The TC-DB-II Tripod Collar D from Vello is designed for the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens. It makes rotating your camera faster, and improves balance by attaching the lens, rather than the camera, to your tripod or monopod. The thumbscrew on the collar has a built-in locking feature so that it cannot be accidentally opened when you loosen it to rotate your camera.

Alignment marks on the collar allow for quickly changing the orientation from portrait to landscape. You can use either a 3/8"-16 or a 1/4"-20 tripod mount using the included bushing adapter.

Improves Camera/Lens Balance

The collar allows you to attach the lens to your tripod or monopod, instead of your camera, thus reducing stress on the camera's lens mount.

Rotation

Having the camera secured with a ring around the lens makes it possible to rotate the lens between landscape and portrait modes without removing the camera from the tripod. The friction thumbscrews can then be tightened to secure the camera in the desired position. When not needed, the foot can be rotated to an out of the way position.

Safety Lock

The thumbscrew loosens to allow collar rotation, but must be pulled out from the collar in order to remove it from the lens. This prevents accidental drops.

I haven't used a lens collar before, but from my perspective, this collar is very well made. It fits my lens well and works as intended for much less money than the Canon product.

Functionally the same as Canon

The 100mm f/2.8L macro is perhaps not the most popular lens sold, nor the most popular used. Its hard to get sharper results. I read the reviews about this ring here, took a chance, and I'm glad I did! I can be a picky photographer when it comes to gear, really am a Canon fan-boy, but this ring is less than 1/3 the price. Here's what I like: The locking part works EXACTLY like Canon's. You know how the Canon lock sort of cams down to tighten up? This one works the same way. You know how you can pull the Canon knob against a spring to open the ring? This one works the same way (and its a good safety feature). You know the inside of the Canon ring is felt covered to allow adjustment when loose? This one is the same. You know how the Canon ring has a nice staked solid pin that comprises the hinge? This one is the same. You know how the Canon ring has ribs on its tripod mounting surface to help it grab the pad on the tripod's plate? This one is the same. You know how the Canon ring is sort of overbuilt and all metal? This one is the same. You know how the Canon ring has a finish that closely matches the lens? This one is the same. I don't know if the Canon ring has 3/8 and 1/4 tripod thread, but the Vello has a 3/8 thread with a 1/4 bushing. The only bad I can give this ring is so slight its a picayune issue. The edge of the foot section furthest away from the ring part, has a very, very slightly uneven radius symmetry from left to right. Yah, that's how closely I inspected this ring, and that unevenness was probably due to hand finishing the casting to knock the burrs from the edge. I have _ZERO_ issues with this ring. Money very well spent, resulting in high VALUE (= good product vs price paid).

Gotta Grip!

I have always hesitate to buy third party products to compliment high dollar items like the Canon L series Macro lens, but in this case, based on the high price of the Canon collar and the mostly solid reviews I decided to purchase the Vello collar. After a couple of shoots using the Vello collar I am very satisfied with it's performance. It grips the barrel of the lens snugly but not with a crushing force and the quick release makes setting up and moving the tripod a snap without the lens and camera attached. My only complaint would be the texturing on the collar gives it an aftermarket look, but at nearly one quarter the price, the value far outweighs the look.

the spring loaded knob makes it about impossible to accidently drop the lens. Works great with my gimbal head and horizontal mounting center column tripod to do macro.

First class product. even before you consider the value.

So I am a first party manufacturer kind of person but for the occasions I needed a lens foot for my macro lens I just couldn't justify the OEM $200. So on a whim I got this lens Tripod Collar D from Vello. I couldn't be happier, it is a first class product that is effectively indistinguishable from the OEM version, very well made, perfect fit and does everything I expected it to. The finish is basically OEM, the fit and tolerances are perfect, the latch is secure feeling and the lining material where it touches the lens is soft but has a good hold. Absolutely first class product that I couldn't fault regardless of the price. Actually there is one improvement I'd like, why don't the collars have an A/S dovetail machined on the bottom so they'd fit in so many tripod heads without having to buy a plate?

Works just great for the money

Does just what I was expecting. The Canon part is just too many $$$ for what this is and does. No complaints at all.

Holds my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro lens perfectly. no wiggle, shake or any movement. Easy to loosen the ring to rotate the lens to any orientation.

question

Can this collar be used with a Panasonic fz-200?
Asked by: Daniel M.
This collar addresses the issue that the original Canon collar is too expensive and this one is just as good. Regarding the fitment to other lenses, itll depend on the lens diameter. If it it the same as the Canon lens and does not interfere with the operation of the lens, I dont see why you could not use it. Stating the lens diameter would have been helpful in giving a more precise answer.

question

What is the size/diameter of the opening for the lens?
Asked by: Daniel E.
The diameter of the Canon 100 L macro lens at the collar slot is 69mm. It seems you're thinking of using this on a different lens? If so, I'm sure Canon made sure it would not fit on another Canon lens.
