SLR Magic Cine overview

  • 1Description

The SLR Magic Cine 17mm T1.6 Lens with MFT Mount for BMPCC supports Cine Style shooting on the BMPCC. Although it features an MFT mount, it will vignette if used on cameras with a Micro Four Thirds-sized sensor. It features a fast T1.6 to T11 aperture range with a clickless iris that allows smooth pulls, and geared focus and aperture rings.

The lens follows the industry standard focus rotation, so when working with an optional follow focus unit there is no need to make an adjustment to how you work or add a reversing gear. It has also been designed to support the weight of an optional Achromatic Diopter without a lens support. Please note, to avoid vignetting only use the combination on a BMPCC camera with 77mm filters.

The lens has a 35mm equivalent focal length of:
40mm on a Blackmagic Cinema Camera, although some vignetting may occur
50mm on a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera
35mm on a standard Micro Four Thirds Sensor, although some vignetting may occur
The clickless iris, allows you to smoothly adjust your exposure during the shot.
Built-in iris and focus gears follow industry standards, allowing you to work with optional follow focus units and lens gear motors.
Focus rotation of the lens follows the cinema standard, allowing you to swap between this and other optional lenses without having to change your workflow.

    SLR Magic Cine reviews

Cine 17mm T1.6 Lens with MFT Mount for BMPCC is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Quality Lens I've read a couple of reviews regarding the lack of good quality in these lenses. That hasn't been my case at all. Actually I really enjoy each of the lenses I own from SLR Magic (10mm, 12mm, 17mm & 25mm). They're made specially for cinema cameras like the Blackmagic 2.5K & the Pocket which I own. I've filmed a couple of videos and so far it's been a pleasure using them. The only issue that i've found is the softness when using them wide open (T1.6). Apart from that, I would easily recommend them anytime.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile lens, well worth the money. WORKS WITH GH5 I have had my eye on this lens since I first started getting into SLR magic lenses and finally pulled the trigger the other week and so far I'm happy with the addition! Some of my curiosity about this lens was with the fact that it is billed as being for the Black magic pocket cinema camera only (and its tiny sensor), but regularly shows up under micro four thirds lenses when searching by mount. So which is it? It's fine with any MFT mount cameras. I've been using it with my GH5, GH5sand GX85 with no issues. I've also seen a review of the lens on an Olympus PEN body, so it should be good to go on any MFT camera! The other draw was of course the wider field of view without getting "bug eyed" like the 12mm or 10mm options. I have an older 12mm t1.6 SLR magic that has a crazy wide POV but it becomes difficult to use on much of anything but landscapes and architecture. This 17mm is a pretty gentle mid ground that allows for wide or close shots without noticeable distortion (IMO). So how is the quality of the lens? It's nice enough, but compared to the 25mm and 50mm hyperprime SLR magic MFT lenses is is a bit rough. The focus and aperture rings aren't nearly as smooth or resistant to motion, making subtle adjustments nearly impossible without a follow focus setup. The back glass of the lens comes to a very small element which I presume is where the BMPCC designation comes from, but it works without noticeable vignetting on any MFT camera. Example "photos" are screen caps from 4K video shot on a GH5 in Cinelike D around a park. Image is pretty sharp above about f2.8, nice and soft below. Amazing focus distance (about 6 inches) on this lens allows for near macro shooting! I had loads of example photos but only get 2 to upload so I gave one very wide and one very close. Bottom line for me is if you're getting this lens for $300 or less it's a nice image and a good piece of kit in that price range. I probably could have skipped the 12mm in favor of this lens for 90% of my "wide" shooting, but I'll probably keep both. The 10mm t2.1 would be a more significant jump and more worthwhile buddy to this lens if you're looking for an ultrawide option. Hope my review helps people that are on the fence or confused about the lens!
