Samyang 50mm T1.5 VDSLR Overview

The 50mm T1.5 VDSLR AS UMC Lens for Nikon F Mount from Samyang is a fast, manual focus, prime lens. It provides a maximum aperture of T1.5 for effective low light capture and shallow depth of field control and an 8 blade iris for attractive bokeh. Optimized for cinema and video applications, the focus and aperture control rings are outfitted with industry standard gearing, which provides an interface for working with a traditional follow focus. The aperture control ring has also been de-clicked, which enables smooth iris pulls. In addition, bright aperture and distance markings are printed on the lens barrel facing laterally to facilitate easier control by a focus puller.

The 50mm has a minimum focus distance of 1.5'. Internal focusing minimizes the effects of lens breathing, which insures a more consistent angle-of-view when adjusting focus. The lens is composed of 9 elements in 6 groups, including one aspherical element and one hybrid aspherical element to reduce aberrations. In addition, a lens multi-coating helps to improve light transmission reducing flare and ghosting. The filter thread diameter is 77mm.

The VDSLR line of cinema lenses unifies Samyang's cine lenses into a cohesive series. Each of the VDSLR lenses will offer the same alignment of their geared focus and aperture rings so that follow focus and other rig accessories won't need re-adjustment when swapping lenses. Also, each lens is tested to be color matched with the other lenses in the series and provide the same color and contrast when shooting video. Lastly, the lenses are marked with focusing scales on each side of the barrel for easier adjustment from both sides of the camera.

Standard length manual focus prime lens for FX format F mount cameras. Will also fit DX format cameras.
Functional as still photo lens but optimized for cinema and video shooting with geared aperture and focus rings, de-clicked aperture for smooth exposure transitions, and side-facing aperture and distance markings. The 50mm T1.5 is part of the VDSLR series of cine lenses, sharing characteristics and features that unify the series and make it easier for users to swap out lenses when shooting video. Each VDSLR lens provides aligned focus and aperture rings so that readjustment of the follow focus is not necessary when switching lenses. Also each lens has been tested to match color and contrast for a consistent look and less potential post-processing. Finally, all lenses from this series print focus scales on both sides of the lens barrel for ease of use from each side of the camera.

I have a Nikon D7200 which has autofocus on the camera. When shooting video, I use the autofocus to focus before the shot and then turn it off to video. Will the camera's autofocus work with this lense?

question

What's the difference between this one and Rokinon 50? Because the price is 150 off
Asked by: Xin W.
Both this Samyang lens and the Rokinon 50mm T1.5 (B&H # RO5015TC) are made by Samyang Optics in Korea and are both the same exact lens. Rokinon is a private distributor of Samyang here in the US Market. Going with the lesser priced Samyang lens is a great choice.

question

is it compatible with 70d?
Asked by: Aaron
The Samyang 50mm T1.5 VDSLR AS UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount is perfectly compatible with the 70D. Be aware this gives on a APS-C sensor camera a slightly telephoto perspective along with being manual aperture and focus only.

question

Same quality as Rokinon DS cine? If these Samyang VDSLR II lenses are identical to the Rokion DC cine lenses, it would be great if there were lens kits and more models, like the Rokinon DS line.
Asked by: David
The Rokinon line is the highest level of quality of image, finish and features that this lens manufacturer makes. I would imagine in a test, there would be a slight edge with the Rokinons for better contrast and flare control over the Samyangs. And the feature that would be essential on productions with an focus puller is the Dual Side of the Rokinon DS line. However, if you are a single shooter, you could save your money for other stuff.

question

How does this compare to the 50mm f 1.4 lens (SY50M-E) besides the unclicked aperture?
Asked by: Dave
If you are doing video and particularly if you have a focus puller, you want this lens. Much needed features of a video lens besides the de-clicked aperture is the geared rings for a mechanical interface with manual or motorized controls plus horizontal focus and aperture scales for easy reading by the camera assistant. The 50mm f 1.4 lens (SY50M-E) is a still photo lens thus does not need these features.

question

Will this lens fit and work with my Nikon D5200 ?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes it will. It is a full crame lens. It will work as 50mm on fx bodies and as 75mm on dx bodies such as d5200. Note that the version t1.5 is a cinematography lens. If you need it for photography you should get f1.2 version.

question

What is the weather-proofing on this lens? Can this be used in rainy conditions?
Asked by: Anonymous
It is nowhere as well weather proofed as the Canon L lenses for example. It is very well built, but I would avoid getting it wet if possible. At least, I wouldn't be game to get mine wet if I can avoid it.A few drops shouldn't be a problem though.
