Celestron 71209 overview

  • 1Description

Harkening back to the days when sailing ships ruled the waves, Celestron's 25x30 Ambassador Telescoping Brass Spyglass has vintage nautical styling with modern glass and coatings to make it a functional optic in today's world. It boasts a powerful 25x magnification and a broad 127° apparent field of view to take in the wide rolling seas without the disorientation common in high-power scopes with narrow fields. Its shiny brass tube is wrapped in brown leather to complete the elegant look, and telescopes out easily from its pocket-sized collapsed length of just 5.3" to an impressive 13", with a weight of just 7.3 ounces. An ideal gift for the sailor in you or your life, the Ambassador comes in an attractive custom lined wood case.

25x30 Ambassador Telescoping Brass Spyglass is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Too high magnification for a hand-held scope. To use this 25-power telescope, you really need to rest one or both of your hands on something (side of a sturdy tree, roof of a car, top of a boulder). I would have preferred about 12-power, which would allow me to hand-hold it without needing support. The closest focusing is about 35 feet. Trying to look at something closer will be disappointing. To use the scope, you first pull it out to full extension, then twist the eyepiece to focus. The scope and wooden case are beautiful, although the case does not quite fully close. I can probably modify the case to fully close. Overall, a nice telescope, as long as you know its limitations.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Handsome, but not functional If you are looking for a decoration, prop or show piece, this is an excellent product. It's really a beautiful item and comes in a nice wooden box for storage (or display). If you are looking for a spyglass that actually works, don't bother. This thing is useless. The product description claims it has 25x magnification, but don't expect that to include the ability to focus the lens. I went to see this item in store and couldn't for the life of me get it to focus. Neither could the gentleman helping me. Eventually one of his associates (who'd just finished with another customer) noted our struggle and said they didn't work. It was only good for decoration. Total bummer. I was hoping to get this for someone who's as much a steampunk fan as she is a hiker, and this would have been a fun little thing to carry along on mountain hikes (it's really very small when closed, and is extremely light to carry). Guess I'll have to figure something else out.
