SLR Magic SLRAD-501333 overview

  • 1Description

This kit includes the SLR Magic anamorphic attachment and achromatic diopters useful for creating shots with wide cinematic vistas and getting that anamorphic effect. The Anamorphot 1.33x - 50 provides you with an image with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio when used on an optional compatible lens mounted on a camera with a 16:9 sensor. The trade-off in using an anamorphic attachment is often a loss in close focus capability. Although the anamorphic attachment does have a normal/near focus adjustment, the included Achromatic Diopters allow you to focus your anamorphic set-up closer, although you may lose the ability to focus to infinity when using the diopters.

The diopters mount on the threaded filter ring of the Anamorphot attachment and are designed to minimize distortion and chromatic aberrations that may occur if you use diopters not designed specifically for the Anamorphot 1.33x - 50.

  • Anamorphot 1.33X - 50 Anamorphic Lens Attachment

Creating a widescreen 2.35:1 image using a camera with a 16:9 (1.78:1) sensor requires you to either crop the image or use an anamorphic lens attachment such as the SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33X - 50 Anamorphic Lens Attachment. The SLR Magic adapter features a 1.33x anamorphic element that allows you to use the your cameras entire 16:9 sensor to get a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, as opposed to throwing away information by cropping the 16:9 sensor to achieve an image with a 2.35:1 ratio. Cropping an image causes a loss in resolution, but the Anamorphot 1.33x - 50 is actually squeezing more information onto your sensor. This does result in your recorded footage having the classic tall/thin squeezed image. However, this is easily expanded to a 2.35:1 aspect ratio in most NLE systems, and cameras with variable display adjustments allows you to stretch your image in the viewfinder.

The Anamorphot mounts onto your taking lens and features three locking screws that you tighten to secure the adapter once you have aligned it on your taking lens. Please note you can only use the Anamorphot on lenses with a non-rotating front, otherwise the anamorphic effect will rotate as you change focus. The Anamorphot's native mounting thread size is 62mm and will mount directly to lenses that feature 62mm filter threading. The included three step-down rings allow you to mount the attachment on optional lenses with a 49, 52, or 58mm front thread. You can use the adapter on lenses that feature a front filter thread larger than 62mm by using optional step-up rings, however optimum results are not guaranteed, and SLR magic recommends using the adapter on lenses with a front element that is physically smaller than 50mm in diameter. The Anamorphot features a Normal/Near adjustment setting. SLR Magic recommends setting the adapter to Normal, and only adjusting the setting to Near when shooting objects closer than 6.5 feet.

    Anamorphic Effect

The front mounted anamorphic attachment provides the classic anamorphic look and effect to your footage.
The Normal/Near adjustments ring allows you to fine-tune the focus of your lens for shooting subjects closer than 6.5 feet.
The Anamorphot can be fine tuned to exactly align the anamorphic effect horizontally.
The front of the Anamorphot features a 77mm filter thread.
Suggested Taking Lens Based on Sensor Size
    • 17-85mm focal length can be used for S16 sensor.
    • 20-85mm focal length can be used for MFT sensor.
    • 35-85mm focal length can be used for S35 and APS-C sensor.
    • 40-85mm focal length can be used for Full Frame sensor.

Note: These are recommendations only, and you should make your own judgement about what lens to use based on your observation and experience.
    Recommended Maximum Aperture Values
    • f/2.8 for 20 to 50mm focal lengths
    • f/4.0 for 55 to 85mm focal lengths
    • f/5.6 for 90 to 135mm focal lengths

Note: These are recommendations only, and you should make your own judgment about what f/stop to use based on your observation and experience.
  • Achromatic Diopter Set (+0.33, +1.33)

Using an Anamorphic Attachment will often limit your taking-lens' ability to focus close to the camera; however, the SLR Magic Achromatic Diopter Set is a pair of diopters with a 77mm diameter thread. The set features highly-corrected glass elements that allow you to close focus with your SLR Magic Anamorphot attachment, or other lenses with a 77mm thread.

When using these diopters with your SLR Magic Anamorphot the +0.33 diopter is effective for focusing between 5 and 10', while the +1.33 is effective for focusing closer than 3.5'.

Corrected optics minimize chromatic aberration in use.
    Coated optics for flare reduction.
Diopters are stackable, although SLR magic recommends only doing this with taking lenses longer than 35mm to avoid vignetting.
The diopters come in a small filter case with a magnetic clasp.

