    WD WDBWLG0040HBK-NESN reviews

4TB Elements Desktop USB 3.1 Gen 1 External Hard Drive is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 293.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great if not for Windows This is my fourth or maybe fifth Western Digital external harddrive, and I always recommend them to anyone who needs extra storage. They are easy to install, relatively cheap and reliable. The only issue with them is more an issue with Windows than with the external drive themself. For backing up Windows 7 computers, drives larger than (2TB?) have to be reformated to use Windows backup or you need to purchase a special program. Its not hard to do, but if you bought the drive to do a backup, it can be frustrating as the drives don't warn of this issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Acceptable performance at a good price I ordered a couple of these disks to consolidate data from older drives, and have only had them for about a week so cannot vouch for their longevity. They are quiet (there's no fan), but also don't give off noticeable heat even while running for hours transferring terabytes of data. There's a small white LED that blinks during disk activity but it's unobtrusive, and the power switch on the back is a welcome addition. I'm getting 129MB/s write and 157 MB/s read speeds over USB3, and system profiling reveals it to be a WDC WD40EZRX Green drive inside (as of 2/2015). The disk has met my expectations for my uses. We will see how it holds up over time.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from USB 3.0 functionality failed after a few months I bought this drive for use in a research project where I am transferring a high number (hundreds) of very large (up to 1GB) data files between various systems and processing them. The fact that the drive has a USB 3.0 interface was attractive for the added speed, and at the time I bought it (June, 2015), the drive was about the same price as buying an OEM drive of the same capacity (4GB). For the first few months, the drive worked great. Transfer speeds were what one would expect from USB 3.0, and the drive was portable and reliable. After a few months (as of October), the drive stopped being recognised by any system (multiple computers, various OSes) when plugged into a USB 3.0 port. It was still recognised when plugged into a USB 2.0 port, and in these cases it worked fine. My laptop, as it turns out, has only USB 3.0 ports, though its port replicator has only USB 2.0 ports. But the port replicator is big and bulky, so in order to use the drive away from home with my laptop, I got a cheap USB 2.0 hub. This solution works fine, albeit a bit slow, but I get random disconnects from the drive when I use it through the hub. These disconnects are probably the fault of the cheap hub, since the connection has been pretty stable through the port replicator. In general I'm reasonably satisfied with the product so far, but when USB 3.0 functionality only works for a few months, and then fails to the point that the device is unusable on USB 3.0 ports, I can't give it a satisfactory rating.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Loud & Slow Bought this as my 3rd WD external drive. The first two were the older models that laid flat and did not have the air vents in the case. This one is very loud in comparison to those - the fan is always blowing and I can hear the disk spinning every time I access it. My older drives are completely silent. It functions just fine - plenty of storage at a great price and no trouble accessing the files.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heat Kills Heat is a major factor in hard drive longevity. Both WD and Seagate offer an assortment of USB hard drives in passively ventilated plastic boxes that do a poor job of keeping the drives cool. The big win for WD is that their plastic box is much better ventilated. There is a 1/4 in. gap between the top of the drive and the lid of the case and its vent holes are relatively large and numerous compared to Seagate's case which has very little space on either side of the drive. Nevertheless, all these plastic boxed drives run substantially hotter than when installed in actively ventilated enclosures or well designed thermally conductive ones like the superb but expensive G-Technology G-DRIVE boxes. I like to sit these WD drives on top of an AC Infinity MULTIFAN S3, Quiet 120mm USB Fan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great hard drive This 4 TB hard drive is fantastic for my applications. I edit video and the transfer speed of this device is amazing when I transfer the video files to this drive. The USB 3.0 speed is great and the amount of space is perfect. I would recommend this drive for anyone who is into video editing or high res media. All of my files are in 1080p soon to be in ultra HD and fitting all my files on this device is a breeze. If you want to shut it off using the power button on the back, just make sure you unplug the device from the computer. if it's plugged in the computer it will not turn off unles your computer is off (this isn't a con but something worth mentioning).Go get one ASAP.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does the Job! I have this drive plugged into my Macbook Pro every day. I have it partitioned so part of it is used for a Time Machine back-up and the rest is for storage for art, photos and videos. So far it's doing the job I need it to do, and it's small enough that it doesn't intrude too much on my desk space which is at a premium. I had been concerned it might be larger based upon the photo on the site, but it is smaller than I was expecting which is excellent. For Mac users, you will need to reformat the drive using disk utility, but it is easy and quick and you will be ready to go in under a minute.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Nice External 4TB Drive & A Good Value I'm no stranger to WD products having used them for over 20 years, primarily as hard-drives in building & repairing computers. I have a 2TB WD 'Mybook Live' NAS in service running for over 5 years without problems. It lives in a garage closet at temperatures from 50 - 100 degrees. So, when I needed a USB drive to backup my current computer periodically I again chose WD. Surprisingly, it offered the 'best bang (4TB) for the buck ($)' too. This 4TB Elements USB drive has been in service for 3 weeks now, quietly backing up my computer 3 times a week. Too early to tell it's future reliability or longevity...but I'm betting on my past experience with WD as a quality product.
