SLR Magic Cine 35mm T1.4 Mark II Overview

The SLR Magic Cine 35mm T1.4 Mark II Lens with Sony E-Mount supports cine-style shooting on a camera with a Sony E-Mount. It features a fast T1.4 to T16 aperture range with a clickless iris that allows smooth pulls, and geared focus and aperture rings.

The lens follows the industry standard focus rotation, so when working with an optional follow focus unit there is no need to make an adjustment to how you work or add a reversing gear. The lens front does not rotate as you focus the lens; this allows you to use optional accessories such as clip-on matte boxes, or the SLR Magic Anamotphot adapter. The mark II features stronger mechanical components than the mark I version of the lens, allowing you to use the optional SLR Magic Anamporphot adapter or achromatic diopters without requiring an optional lens support.

Coverage
The lens has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 52mm
The clickless iris allows you to smoothly adjust your exposure during the shot.
Built-in iris and focus gears follow industry standards, allowing you to work with optional follow focus units and lens gear motors.
Focus rotation of the lens follows the cinema standard, allowing you to swap between this and other optional lenses without having to change your workflow.

SLR Magic Cine 35mm T1.4 Mark II Reviews

This is not a Full-Frame lens

The glass is honestly good albeit for its chromatic abberations but it works for its price. I had to sell mine right away tho since this is an APS-C lens and I am now using a Sony FX3

I love all my slr magic lenses. To me, these lenses just make the most sense for a micro 4/3 shooter on a budget. They are sharper wide open than voigtlanders and vintage lenses. They don't quite have as much character as my vintage Minoltas and Nikons, but the trade off of having a usable focus throw, sharp focus even wide open and almost no focus breathing make them worth the trade off. And putting things in perspective, they have so much more of a filmic look and character than the Panasonic lenses, especially the overrated 2.8 zooms. I recently rented the zooms for a job touring the inside of a plant to have the flexibility of the focal lengths and autofocus. But the footage looked so clinical and videoish that I ended up using using my slr magics. On short films, the 35mm is nice to use as your close-up lens, complimenting the 25mm slr magic as a normal lens for medium shots. I do understand some people's gripes about quality control, though. My 35mm came with metal flakes and oil on them, even on the lens, which had to be carefully cleaned off. And the stiff focus rings do grind a little bit. Not enough to make me pay more for voigtlanders or Rokinon cine lenses, which are actually more expensive than slr magic now to get a decent set.

Pretty nice lens, but I returned it.

I had this lens for a few weeks and used it on a couple of gigs. It’s a nice lens. Good images. I returned it because I decided I didn’t want to invest too much on M43 glass. I went with a sigma 18-35 and an adapter because it feels like a better investment. I did keep the 25mm SLR magic. If I wanted to invest in mft glass I would get the more expensive 35mm hyperprime. I like the super wide apertures. The only real annoying thing is that the aperture on this lens is the front ring, while on the 25 it’s the back ring. I would always grab the wrong ring when using this lens. Might not be a big deal for others.

Included lens caps shed debris. Have a lens brush handy.

Hefty lens. Action is smooth. Metal black lens caps shed black debris as soon as you touch them. Have a way to clean the lens as soon as you unpack it. Replace them with plastic extras you may have as soon as possible. If the lens is what you want, then don't let the caps put you off. I suspect that shooting video with a Fuji X-E1, which is what I have this mounted on, isn't high art, but it certainly serves my amateur video needs. Some nice depth of field effects are possible.

question

Will this lens work with the A7s ii and properly cover its sensor?
Asked by: Joshua D.
The SLR Magic Cine 35mm T1.4 Mark II is an APS-C format lens thus it cannot cover the full frame of the Sony A7s II's sensor. Therefore 4K movies are not possible without vignetting. It can, however, be used on the camera in APS-C mode for stills and Super35mm HD.

We're afraid not. This lens only covers an APS-C or Super 35mm sized sensor. You can still use it on the A7 Series, but in a cropped sensor mode only.

question

Is this a 10mm T2.1 like the description or a 35mm T1.4 like the photos?
Asked by: Rob A.
This is a B&H web error and I have alerted the webteam so they can rectify it. If you do a search for the 10mm T2.1 HyperPrime, the first image you see is the one you would be getting.

question

I have been trolling for differences between Version 1 and Version 2 (shown here) of this lens. Anyone? Cheers.
Asked by: Omer
I can say that usually the difference between version 1, 2, 3 etc, etc with any manufacturer is some sort of improvement and 99 times out of a 100, it is the way you will want to go. My take away from the SLR website is that the mark II version has improved focusing and a more robust front section.
