Vello BG-C11 overview

  • 1Description

The BG-C11 Battery Grip from Vello is designed specifically for the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR. It holds one or two LP-E12 batteries, and therefore can effectively double the camera's normal shooting time.

The design of the battery grip offers a comfortable and secure way in which to hold your DSLR in the vertical position. The BG-C11 comes with an alternate shutter release button to facilitate shooting when held vertically. When the included shutter release cable is connected to your camera, it activates the alternate two-step shutter release button that is conveniently placed for shooting in portrait orientation. An on/off button allows you to disengage the grip's shutter button to prevent accidental firing.

The included IR remote can An included IR remote triggers the camera's shutter through either the sensor on the grip, or using the camera body's sensor when in IR mode, from up to 15'. It is designed with an anti-slip rubber grip and firm curvature to further improve handling. A battery door holder prevents you from losing the door when the grip is in use.

    Vello BG-C11 reviews

BG-C11 Battery Grip for Canon EOS Rebel SL1 is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best accessory IMHO I always get battery grips for the DSLRs and SL1 was no exception. I do lots of sports photography and really use the extra battery life and the vertical shooting shutter button. I recommend to anyone taking lots of vertical photographs. The 4 stars is only because of camera design. The memory card for this camera can only be removed by taking the battery grip off of the camera which is unfortunate (I use the USB cord unless I have a lot of photographs to transfer). I have had good luck with Vello battery grips in the past and like to save a little extra money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolute garbage: batteries won't fit Just bought this grip for my Canon EOS Rebel SL1. I've never bought Vello products before and so I didn't know what to expect quality-wise. I was shocked and disgusted to find out that the original Canon LP-E12 batteries won't fit into the grip's battery chamber and it's impossible to close the battery chamber door with the batteries in. The grip won't even power the camera. Besides, the construction quality of this grip (besides the fact it doesn't work as advertised) is very flimsy and doesn't inspire any confidence at all. Compared to the Canon BG-E2 grip I have for my Canon 30D, this Vello grip is absolutely appalling. If Canon ever makes a dedicated grip for the Rebel SL1 (I doubt it), that's what I'll buy. As far as I'm concerned, the Vello BG-C11 totally sucks and is utterly useless.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fits perfectly Most of the reviewers have covered the pluses/minuses of this product. I mainly bought this to give me more of a gripping surface when handholding the camera. It's especially important when using longer and heavier lenses, not so much with smaller ones. I don't really care about the vertical as flipping the camera for portrait, especially with the small size of the SL1 is not a big deal. The fact that it is cumbersome to replace the SD card with the grip in place is not the fault of the grip but the way the camera is designed. The grip fits perfectly as if it was made by Canon. Yes the grip could be made a bit more sturdy but hey, it was only $ bucks. Overall, it will do what I needed the grip for - extra gripping surface for helping steady the camera when using longer/heavier lenses. The two battery ports is icing on the cake.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Does what it is supposed to, but lacks features. The product is pretty well constructed fits great with the camera and provides more needed grip with the sl1's smaller body. Only downside is that the grip does not come with any exposure adjustment controls on it. When you're shooting it becomes slightly annoying if your lighting changes and you have to rotate back to landscape, make the adjustment then go back to portrait. Other than that it works great!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from BG-C11 Battery Grip for Canon EOS Rebel SL1 by Vello To attach the grip requires the removal of the camera's battery compartment lid which can be easily broken during removal or subsequent replacement. Other than that, the grip seems to work fine.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works well but has it's drawbacks This unit seems to work well (you have to get the connections just right and mine didn't work until I took it off and re-secured it). It also comes with a wireless remote which I have not used. I bought it mainly to shoot video as I would not want to stop the video midway to change the batteries. In that regard it's a worthwhile investment as this unit can function on 2 batteries (or one) and you can swap one at a time without stopping the video and without taking the camera off the tripod. The reason for only 3 stars, is because when I wanted to remove the grip and carry a smaller camera (which is why i bought it in the first place), the battery hook which secures the battery inside the compartment did not hold the battery in place. Apparently it became used to be pushed to the side from the grip being on the camera. I manually pushed the hook over the battery and eventually (after trying to push the hook in place), it did hold the battery in place. Honestly you would probably have this issue with any grip, but I feel it's important to note this. I like the unit and despite this shortcoming, I will keep the unit, because hopefully I will always be able to get the hook to eventually get back in place, or have to keep the grip on the camera indefinitely.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fits the SL1 nicely I don't like the external cable that must be attached to use the vertical feature. That's why I only rated the product at 3 stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from excellent product Gives a professional look to camera. Very little added weight to camera. Only set back is you must turn off the camera, remove batteries, remove grip then remove SD card. The SD card and batteries are both in slot used for the battery.Vertical shutter and included IR remote control shutter release work fine. Removing battery grip to remove SD card is the only reason for 4 stars.
