Astell&Kern AK100 II overview

  • 1Description

The blue AK100II Portable High Definition Sound System from Astell & Kern is a pocket-sized audio system capable of studio Mastering Quality Sound (MQS) support and playback. MQS is a high definition digital music format operating at 24 bits and sample rates from 96 to 192 kHz, which translates to distortion-free sound without data loss. MQS sources are commonly saved as a lossless 24-bit WAV or FLAC files during record production at the time of the mastering source. The AK100II also supports 5.6 MHz DSD playback by converting/downsampling to 176 kHz PCM.

The AK100II has an integrated single-channel Cirrus Logic CS4398 DAC and balanced output to provide exceptional sonic quality and detail. It can also be used as an external DAC when connected to a Mac or PC via USB. The player features 64GB of internal flash memory and a microSD card slot that supports up to 128GB from a separately sold card. This allows you to store a maximum of 192GB of high definition lossless music.

The 3.3" AMOLED touchscreen provides smartphone-style control over playback, while the brushed aluminum body and volume wheel provide a smooth analog feel. The built-in battery recharges via USB and lasts for up to 12 hours of playback. The AK110II ships with a protective case and micro-USB cable.

    Astell&Kern AK100 II reviews

AK100II Portable High Definition Sound System (Blue) is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product After Apple stopped producing their Ipod Classic, I did some research and decided I wanted a top of the line MP3 player and found the Astell&Kern and it has not let me down. The only issue I have found is that there's no software to speed up the process of making a playlist within Windows. Other than that, the quality and sound is second to none. It has met and exceeded my expectations and I love its look too. Great added piece for the die-hard stereo consumer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great, so far Just received my unit. Loaded with files from JRiver MC20. Using Grado earphones with the unit. Sound with hi-res files is everything I had hoped for. Highest res files I have used are 192/24 FLAC files. They have played flawlessly, with clear, detailed highs and solid, well-articulated mids. I have not tried any DSD files, yet, as I don't own any. My only complaint, which I've seen echoed elsewhere, is slow load times. Almost two hours for 32.2 GB of data. This would be fixed, or at least greatly improved, if the unit were USB 3.0 compatible.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Excellent sound, questionable support I have now used my AK100ii for 3 weeks. The sound, with the Grado GR10 earphones or my 10p headphones is excellent. Very detailed, accurate sound stage, clear highs and full bass. My frustrations are entirely with the user interface. Load times are very long (2+ hrs to load 32GB). I intentionally loaded all of this music into the miniSD card. Unfortunately, this resulted in a 4-5 min period during which nothing could play while the player displayed a message that the SD card was being scanned. In addition, I discovered that I could not load DSD files from JRiver MC20. I will try the iRiver player, once it finishes scanning the folder to which I pointed it. JRiver MC20 did this task in about 5 min. I had to leave the iRiver player scanning overnite. No idea why it took so long. My final frustration is the complete lack of response from iRiver to questions submitted thru their website. One doesn't expect this in support of a $ device. My ranking would be 4 stars, if it was only on the playback quality. However, as I feel it's important to rate the entire AK experience, I cant award more than 3 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great player after some initial pains First of all, the sound of this player is exquisite. It is detailed, yet escapes a lot of the digital coolness. The amp section could use a bit more gain for headphones but I wouldn't call it underpowered. I've used Grado GR-10 earbuds, Grado GS-1000 headphones and Audeze LCD-2 phones. A little underpowered when used with the Audeze phones. I use OS X and the player has a bit of a windows bent to it. I had a hard time getting it to read from the SD card but there was a setting I switched and now it works. I'm sure with a little more fiddling, it will work better. Cannot mount the player as a drive so a file transfer program needs to be used with the mac. If I have one complaint, the USB is slow making filling the thing a time sink. The Android file transfer program isn't asynchronous either. Wish it was USB3 capable. Right now, I'm wirelessly streaming HD audio to it. Works great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Sound The included recordings received with the AK100 II were exquisite, but the sound I heard from the songs imported from my computer were nothing less than spectacular. I could not believe I was listening to the same songs. I highly recommend the Astell & Kern AK100 II.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ak100ii revisited So I guess my criticisms of the AK100ii are 1) slow boot time, 2) poor interface with OS X, 3) lengthy library rebuild, 4) dead slow moving music onto the thing, 5) the UI is buggy, but not horribly so, 6) documentation and support lacking. It might seem I am picking nits but this thing was $$or so and an iPod Nano is a LOT more polished. I am sure a Windows user would have a lot less hassle than I do with OS X and the AK but frankly, I only use it at work and really don't need the best sound quality there. I just do't want to be hassled by some fiddly piece of hardware. There is really no denying the sound quality of the AK100ii and it surely is attractive. The DAC/amp section is very good. It is a solid piece of gear, which I really appreciate, but I wouldn't buy another AK product. I also wouldn't tell others not to but I couldn't recommend it to a Mac user.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Excellent sound, non-existant support The AK100II has an excellent sound. Since I use OS X, loading songs requires the use of the Android file transfer program to put music on it. This is proving to be buggy and very slow. I also cannot see music loaded on the SD card. This issue will have to be ironed out or I'll wind up returning it. It is too bad because the build quality is top notch and the sound kicks an iPod's butt. I would have expected a mature product for the price. Or at least access to tech support.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AK100 II First off, it's a lovely Player. Just connecting it to my Mac and using it as my DAC elevated my music to a whole new level. Also pairing it up with my T5p makes it a treat to hear any kind of music genre.
