Metz AF-1 overview

  • 1Description

The mecablitz 52 AF-1 digital Flash from Metz is a shoe mount flash, with an illuminated rear touchscreen, designed to be compatible with Sony cameras featuring ADI / P-TTL. This flash also has a high guide number of 170' at ISO 100 and 105mm as well as a built-in USB port that allows for future firmware updates via the internet. A high quality metal base allows quick and easy attachment to the camera. This flash has the Sony Multi Interface Shoe and requires the optional ADP-AMA adapter for use on cameras with the older Sony/Minolta Auto-Lock Accessory Shoe.

The 52 AF-1 is designed to fully support a Sony camera's ADI / P-TTL system. It can be operated as a TTL slave unit that can be controlled by the camera's own built-in commander mode or as a master itself.

The flash also features an auto zoom head from 24-105mm that can be set to match the camera's sensor, a full bounce and swivel head (with a fully swiveling reflector system which also contains a flip-out reflector card and a diffuser), a built-in wide angle diffuser for 12mm coverage, and in addition, full manual control from 1/1 to 1/128 power in 1/3 steps.

Fully compatible with Sony cameras and updatable via USB port
High-speed flash synchronization allows flash to be used with any shutter speed
Operate the 52 AF-1 via its illuminated graphic display by directly touching the display indicators. For portrait shots, the display rotates the touchscreen display by 90°
Wireless full TTL triggering via a camera or flash with commander/master mode
Autozooming head can cover from 24 to 105mm, and 12mm when used with the included wide-angle diffuser

    Metz AF-1 reviews

mecablitz 52 AF-1 digital Flash for Sony Cameras is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works with a6000 Works directly with the Sony A6000 TTL, HSS, manual, remote slave, etc. Works in Servo (remote manual flash triggered by another flash) mode as well. Touch panel is easy to navigate, but seems slower than using other systems once you learn them. Hot shoe is PLASTIC not metal- thus the 4 star rating. Also, there is no external trigger interface (pc or 1/8), a sad omission as the special Sony shoe may preclude the use of the flash on hot shoe type radio triggers. Seems to be a well built flash, but due to the limitations listed, I'll wait for a different brand to come out with a Sony compatible version before I expand my TTL flash set.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great! Had a lot of trouble finding this in the Sony Multi Interface, but after contacting B&H via twitter they sent me a link so I could order the correct version for my A7. Really impressed with their response time and customer service so far! On to the flash, I'm a casual photographer so I'm not going to be able to give a real technical review, but I've had this flash for about 2-3 weeks now and I can tell you it's well built, performs as expected and has not overheated on me once so far. I really like the touchscreen controls and the menus/settings are easy to navigate/change. The only other flash I've used for comparison is a Canon 430EX II on my old Canon setup and I would say this flash performs just as well or better.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good, but what I expected I bought this flash on Metz reputation for my Sony A7II for my wedding work. It is well built, it has a nice touch screen, very intuitive. But the pattern of light is very narrow making the fall off of light too sudden. It feels like a cheap on-camera buil-in flash. I am returning it and getting either the Sony or a Phottix.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the brand version Works perfectly with the A7rii. TTL is on the money and wide angle diffuser does indeed cover a 24mm. the unit costs considerably less than the comparable Sony model and as far as I can tell does more.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Flawed design. Good luck getting it serviced from Manfrotto One of the pins on the foot of the flash got bent on my flash. Just one. Flash is otherwise fully functional. I called Manfrotto to ask for repair costs and guess what, to replace the foot, they need to replace the ENTIRE casing and the cost for doing this is $200. Metz/Manfrotto, how can you design a product which requires such major changes even for small on-surface repairs? This is plain stupid. I paid some $220 after mail-in rebate to buy the lens brand new, and it costs $200 to repair one bent pin on the foot of the flash? The Multi-Interface shoe pins are delicate and it isn't too hard to bent one of those. It should not cost nearly as much to repair one bent pin as a brand new product itself.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far, so good... I got this flash as a much less expensive alternative to a Sony flash to work with my Sony SLT-58. I was apprehensive, as the Metz site had confusing info about an adapter shoe and/or alternate software required for my camera. An inquiry to B&H resulted in assurance that it would work, with full capabilities without additional hardware. It does work, and wirelessly, as advertised! Although I'm new at digital flash photography, I'm now more confident about moving ahead with both on and off-camera lighting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great flash, great value I use a flash for most of my shots. For outdoors, I use it to fill in shadows. Indoors, I use a flash for better illumination of my subject(s). This flash is quite powerful for its size, fits right into the multi-interface shoe on my Sony mirrorless camera, is very reasonably priced, and has a very useful touch-screen control panel.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Almost there... Very powerful and reliable unit with a consistent quality of light. Recycle time is also good. The only problem, and it's quite a major, is that you can see the rail system for the zoom in the beam of light. Use the auto-zoom thingy and the issue disappear. For strobist work use a different unit or put modifier on the flash.
