The Neutrino Thunder D3 External Storage Array from Akitio is a two bay storage system that can house 2.5" SATA I to SATA III drives and can be connected via USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt ports to Windows or Mac systems. Simple installation of either hard drives or SSDs can be done via the removable trays without the need for tools. Once drives are installed, they can be software-configured into RAID 0 or 1. RAID 0 shares data between two drives giving you the best performance. RAID 1 stores identical data onto both drives to preserve data if one drive fails. Included with the Neutrino Thunder D3 are a Thunderbolt cable, a USB 3.0 cable, and a power cable.

Neutrino Thunder D3 External Enclosure is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great solid compact Thunderbolt enclosure I purchased this a few weeks ago and put a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD in it. I may add another SSD to it down the road. Right now I'm using it as my boot drive for my Mid-2011 27 iMac. I have an 256GB SSD factory installed that I was booting from, but this combination is faster, with plenty of room. Like others have said the whine of the fan was annoying, so since I was using SSD and wasn't getting hot, I removed the fan for now. I spoke to tech support at Akitio, who told me how to do it. Wasn't hard at all and if I every need to I can reinstall it. It came with a Thunderbolt cable too which I wasn't expecting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product Used to download my cards after each shoot. It is fast and efficient. Draw back is its a little jenky, vibrations, and you feel like it will vibrate apart. They do offer vibration dampeners on request. it seems to be the hard drive cassette holders that move on the inside? Surprisingly quiet operation for the jenky feel of it. All metal build makes be feel like it is durable

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great, getting good speed (comes with thunderbolt cable!) GREAT product, but bad description: 4 Stars since description does not mention the included thunderbolt cable (at the of this writing, hopefully someone at B&H sees this and updates description). I could have saved $30. Getting over 700MB/s read and over 600MB/s write with two 960 SSD. Used mac disk utility by creating stripped (raid 0). Could have also used SoftRaid, but why pay unless you need to monitor the raid health? I prefer to keep constant backups if the raid array fails. Adrien

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Breathes new life into my 2011 iMac! I have a 2011 iMac that is getting a bit long in the tooth. If I run the BlackMagic Disk Speed Test, the 1T hard drive barely eeks out 70MB/s writes. I had previously added a CalDigit thunderbolt dock to try and set up an external SSD boot drive, but I found out that my iMac is too old to boot from the USB-3 ports on the dock. So, I poked around and this was the most reasonable option that would get me an SSD boot drive. I put a Mushkin 1T SSD in and used Carbon Copy Cloner and magic ... speeds 345MB/s write and 383MB/s read, plus it boots! So much faster than the pokey internal HD. The reasons for 4 stars over 5 are: 1. It comes with a Thunderbolt cable, but the description only mentions USB-3. So, I ended up buying an extra TB cable I don't need. 2. The same drive in a USB-3 enclosure attached to a 2015 MacBook Pro gets >400MB/s ... seems to me that it could be faster. 3. The little fan is annoyingly loud, but it can be turned off by opening up the enclosure and pulling the fan plug off the circuit board. Inspite of these short comings, I am really happy with the speed improvement!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fast and well made. Good enclosure, easy to mount SSD's and get going. Speeds are fast enough. Price is a bit high for what it really is, but there doesn't seem to be a better value out there.
