Rokinon 50mm T1.5 Cine DS Overview

The 50mm T1.5 AS UMC Cine DS Lens for Canon EF Mount from Rokinon is a fast manual focus prime lens. The 50mm has a minimum focus distance of 1.5'. Internal focusing minimizes the effects of lens breathing, which insures a more consistent angle-of-view when adjusting focus. The lens is composed of 9 elements in 6 groups, including one aspherical element and one hybrid aspherical element to reduce aberrations. In addition, a lens multi-coating helps to improve light transmission reducing flare and ghosting. The filter thread diameter is 77mm.

With this 50mm lens, Rokinon introduces the DS series of cinema lenses, unifying their cine lenses in more than just name. Each of the DS branded lenses will offer the same alignment of their geared focus and aperture rings so that follow focus and other rig accessories won't need re-adjustment when swapping lenses. Also, each DS lens is tested to be color matched with the other lenses in the series and provide the same color and contrast when shooting video. Lastly, the lenses are marked with focusing scales on each side of the barrel for easier adjustment from either side of the camera.

Standard length manual focus prime lens for EF mount cameras.
Functional as still photo lens but optimized for cinema and video shooting with geared aperture and focus rings, de-clicked aperture for smooth exposure transitions and laterally printed aperture and distance markings. The 50mm T1.5 is part of the DS series of cine lenses, sharing characteristics and features that unify the series and make it easier for users to swap out lenses when shooting video. Each DS lens provides aligned focus and aperture rings so that readjustment of the follow focus is not necessary when switching lenses. Also each lens has been tested to match color and contrast for a consistent look and less potential post-processing. Finally, all DS lenses print focus scales on each side of the lens barrel for ease of use from both sides of the camera.

The first of many Rokinons I will be buying this year. Having fun shooting test footage with it right now and am impressed with what I can pick up thus far. If you're getting into filming or rebuilding your equipment list after a tumultuous few years, this is a descent starter.

One of my favorite lenses!

This is my favorite 50mm lens so far. The Canon 50mm f/1.4 is beautiful, but I chose this lens to try out using T stops. I use this lens for close-up portraiture and for video all the time, and am looking forward to getting the Rokinon Cine lens series soon.

One of my main lenses!

I went into the store and was going to purchase a different Rokinon 50mm. It was specifically for micro four thirds cameras. But I also had my eye on this one. The difference was the price range, but I went with the more expensive choice based on it recommendation and quality, and don't regret it at all! I want to get the Rokinon Cine lens series soon.

Context has to be taken with these lenses.

is this a 5 star lens? well, depends on the context. If you have $100,000 to spend on a set of cinema primes, why are you even reading this review? If you have $2-3,000 for a set of lenses, then these are thee best set of cinema prime lenses you can buy, because... well, they're basically the only cinema prime lenses you can buy with $3,000 That being said, for that price they are everything they need to be, do everything they need to do and have everything they need to have. The 50mm in particular has made me very happy already. I bought the rokinon prime kit when it was first revealed, some 5+ years ago, back when they only made the 24, 35 & 85 mm. those lenses have served me so well over the years, however recently I've been doing far more narrative work for clients and the jump from 35-85 was too extreme so I decided to finally purchase the 50. We did 2 days shooting narrative this week in relatively difficult to light situations and I tell you this thing saved my life. As soon as I pointed the 50mm at our actor and walked in a neg fill the image came to life and I breathed a sigh of relief that my money spent was returning value earned with client pleasing imagery. The lenses are light, sturdy, light transmits through them rapidly.. listen these lenses work, they are fine lenses for your money, You will not regret them, at this price if you work on a movie that does get to rent you sweet Angenieux lenses, you won't be upset that these are sitting at home in the case, and if the movie you're on doesn't have Angenieux money, your 1st will have little trouble setting up a follow focus with these. Editors note, they do have an extremely narrow throw, and the initial run had the focal gears at random distances up and down the lens. They however have since rectified this and the gears are all at exact distances from the base of the lens. In Closing; do it, just buy the Rokinons, you're wallet will thank you.

question

What is the focal length equivalent for Super 35mm CMOS on Canon EOS C100 Mark II?
Asked by: Jerry D.
Super35 is, for all intents and purposes, has the same angle of view as APS-C. With both of these, there is a 1.6 difference in their angle of view as compared to Full Frame. So on the C100's Super35 sensor a 50mm will have about the same angle of view of an 80mm lens on a Full Frame sensor.

Can I use this with a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K or do I need an adapter ring of some sort?
Asked by: Ryan
This is an EF mount lens and the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K has an MFT mount. You would want the Rokinon 50mm T1.5 AS UMC Cine DS Lens for Micro Four Thirds instead, BH #RO5015M43. https://bhpho.to/2Zfkf2g

what is the Maximum Reproduction Ratio?
Asked by: Dana M.
That is a spec usually only found on Macro Lenses, which this lens is not. However we do offer the Rokinon 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens for Canon EF which has a 1:1 ratio, B&H # RO10028C.https://bhpho.to/2lVmiEr

is this mean that I do not need metabones to using this lens? since its already for MFT?
Asked by: Indra
Correct, this is an MFT mount. Connecting directly to a typical MFT base should get you close to a 100mm focal length range equivalent. If you were looking for this to be 50mm equivalent it would need some sort of metabones reducer, and maybe a different mount type lens to go with that to achieve it

question

will nikon D5300 meter with this lens?
Asked by: Syukri
With your D5300, you can use the light meter with this lens and all other manual lenses. Be in either Manual or Aperture mode. Press the shutter button halfway, adjust the lens aperture manually until the arrow is in the middle of the scale. Mind your ISO and shutter speed.

question

Comparing the specs of this lens and the Rokinon 50mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC Lens, is there much difference between the two other than their minimum focusing distance? I.e. What's the reason for this lens being close to $200 more expensive than its AS IF sibling? Cheers.
Asked by: Xuhearn
Samyang is a South Korean manufacturer that makes the Samyang, Rokinon, Bower and other lens lines. Generally, all the lenses can be counted on having very good quality at very affordable prices. The Rokinon DS (Dual Side focus markings) is the top of line of their small cine lenses. (This is not counting their Xeen line of cinema lenses.) Besides the dual side markings, the coatings on the lenses in the DS line are matched for ease in color grading. If you feel you need these features you can purchase them and possibly retain greater resale value. If not, you can save.
