Rokinon 50mm T1.5 Cine DS Overview

The 50mm T1.5 AS UMC Cine DS Lens for Sony E Mount from Rokinon is a fast manual focus prime lens. It is compatible with APS-C and full frame E-mount cameras, having a full frame focal length equivalent of 75mm with APS-C sensors. The 50mm has a minimum focus distance of 1.5'. Internal focusing minimizes the effects of lens breathing, which insures a more consistent angle-of-view when adjusting focus. The lens is composed of 9 elements in 6 groups, including one aspherical element and one hybrid aspherical element to reduce aberrations. In addition, a lens multi-coating helps to improve light transmission reducing flare and ghosting. The filter thread diameter is 77mm.

With this 50mm lens, Rokinon introduces the DS series of cinema lenses, unifying their cine lenses in more than just name. Each of the DS branded lenses will offer the same alignment of their geared focus and aperture rings so that follow focus and other rig accessories won't need re-adjustment when swapping lenses. Also, each DS lens is tested to be color matched with the other lenses in the series and provide the same color and contrast when shooting video. Lastly, the lenses are marked with focusing scales on each side of the barrel for easier adjustment from either side of the camera.

Compatible with both full frame and APS-C format E-mount cameras, this 50mm manual focus prime lens provides the 35mm focal length equivalent of 75mm on Sony E mount APS-C format cameras.
Functional as still photo lens but optimized for cinema and video shooting with geared aperture and focus rings, de-clicked aperture for smooth exposure transitions and laterally printed aperture and distance markings. The 50mm T1.5 is part of the DS series of cine lenses, sharing characteristics and features that unify the series and make it easier for users to swap out lenses when shooting video. Each DS lens provides aligned focus and aperture rings so that readjustment of the follow focus is not necessary when switching lenses. Also each lens has been tested to match color and contrast for a consistent look and less potential post-processing. Finally, all DS lenses print focus scales on each side of the lens barrel for ease of use from both sides of the camera.

Rokinon 50mm T1.5 Cine DS Reviews

Delivers crips image quality

For what this lens does at this price point, it is easy to get your money's worth with this lens without sacrificing quality. I'm still getting used to a MFT setup, so a 50 mm lens provides more of a tighter shot than I'm used to with the camera's cropping. That adjustment is the main reason I didn't rate the lens higher for right now, but the lens is easy to use with the manual iris and focus, for someone like me who wants to be in control of my shots, it works great. I've been using this lens for both video and photos, and I'm pleased with how both are turning out.

The first of many Rokinons I will be buying this year. Having fun shooting test footage with it right now and am impressed with what I can pick up thus far. If you're getting into filming or rebuilding your equipment list after a tumultuous few years, this is a descent starter.

This is my favorite 50mm lens so far. The Canon 50mm f/1.4 is beautiful, but I chose this lens to try out using T stops. I use this lens for close-up portraiture and for video all the time, and am looking forward to getting the Rokinon Cine lens series soon.

We purchased this to go with our B camera setup, we are using it on a GH5 and it is a solid choice! Having to manually focus stretches our volunteers, the bokeh is very nice with the low aperture. This is great for our low light interviews, but overall very very happy!

Good choice for my uses

I've been using a 35mm for stop motion work but needed a longer focal length to get the camera out of the way, and the 50mm does just that. Manual control over focus and aperture are a must in my work and these lenses provide that. However, as with the 35, focus breathing can be very apparent on long focus pulls, but can be worked around.

question

Comparing the specs of this lens and the Rokinon 50mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC Lens, is there much difference between the two other than their minimum focusing distance? I.e. What's the reason for this lens being close to $200 more expensive than its AS IF sibling? Cheers.
Asked by: Xuhearn
I believe one difference is the housing - the Cine DS lenses all have the gearing for the focus and aperture rings in the same place relative to the lens mount, so that you don't have to reset your follow focus when you change lenses. There may be other differences in coatings, etc.

is this mean that I do not need metabones to using this lens? since its already for MFT?
Asked by: Indra
Correct, this is an MFT mount. Connecting directly to a typical MFT base should get you close to a 100mm focal length range equivalent. If you were looking for this to be 50mm equivalent it would need some sort of metabones reducer, and maybe a different mount type lens to go with that to achieve it

Asked by: Syukri
With your D5300, you can use the light meter with this lens and all other manual lenses. Be in either Manual or Aperture mode. Press the shutter button halfway, adjust the lens aperture manually until the arrow is in the middle of the scale. Mind your ISO and shutter speed.

question

What is the focal length equivalent for Super 35mm CMOS on Canon EOS C100 Mark II?
Asked by: Jerry D.
Super35 is, for all intents and purposes, has the same angle of view as APS-C. With both of these, there is a 1.6 difference in their angle of view as compared to Full Frame. So on the C100's Super35 sensor a 50mm will have about the same angle of view of an 80mm lens on a Full Frame sensor.

This is an EF mount lens and the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K has an MFT mount. You would want the Rokinon 50mm T1.5 AS UMC Cine DS Lens for Micro Four Thirds instead, BH #RO5015M43. https://bhpho.to/2Zfkf2g

How will this work with a blackmagic pocket cinema 4K?
Asked by: Brad
The Rokinon 50mm T1.5 AS UMC Cine DS Lens for Micro Four Thirds (B&H# RO5015M43) may be used with a Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (B&H# BL4KPKCAM): https://bhpho.to/2Hjgn8q The resultant focal length will be that of a mild telephoto lens. That's typically considered ideal for headshots and the like. The effect is to slightly flatten an image, and the result is generally considered to beautify people.
