StarTech S3520BU33ER overview

  • 1Description

The black 2-Bay USB 3.0 RAID Enclosure with UASP from StarTech enables you to build a secure RAID array with two 3.5" SATA hard drives with the option to connect it to your computer through either an available USB 3.0 port, at speeds up to 5 Gb/s, or an eSATA port, at speeds up to 6 Gb/s.

The RAID enclosure supports SATA III (up to 6 Gb/s), SATA II (up to 3 Gb/s), and SATA I (up to 1.5 GB/s) transfer speeds, as well as USB 3.0 transfer speeds (up to 5 Gb/s) for fast data transfer and efficient performance from your SATA III drives. When connected through USB, the enclosure supports UASP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol), which offers a tested performance of up to 70% faster read speeds and 40% faster write speeds than a traditional USB 3.0 at peak performance when paired with a UASP-enabled host controller (not included). UASP is supported in Windows 8, Mac OSX (10.8 or above), and Linux. With support for JBOD (individual drives), spanning (combining drive capacities but no redundancy), RAID 0 (performance), and RAID 1 (data redundancy), the enclosure offers several options that enable you to customize your drive arrangement based on your storage requirements.

To help maximize both durability and reliability, the external RAID enclosure features aluminum construction with a built-in 80mm ball bearing fan that helps improve ventilation and maintain a better operating environment for your drives. The HDD enclosure offers a versatile solution for increasing the storage/backup capabilities of your computer, with support for large capacity hard drives (tested up to 4TB). It supports most operating systems, including Microsoft Windows (8/7/Vista/XP/Server 2008/Server 2003), Apple OSX (10.9/10.8/10.7/10.6), Linux, and Google Chrome OS to help ensure compatibility with your computer system.

The RAID enclosure operates using an included 100 to 240 VAC universal power adapter. Also included is a USB 3.0 cable, an eSATA cable, and a rubber foot set.

    StarTech S3520BU33ER reviews

2-Bay USB 3.0 RAID Enclosure with UASP is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid but simple Install is one screw and drop in drives. Plenty of rubber on drives and on feet to keep vibration very minimal, but fan and drive noise are still fairly loud. +1 on power supply not being an outlet brick. Unit does not sleep or power down. Also had drive kernal panic the Mac after switching modes (to mirrored), but not holding down the reset button. Getting USB extensions and putting in an ISO rack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid and simple I liked that it only took one screw to install both drives. reassuringly solid metal housing with a plastic front. Set it up for mirroring and it required reformatting the drives, though they had been set up to mirror previously in a LaCie box. Wakes up faster than my 5-year-old LaCie box. I'm using it with my Mac to store the Home folders. Easy set-up.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from cheap and junky Yes, the price seems affordable, but you get what you pay for applies here. My unit, after one year of light usage, has a broken fan, which causes the RAID to stop functioning, which causes Windows Explorer to crash, its just not good. I in NO WAY have any long-term confidence in this unit. I can honestly report that it has all the hallmarks of being Made in China: parts that break, cheap looking design and plastics. Use this device if you want, but please DO NOT trust anything mission critical to this, use for temporary or short term storage only, or you might be sorry. Chalk another Win for China for taking my money, and giving me high failure rate and engineered obsolescence in return. I will be avoiding Startech in the future, giving the other guys a chance.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Raid Mirroring in Linux The unit seems to function well enough, I'll know more after a few months of use. It was relatively easy to set up but fortunately I saw instructions online before I ever set up the drive. The provided instructions from StarTech is very poor.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A OK Drives went in with no trouble and set up for Raid 1. Still in the testing phase, but everything seems A OK. Could use better instructions on what the status lights are showing.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not compatable with Bluray players Unit works well with two 4TB drives installed, but ONLY when connected to a computer. Unit is not seen when connected to the USB2 port on either my Oppo model 103 Bluray player or my LG model BD-660 Bluray player. So, a complete waste of money for me.
