Vello BG-N14 overview

  • 1Description

The BG-N14 Battery Grip from Vello is designed specifically for the Nikon Df DSLR camera and accepts one or two Nikon EN-EL14 or EN-EL14a batteries. With the grip and two batteries your shooting time is effectively doubled.

The design of the grip offers a comfortable and secure way in which to hold your camera when shooting in portrait orientation. An alternate shutter release button facilitates shooting when held vertically, and triggers the camera via the included shutter release cable. It is designed with an anti-slip rubber grip and firm curvature to further improve handling. A tripod socket is located on the underside of the grip, and a holder for the camera's battery door prevents its loss when the grip is on the camera. The BG-N14 is also compatible with the Nikon EP-5A AC power supply, for extended in-studio use.

    Vello BG-N14 reviews

BG-N14 Battery Grip for Nikon Df is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great! I use one of these when I shoot my Df at weddings. It does what I need it to, makes vertical shooting much more comfortable. I compose portraits and details much more easily. The trigger feels as it should and works great. There are some problems that they couldn't really overcome so you can't fault them. There are no front/rear control dials. This being the Df, exposure control happens on top of the camera. Also since it's basically acting like a shutter release cable you need a tiny coupled cable that goes from the grip to the body. It's fine, I'd rather not have it but what can you do? Third, obviously you have to take the grip off just to change cards. I started using a 64gb card and haven't needed to change it over the course of a wedding. The battery life is indeed about double! My main concern was making vertical shooting more comfortable, and it does this for me. I am a happy camper!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Df accessory One of the things I really like about the Df is the lightweight compared to larger full sized Nikon DSLR bodies like the D800 and the D4s. OTOH, even with my small hands there are times that the shortened vertical height comes up a little short in the heel of my hand. I wondered about how the BG-N14 might improve the feel of the Df resting against my palm. The answer: very nicely. It's quite a light unit so doesn't turn the combo into something undesirably heavy AND being able to load two batteries means more power on tap (and not worrying about where the second battery is in my case, or if I brought one that day!). Yeah the small U-shaped cable release adaptor to connect the vertical shutter button is a minor negative but I don't plan to use the vertical button much anyway. I'm into this for changing the shape of the body and getting a second battery, without getting into D4s weight. Recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Grip I am amazed this was one of the few grips available for my Nikon Df. That being said, it works fine...I am surprised it takes two Nikon batteries instead of AAs, but it works fine.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It isn't a precision accessory The first time I installed it in my Df didn't work. I thought to send it back but before I checked with my micro glasses the contacts to be sure where OK but what was my surprise! One of the contacts to the camera was unaligned and obviously too open to do a good connection. Using my micro glasses and a very thin screwdriver I proceed carefully to close the contact blades. It is know working fine but these situation isn't acceptable for a Nikon accessory sold by BH

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A small problem I made heavy use of the grip over several days of shooting. I found it comfortable to hold and it gave me no problems till finding that I had broken one terminal of the short Shutter release cable. Care must be taken when putting the camera down not to bend the camera end terminal. I have yet to-learn how this can be replaced. A warning is needed, or some form od protection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good, but not great, battery grip for the Df The Df has reasonably fine ergonomics for wide and normal lenses, even short teles. But for lenses like the 180/2.8 and longer, the Df doesn't offer enough grip for a solid balance of body and lens. Adding this BG-N14 battery grip to the Df body provides enough extra mass and useful grip to comfortably use long lenses. It is unfortunate Nikon designed the body with no internal provision for a vertical button release on a battery grip, the external short cable is a barely adequate work around. Likewise it is a pain to remove the battery pack to access the SD memory card. No matter, It is more comfortable shooting longer lenses with this battery grip. Nice, too, that it will accommodate dual batteries although the camera doesn't see separate batteries, only extended battery capacity.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Get a grip... VG quality, excellent fit and finish, matching original very well. Shutter connection cable is fiddly, easily damaged I suspect as it protrudes from the end of camera and grip - then again, if you don't often use the vertical shutter button, it can be left off. Improves the feel of the camera and very slightly improves steadiness of shooting with the extra weight. The security of the extra battery life makes it well worth the purchase. Recommended.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Wiil be great for extended shooting opportunities I will use this when I am out on an extensive shoot, but it is missing a critical piece that I do hope will arrive shortly, or it won't work properly for me (i.e. shutter release cable was missing in the box)
