Profoto Air Remote overview

  • 1Description

Maximize the potential of your AirTTL-equipped flashes through the use of an Air Remote TTL-N from Profoto. This powerful remote provides you with an outstanding set of features, including support for wireless power control and TTL, including high-speed sync, with Nikon cameras. Operating on a 2.4 GHz frequency, the Air Remote can sync with flashes up to 1000' away with normal triggering and 330' with TTL. TTL is useful because it offers automated shooting and exposure and brings the advantage of high-speed sync, enabling the use of shutter speeds up to 1/8000 second. Also, the controller has 8 channels and 3 groups, ensuring minimal interference with other nearby systems and equipment. Each group can be controlled independently from one another, permitting ±2 EV adjustment of power ratios for TTL systems and nine stops of manual control. You have access to remotely turn on/off the modeling lights or heads, making it easier to adjust lights in your studio. Additionally, there is a mini-USB port for installing firmware updates and it runs on just two AAA batteries.

AirTTL flashes and packs, such as the B1X and Pro-10, fully support TTL communication from an Air Remote TTL-N and a compatible Nikon camera. This makes shooting incredibly simple as the camera and flashes automatically determine the best power settings for the scene in order to produce a properly exposed image.
In addition to TTL and manual controls, with AirTTL flashes and packs you can make use of both with hybrid operation where an initial exposure is captured with TTL and then the system is switched into manual where it retains the exposure settings.
By using TTL, users can enjoy almost automatic flash exposure in a range of conditions as well as the ability to access high-speed sync for using shutter speeds up to 1/8000 second. When using TTL, power ratios between groups can be adjusted from 2 EV.
A 2.4GHz radio system ensures exceptional reliability with ranges up to 1000' in standard sync modes and 330' with TTL/HSS.
Users can choose between eight different channels to help minimize interference with other nearby systems and control up to three groups of light on each channel.
A mini-USB port is available for installing firmware updates.

    Profoto Air Remote reviews

Air Remote TTL-N for Nikon is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 63.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Works OK when it's turned on I have 3 of these TTL-N Profoto triggers I use with D1's B1's and B2's. It works fine with all lights and even works in TTL mode with the B1's and B2's. The major complaint I have is that the unit turns off after 30 minutes of use. This happens no matter if your actively taking pictures or not. According to Profoto service, it's supposed to stay on for 30 minutes after the last trigger from your camera. All three of my triggers do the same thing. They shut off in the middle of a portrait shoot every 30 minutes after being turned on. The only way to keep the trigger on is to load the latest firmware Version B5 and then you have to remember to press the + energy button when you turn the unit on. This keeps the unit from automatically turning off after 30 minutes. This auto turn off happens with all of my cameras. D4, D4s, and D810 which are supposed to be fully supported and tested by Profoto. This looks to be a definite design flaw that I hope Profoto will eventually get fixed. Other than the power off design flaw they work fine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Yes! But..... This is an excellent trigger with a simple and intuitive interface. I own both the B2 and B1 and it works flawlessly. I've even dropped the unit two times onto hard concrete floors with no sign of damage. But my big gripe, which I find quite unacceptable at this price, is the lack of a focus assist beam. If you shoot in a studio or on location in broad daylight this is not an issue. Shooting an event/reception in a poorly lit environment increases lens focus hunting and dramatically nullifies the B2's ability to accurately and consistently measure TTL power output. I am now are the point of shooting with a manual lens, zone focused, when using the Air Remote and B2 as a speedlight replacement for most night events/receptions. Unless a focus assist IR interferes with RF transmission I see no good reason why a premium priced trigger should omit this feature. How difficult is this to do when far less expensive triggers from Yongnuo and the forthcoming Phottix Odin II have this feature. I would add that there should be a battery level indicator on the remote as well. It would be nice to know when your batteries need replacing before dying while on a job and trying to trouble shoot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great controller for Profoto Air equipment Profoto makes great gear and the Air Remote is no exception. The remote works great when using B1 TTL strobes. The benefit of being able to turn groups / model light on / off from the remote is great. As seen in many videos, shooting with TTL to get the initial exposure then switching to manual to fine turn or hold those settings is amazing. The cost of the remote is high IMHO but compared to buying a transmitter and receiver from PocketWizard, it really is a fair deal. I have not been able to get the remote to fire the strobes when mounted on top of the PocketWizard Mini TT1 via the hot shoe. Oddly, the remote will fire when I push the test button on the TT1 but not when pushing the shutter button. This is disappointing because I would like to be able to include my SB700 in my lighting via TTL when needed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Controller but Expensive This is a nice compact control package to enable management of Profoto B1s and use TTL metering. This remote sits atop the camera's hot shoe allowing both manual and automatic (TTL) control of Profoto B1 monolights. Control extends to both flash and modeling light functions with up to 8 different channels and 3 groups. Light ratios can be set in TTL mode (+ or - 2 stops) or fully controlled throughout the 9-stop range in manual The unit supports HSS as do the B1s. The unit is firmware upgradeable.Profoto gear is very well made and very durable. It is also very expensive. I would have given this Air Remote 5 stars but for the price. Therefore my rating was downgraded due to price alone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does everything it needs to do What more can I say about a wireless trigger? This thing does the job very well. My only knock on it, as others have stated, is the price. But I feel like this is a one-time purchase and won't need to revisit this for a long time. If you get some B1's, then I think this trigger is a must, as it is the only trigger for the lights that support TTL. If you don't want to use TTL, them you can use Pocket Wizards or other triggers, but if that's the case, then you don't need B1's. Stick to the cheaper Profoto lights (ie, d1's). Also awesome lights, and close to half the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have for Profoto OCF lights This is a must have for Profoto OCF lights. It said in the manual it wouldn't work with the Nikon D500 (and I saw that after I purchased it) but when I got it, it works flawlessly on all my cameras (including the D500). No setup is required other than making sure your channel on the light and transmitter is the same. The TTL works fantastic I can pretty much just set the light up pop this on my camera and start shooting with almost perfect exposures immediately. It also has a microUSB so the firmware can easily be updated when released by Profoto.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent PROS: - Easy to use - Excellent build quality - Works perfectly with Profoto B2 AirTTl CONS: - Doesn't work with 3rd party receivers like PocketWizard
    Date published: 2015-09-25
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great This is a great addition to the Profoto line. The TTL functionality works great, certainly as well as Nikon's own. It's important to note that the energy button only controls relative power levels when multiple lights are used. Adjusting the energy level with one light has no effect. One must use the camera's flash compensation to adjust the power output of one light. The build quality is good, not great. Overall I would say the unit is overpriced somewhat, but Profoto equipment is never cheap. Of note, units shipping from B&H as of early March still had original firmware. I had to upgrade my firmware to the one allowing high speed sync that was released by Profoto in December. I had no problems with this however. Overall, excellent product.
