    Pelican EL27 reviews

EL27 Elite Weekender Luggage with Enhanced Travel System (Gray and Black) is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally a suitcase the baggage handlers can't destroy! I have been traveling by air monthly for the last 18 years. Since my work requires suits and ties I've always used a rolling suitor that gets checked as baggage. Seems like the baggage handlers love to work over semi soft sided luggage, each trip there's a new battle scar or worse. I've been using Pelican cases to transport my camera gear and they just shrug off anything that comes there way. I considered converted a larger and heaver Pelican case in to a rolling suitor, but they start out much to heavy to carry much in the way of clothes. Pelican finally created what I've been looking for. I believe this is the last piece of luggage I will need to buy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the price If you are the occasional traveler, then this is not the case for you.... If, however, you travel quite a bit, often with valuable and/or fragile items, then this is worth ever penny. The case itself is what you would expect from Pelican - strong, well built, and durable. The accessories (Elite version) are pretty cool and make packing and unpacking easy. So, why this instead of a regular Pelican case? Weight! A regular Pelican case is around 30 pounds, giving you 20 pounds to work with before you're paying excess baggage fees. The Weekender Elite is about 17 pounds, allowing you to carry much more without the added weight. Highly recommend this product - just wish Pelican could knock the cost down a little bit.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great until it breaks I own all 3 sizes of Pelican luggage, but use the 27 the most. They're all strong and rugged and everything you'd expect a Pelican suitcase to be. They're heavier than other similar sized bags, but not too bad. They really are great suitcases... Until they break. Then they're a nightmare. The reason for the 2 star review is the lock, and Pelican's customer service. The locks on my 27 and 30 bags have always been more difficult to open than on my 22 one. I never gave it much thought until my most recent trip when I was unable to open my bag upon arriving at my hotel. I pushed so hard on the knob that I made my fingertips bleed. I ended up needing a pair of pliers to turn it. Even with them it was difficult, but at least I got it open. The same was true upon arriving back home. I contacted Pelican to have the lock on my 8 month old suitcase repaired or replaced. They said I would be responsible for shipping it to them myself, and would have to include a $ check to pay for the return shipping. If this was several years old, that would be fine. But $+ to have something repaired that's only 8 months old seemed wrong to me, so I responded to them saying so. It's worth noting it takes Pelican's Customer Service dept at least 48 hours to respond to anything. Eventually they responded saying they'd waive the shipping to send it back to me, but I'd still have to send it to them myself. Which I did for $32.15. 2 hours after the case was signed for at Pelican, and 3 days after my previous correspondence with them, they email me with a prepaid shipping label pretending to finally do the right thing.Bottom line, the suitcases are great until they break. The guaranteed for life selling point seems great, but it's quite clear Pelican's Customer Service dept is not interested in standing behind their products, or helping you when something does go wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Robust Luggage This thing is super-sturdy. Rigid walls protect things placed inside, the enhanced travel system is a nice addition as well. I would recommend it. The whole thing just feels very well designed and manufactured. It has 4 clasps and a combination lock (TSA type 2) and handles on all sides. Every feature (clasp, handle, lock) is recessed below the rigid exterior for protection. The hinges are metal and redundant. This case is just a beast. Pelican are clearly leveraging their extensive military case building experience for the prosumer of travelling customers. The only downside I have is the empty weight of around 20 lbs. This counts against your airline limit of 50 lbs (obviously), and it's not as light as an empty canvas bag... but this really isn't a big enough issue to remove a star for.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This one should last. Two soft sides destroyed this year; a TravelPro roller and an Eminent spinner. As a weekly traveler with 100,000+ miles per year, I hope this is my last suitcase. After two trips with it so far it's amazing the dings and scuffs already on the Pelican suitcase that you don't see on soft side bags. You almost have to buy the travel system or your suitcase is just an empty box with no storage compartments so far I only use the detachable lid organizer. The other items are not useful so far. My shoes don't fit the shoe sack. There is verbiage concerning the limited lifetime warranty offered to the original purchaser, but there is no warranty card or method I have found to register the product in my name. My main complaint, there is no where to insert a business card or an identification label.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Love Pelican cases I have several of the industrial Pelican cases for camera equipment, and firearms. They all meet my needs and are tough as nails. The 27 Elite Weekender is built lighter but is much stouter than anything else I've found on the luggage market. I fly for work and found it will take a beating better than anything else I've used for flying. I also like the travel system as it lets me organize the contents better. Now the reason for only three stars. The built in TSA lock is junk. When I received the case I set the combination and tested it several times to make sure it worked. My first trip I returned from Alaska, and someone locked the case. Hey no problem I know the combo; well my combo didn't open the lock. Took it back to the airport and asked a TSA supervisor to use the #2 key to open it. Went home and took the lock assembly out of the case. disassembled it, reset the combo and put it back together. Second trip same result on the return. Same solution to get it open. Thank God it didn't happen on the outbound leg! Repeated the disassemble, set reassemble steps as above. I see three solutions, 1. Send the case back to Pelican with a big piece of my mind. 2. Disable/dismantle the lock completely. 3. See if Pelican has come up with a better lock assemble to install. Why didn't Pelican just put two tabs on the case like they do with their industrial cases, then I could put quality locks on and call it good?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Have used it on 2 long haul trips, holding up well! Hinges and latches are to the same standard as the Pelican hard cases I am used to, the integrated lock and latch for security uses a 3 digit tumbler-style lock and the lock mechanism is sufficiently tucked away so as not to be prone to damage, as many are. Wheels are sturdy and the retractable handle creates zero extra profile once closed down. The enhanced travel system is great, most especially the lid-organiser as this is most commonly the most difficult space to utilise in a Pelican case, which is now taken care of! Great product!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Weekender is worth ever! I have travel twice with brand new weekender. First time code lock just fall apart in my hands after first fly, than it takes month of exchanging of emails with Pelican stuff and $ of post expenses and finally in 6 month I got it back Fixed, But next appearance on luggage belt was with broken handle. And now pelican service just ignoring my requests. This guys knows well how to make boxes, not suitcases, Its waist of time and money to buy Weekender, from my experience
