Rokinon 12mm f/7.4 overview

  • 1Description

Rendering a unique perspective for creative applications, the Sony E mount 12mm f/7.4 RMC Fisheye Lens from Rokinon is a manual focus prime featuring an expansive 167° diagonal angle of view. Benefitting the fisheye perspective of the lens is a 7-layer Rokinon Multi-Coating (RMC), along with a built-in petal type lens hood, which help to minimize surface reflections and lens flare for greater image contrast and color fidelity in a broad array of lighting conditions. Further emphasizing the perspective-altering attributes of the lens is an 11.8" minimum focusing distance, which pairs with the manual focus design to help in accentuating foreground subject matter and emphasizing a unique sense of space.

This lens is dedicated to APS-C-sized Sony E mount mirrorless digital cameras, and provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 18mm. It features an all-glass four-element-in-four-group construction, and is housed within a durable aluminum alloy lens barrel with rubberized focusing ring.

Prime fisheye lens with a fixed f/7.4 aperture is designed for APS-C-sized Sony E mount mirrorless digital cameras, where it provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 18mm.
Expansive 167° diagonal angle of view helps to render unique perspectives and emphasize close-up subject matter.
Seven-layer RMC multi-coating reduces lens flare and ghosting for contrast-rich, color-neutral imagery.
Manual focusing design provides a minimum focusing distance of 11.8".
All-glass optical construction is housed within an aluminum alloy lens barrel featuring a built-in petal type lens hood.

    Rokinon 12mm f/7.4 reviews

12mm f/7.4 RMC Fisheye Lens for Sony E Mount is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not as New as you think If you like Wide angle shots this will really enjoy. First released by SonyRumors back in 2013 this lens mounts on Sony E Mount. Samyang/Rokinon/Dorr/Seiko are all different versions of this lens. Ive seen purple haze from this lens. I do not see Lightroom with a Lens Correction preset for any Samyang lenses. For the price you can buy it and if you dont like it sell it on Craigslist and get your money back

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Can't say I would buy it again. I wanted to like this lens, because it is wide, and inexpensive. The problem is that it is slow, and so it is difficult to focus. I actually have not found any point, though testing, where it is in sharp focus anywhere. It seems it may be better for closer subjects than far, but the process is so trial and error that you are definitely better spending your money elsewhere.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good for the Money. This lens is well worth the money. Sharper then I thought it would be. The focus ring is a little off but work OK. Will focus the lens but does not line up with markings. Have had a lot of fun using this lens. Using it for star images. Star images are pin point. Sharp. Not perfect but very high quality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A fun lens that opens up some creativity This is a fun lens for a specific type of creative photo. This is not an everyday walk around lens. It has a specific purpose and produces a unique type of photo. If you'd like to experiment with a fish eye lens, this a great inexpensive way to get started.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Focusing not calibrated The focusing ring on this lens in not calibrated, which will lead casual photographer to get soft focus pictures when lens focus set to the AF position. This problem happened with two different samples of this lens, and on two different Sony bodies, so that indicates poor quality control by the manufacturer. I complained to the manufacturer of this lens, but they disclaimed knowledge or responsibility for this defect, because it carries the importer's trademark, and not theirs. To be more specific, when the lens is set to the infinity, or AF, mark, the lens is actually focused FARTHER THAN infinity. When I focus on an object 50 feet away, the object is not in focus. To achieve proper focus, I have to set the focusing ring to between the 0.5 meter mark and the minimum focus distance mark. At this point, I am still not sure if even sharper focus could be attained if I could focus closer than the minimum focus distance (0.3 meters), because the subject still does not appear out of focus at the minimum focus distance. This also means it is impossible to achieve critical focus on close subjects. If you can stand having to set the lens focus to a mark which DOES NOT coincide with the actual subject distance, and not being sure if this lens is able to achieve optimum focus, then it may be tolerable. It is the least expensive way to achieve a fish-eye effect on a mirrorless camera.
