The Formatt-Hitech 82mm Firecrest ND 4.8 Filter is a solid neutral density filter providing a 16-stop reduction in exposure. This 4.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the Schott Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multi-coating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multi-coating is also scratch-resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

ND 4.8 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 16-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.
The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multi-coating is water- and scratch-resistance for greater overall durability.
Schott Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

82mm Firecrest ND 4.8 Filter is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Quality Control - Stay away or inspect it carefully The ND filter I received from B&H had has three bubbles in the glass (or coating) that caused blurring problems with my images. After waiting over 5 weeks for a replacement (back-ordered), I cancelled my replacement order with B&H and bought the same filter from another source. Same problem with on the second filter with the bubbles, plus the second one had a pinhole gap in the coating (which let's through too much light)and uneven coating near the edge of the filter. Two bad filters...I will never buy any of their product again. BTW B+H customer service was great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy from B&H to get a good one Uncharaterstically, I initially purchased one from another vendor. Viewing a straight line reflected off the filter surface showed it was not flat and photographs confirmed it had areas of unacceptable image quality, so I returned it for another. Same problem except the optical defects had different shapes. Returned it. These defective filters came in a cardboard boxes without pictures on front, filters wrapped in red tissue paper (no plasitc filter case) with QC stamed 21 Oct and 22 Oct 2014. Contacted manufacturer who responed they will examine returned filters; possible uneven distribution of bonding material between thin elements of filter (filter is quite light at 18.5 g and is thin). Then I got smart and ordered from B&H. Filter arrives in box with color landscape photo on front, filter in hinged plastic box, QC stamped 22 Dec 2014. Filter is flawless. Very close to 16 stops on testing (see photos) and essentially no color shift. Highly recommed filter and B&H (but you already knew that).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Flawed filter I received it as a gift last year, finally got to use it and am extremely disappointed that mine has a circular flaw just off center, rendering that area out of focus. The flaw is approx 3/8 area which I was able to see in distorted reflections on the lens. Very disappointed that such an expensive filter was not checked thoroughly enough before being sent out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Impression - great filter just took it out once to test. no color cast seen doesn't seem to affect sharpness gives you a great low speed in daylight slim enough for me to stack my CPL (with minor vignetting) will need to use it during an actual photo outing to evaluate fully

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best ND for long exposure I have had Lee, B&W and Formatt 10 ND filters. This is the best so far. Not easily smudged and no color change even for exposure up to 8 minutes. I wish they make one with 10, 6, 3 ND stops.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing! I bought this after using a 10 stop ND for a few years, and was curious about adding an incredible 16 stops! I've been using it on a Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 III lens, and it definitely degrades image quality slightly and has a color cast, that my Hoy 10 stop does not do. But I believe this is the only 16 stopper in the game. So I've been converting images made with this to Black and White, and once resized for web, nobody can tell the difference in image quality.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad quality control I purchased this filter a while ago, but only recently was able to use it. Unfortunately this filter has some serious issues making it totally unusable. While almost entire scene is in focus and sharp, but there are a few bubbles around the image where the image gets blurry. And there aren't clouds or grass or tree. It could be a rock or building - part of the building could be really blurry. Not possible to use this filter at all. Waste of money.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from GOOD filter GOOD quality, Needs a GOOD tripod and Good Glass modern mk II crisp lenses at F8. one CON is it has an Alunimum/white metal Filter Ring instead of the Tuff brass of a B+W ring. Price should be a bit lower for missing on the GOOD ring