SLR Magic SLRAD-501333 reviews

Anamorphot-50 Attachment & Achromatic Diopter Kit (+0.33, +1.33) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what we needed this is a quality product. it's relatively light, and very sharp. let's talk about sharp. you need to educate yourself when it comes to focusing with anamorphics. they aren't plug-and-play. they aren't for run-and-gun. if you understand how to properly use anamorphic lenses, you'll be very pleased. it's such a good price for what it is. the closest alternative is the Letus. while the Letus allows you to use a wider range of lenses (front element larger than 50mm), it is very large and heavy. it also is more than twice the cost. get the anamorphot with diopter kit (for close focusing) and you will be very happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great cinematic tool. The images captured throught the lens are truly cinematic. Easy to mount, operate this solid built glass. You don't really have to worry about focusing difficulty, even if you're run&gun shooter. You'll get the knack in 10 min. Shooting closer object requires a bit more experience. You'll have to play around with diopters. SLR Magic Anamorphot turned my bmpcc to be ultimate cinematic machine. If you require me, I'll send you the link of my sample footages.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not so great On the plus side, it's small and unobtrusive. On the negative side, it's not very well made. It's very hard to turn the focus ring without it turning the entire anamorphic element and shifting the image. The step up rings that come with it also stick very tightly, and I was worried I was going to strip them when I tried to take it off. The glass isn't the best either and tends to soften the image. If you're looking for a (relatively) inexpensive anamorphic option for web based work this might be good. But for large screens or a theatrical film the image quality is way too soft.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't be a Digital Film maker without it. to get that Anamorphic look to your film there is really no other cost effective way about it. There is a learning curve, but if you apply your desire as a filmmaker you will get the look that no one thought was possible just a few years ago. You owe it to yourself to get this and get to the next level.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great lens! Having transferred from my Kowa Bell Howell 2x lens attachment to this on my 5D3, I have to say that this lens has made my life much easier! the design is very intentional and intuitive to those who have used older type anamorphic lenses for contemporary digital formats. This lens is perfect for anyone shooting on a 16:9 format, and is very easy to use. The flare is a bluish purple tint which has a new type of look so your images will look contemporary rather than the classic type look that other anamorphic lens attachment may produce. The lens is very light weight as well and the packaging is very nice. The diopters and the step rings come in a nice case and the quality is generally very nice! a good travel kit. Also, shooting this on a 40mm pancake lens is a very cool combo. wide like wes anderson type stuff. I recommend it! although if you're shooting on a 4/3 then obviously go for the 2x to achieve a more classic anamorphic look.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well made, super cool I do a lot of camerawork for local, low-budget films and I was torn about buying one of these for a long time. The complications involved do slow things down, but on the right project that can be more than worth it! Overall, the piece feels solid. And the images are beautiful! I've been using it combined with a GH4 in 4K as well as a Blackmagic Pocket in 1080p and both held their sharpness reasonably well. It does soften things, but not so much as to discourage me from using it. The set screws that keep the barrel from rotating are probably the weakest point of the design. The manual instructs to keep from over-tightening the screws, but sometimes the barrel would move just from my trying to shift the NEAR/NORMAL focus ring so I've been kind of paranoid about finding a balance between tightening and over-tightening. I hope to be able to find the sweet spot without breaking anything... Also, though the included step-up rings are solid, you'll still most certainly need some lens support to feel completely safe about it! This is definitely the type of purchase worth researching first. It won't fit everyone's style of shooting, but if you can work around the many limitations inherent to anamorphic shooting then it can be well worth it at the end of the day!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Totally Worth It I have been wanting to shoot anamorphic since forever but the lenses were just out of my cost range. This adaptor has been great. I have been using it with the Lumix GH3 and GH4 and the Panasonic 12-35 2.8 and 35-100 2.8 and it works awesome. The filter is easy to set and use, the Normal/Near Focus settings will get you through 75% of situations but the diopters really help in those close shots. It brought an amazing look to the footage and for the first time I was getting a cinematic look right out of camera as opposed to an overly video look. Easy to set up but I would highly recommend rails and a lens supporter as the filter is quite heavy and can put stress on variable lenses. All in all great product that helped me create the look I have been chasing for so long.
