Vello TC-DB-II overview

  • 1Description

The TC-DB-II Tripod Collar D from Vello is designed for the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens. It makes rotating your camera faster, and improves balance by attaching the lens, rather than the camera, to your tripod or monopod. The thumbscrew on the collar has a built-in locking feature so that it cannot be accidentally opened when you loosen it to rotate your camera.

Alignment marks on the collar allow for quickly changing the orientation from portrait to landscape. You can use either a 3/8"-16 or a 1/4"-20 tripod mount using the included bushing adapter.

Improves Camera/Lens Balance
The collar allows you to attach the lens to your tripod or monopod, instead of your camera, thus reducing stress on the camera's lens mount.
Having the camera secured with a ring around the lens makes it possible to rotate the lens between landscape and portrait modes without removing the camera from the tripod. The friction thumbscrews can then be tightened to secure the camera in the desired position. When not needed, the foot can be rotated to an out of the way position.
Safety Lock
The thumbscrew loosens to allow collar rotation, but must be pulled out from the collar in order to remove it from the lens. This prevents accidental drops.

    Vello TC-DB-II reviews

TC-DB-II Tripod Collar D for Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good alternative for the price This tripod collar is not as well made as the grossly overpriced Canon alternative but does the job. This newer bracket has a collar safety lock similar to the Canon design. In addition to counter-clockwise rotation, you must pull out on the release knob to open the lens collar. Also note that this collar mounts perfectly on a Kirk LP-57 Quick Release Plate. The only caveat I would offer is that the release knob only has 1/2 turn of total rotation to tighten or loosen the lens collar. I would not rely on this collar holding a camera + lens combination securely on a tripod or monopod during transport (such as while carrying it over your shoulder).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Like most Vello products I hate giving a product a bad review, but in this case I must speak up. This product like most Vello products are pure unadulterated junk. I tried and tried to make the best of it, but this collar never properly fit my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens. It would not clamp down on the barrel tightly, causing the lens and camera to shift and rotate inside the collar. It took me a long time to learn about their products. Out of the 5-6 Vello products, I have purchased, only one remote is still usable. Save the money and apply it to the real thing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GOOD PRODUCT - GREAT VALUE Best would be if Canon included a tripod collar with their macro lens. Absent that, this Vello collar is well made and does the job just fine, for a whole lot less than the cost of an official Canon collar. The knob pulls out to retract a metal pin which then allows the collar to open. When closing the pin it inserts securely into the movable half of the ring. The pin is eccentric, so when the knob is tightened the pin pulls against its receptacle locking the two halves together tightly around the lens. It is a pretty simple well made product and does what it is supposed to.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Purchased for use on my LUMIX FZ200 This was purchased by recommendation of a fellow in the UK who has extensive use of the Lumix FZ200 Many may well know who that is.). When I had my QR mounted had to remove it to change the SD card and battery. So glad I purchased this! It puts the center of the lens group over center of my tripod and monopod (Great for panoramas!), full access to battery and SD card compartment, makes an excellent stand to minimize the possibility of setting the camera down in any fluids say, at a party and provides a substantial and secure grip point for my large hands. Well worth the money and thanks B&H!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product I was considering previous model but when I finally decided to purchase it was discontinued. So when new model came out I did not hesitate to try.Build quality- I was comparing this ring with one that is on my 70-200 F2.8 II IS USM and ... seems comparable. Definitely less cheap than those replacement rings that you can buy on @. Finishing - well rounded edges with nice feel when you hold in your handsInner ring has some sort of fabric that I can see also in Canon's Tripod Ring D. It is not same as 70-200 F2.8 II IS USM ring which affects the transition from horizontal to vertical orientationErgonomics AS I state above once knob is tightened it is stays in place firmly. when we loose it to allow changing orientation it is not smooth instead it quite tight. Bryan from TDP also reported same tightness in original tripod ring DIn order to remove ring you must loose the knob and pull away which I find nice to prevent accidental lens dropI purchased Wimberley P-20 plate to attach to tripod. It is not perfect fit but does the job well. Buying dedicated plate from RRS might show incompatibility as this ring is 3rd party product. P-20 is just more universalPrice- You can't beat it 49.95$ vs. 172$In my opinion this ring is simply too good to beat

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Vaule and Good Quality Aesthetically appealing and functional, with good quality metal. Locking type twist knob could be better, as it tightens only with a 90 degree twist, not really confidence aspiring, as it will work itself loose. Nevertheless, good that it will not unlock itself completely due to its spring-tensioned knob. Overall, excellent value, only cost a third of the original. Highly recomended !

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Loosy goosey Ring is well made, but does not hold my lens solidly. The slightest touch of the camera makes it rotate inside the ring. It’s just not a tight fit around the lens collar. Sort of defeats the purpose of using a tripod in the first place.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fits right; wish it were more secure Fits just right. I'd feel more confident if it had an extra step to open it. I'm sure for most people, having to pull the knob after loosening the collar is secure enough, but there isn't much tension when pulling. In other words, when loosening the collar to rotate the camera body, pulling a little too hard on the knob could result in disaster. I'd rather have an extra step or latch. Don't forget you'll likely have to pair this with a quick-release plate. I ordered the Sunway which fits RRS; it works fine.
