying light conditions with various apertures and shutter speeds, and I am very impressed. The focusing is quick and accurate, and the image quality is excellent with good color rendition. I am using it on a Nikon D7100. I considered the Nikon 70-200 f4 and the Nikon 80-200 2.8d, along with Tamron and Sigma offerings, but in the end I chose the Tokina based on both my experience with the brand, and my belief that it offered more value for the money. I own both the Tokina 12-28 f4 and the 24-70 f2.8 and have been impressed with the quality of the lens construction and the sharpness of images from both of these. While this lens has not been widely reviewed, in general I agree with the reviews I have seen, which are generally very positive. It is very well built, accurate, and yields sharp images. The image quality is best in the 70-135mm range, but still quite good at 200mm. I have shot it into bright light and have not seen the flaring some reviewers note. It has an impressive lens hood that helps with any side light entering the lens, and I have not seen any problems with flaring. It is, as some have noted, a fairly heavy lens, but for a professional quality optic it is not overly heavy. It balances nicely on my camera. I have not had the opportunity to use the lens indoors shooting theater events, so that is still an unknown, but so far I am very pleased with the lens and highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible performance!!! This lens is a killer lens, it's as sharp as all pro Nikon lenses if not sharper! It's a true quality lens, the image stabilization is great for indoors and low light conditions. Of your shooting in great daylight just turn the image stabilization off. Absolutely Insane performance on my Nikon D500, stellar! For the money it's worth every penny, infact I thought it was going to be expensive but I was wrong, the price is perfect.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A Very Good Lens...But Tried it on my D810. Liked: Image quality, build, close focusing, size and feel, focus speed, and price. I was liking it very much until shooting with the built-in flash. It would focus lock and fire once (sometimes several times) and then then the camera would not fire until the flash was closed. It did this in all focusing modes and zoom settings and with a fresh battery. It worked correctly with an external flash or with flash. The D810 does not do this with any of my other lenses including several Tokinas. Don't know if this is a design flaw or defective lens. Do not want to risk it. The tripod collar is costly and when added to the cost of the lens other options become more attractive. Thank you B & H for the excellent return policy.
