Varavon BC-GSII Overview

The Varavon Birdycam II is a handheld motorized 3-axis gimbal stabilization system for cameras weighing up to 5.5 pounds. It allows you to capture smooth, fluid shots whether you're actively following the subject, or the subject is simply passing by you. The camera platform is adjustable to support a variety of small to mid-sized cameras, including DSLRs, mirrorless cameras like the Sony a7s or GH4, and the Blackmagic Cinema Camera or Production Camera 4K.

The steering handle moves along three axes (up/down, left/right, and sideways), and your camera hangs suspended on a gimbal in the center and smoothly follows your movements. Even without the motors running, the gimbal balances out relatively smoothly, but with the motors on, the stabilizer counteracts unwanted movements and shake to keep your camera stable. Additionally, there's also a thumb-control joystick on the steering handle that lets you pan and tilt the gimbal without moving the handle itself.

The motors are powered by up to two Varavon batteries, with one battery provided with the stabilizer. A stand is also included for setting the Birdycam down. All the components come to you in a compartmentalized case with soft foam interior and requiring hardly any assembly.

question

Is the JVC GY-HM170UA 4KCAM too large to work with the Birdycam II?
Asked by: Anonymous
The Birdycam II is really designed more towards DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras. The JVC GY-HM170UA will be too large for this gimbal. You'd want to look at something like the DJI Ronin to mount a larger camcorder like the HM170.

question

Will the Birdycam II work with the Canon c100 mark II?
Asked by: Anonymous
Do not buy the Birdy Cam. I sold mine and bought a DJI Ronin. Much much better setup.

question

Can a remote be added in the future to the Non RC model?
Asked by: Oreon M.
Yes, you can add a Remote Controller in the future. Varavon's Graupner MZ-12 HoTT 2.4GHz 6-Channel Radio Controller is available as a separate purchase. However you save around $200 if you purchase the Birdycam II bundle that includes the remote controller.

question

Can you see the LCD when A7R II is in the Birdycam rig?
Asked by: Jim W.
Not readily. I mounted an arm to the top and my Ninja to that. Makes it very easy to tilt and configure but I would not rely on the onboard monitor while using this gimal

question

Will the Birdycam 2 fit the Sony FS7? I know the FS7 body weights in at 4.4 lbs. I am just not sure if the footprint of the cameras would fit in the Birdycam?
Asked by: Ryan W.
I tend to agree with Robert B on this. I use it with a C100 and the weight and footprint are kind of maxing it out. It is much happier with the Nikon DLSR or Sony A7RII... Don't know that a Ronin would be much better as the FS5 has a really deep form factor. I think you'd need to pull the side handle at the very least, which would help with weight...

question

Would this fit a FS5 with 18-105F4? Should be fine right? I have an A7s. Need a gimbal now and looking to get a FS5 soon.
Asked by: Di Di L.
When considering camera for a gimbal, you not only consider the weight but the mass of the camera. This is necessary on two counts, fit and balance. So while the FS5 loaded with lens and handle is only 4.9 lbs, I would be of the opinion the longer, higher FS5 would be too large to fit in the cage and the balance would be too much a strain on the motors. We have not heard as of yet anyone using the FS5 on the Birdycam. The above may be the reasons why.
