The silver Fujifilm X30 Digital Camera is an update to the X20, adding a high-resolution electronic viewfinder, a larger 3" 920k-dot tilting rear LCD screen, a second control ring to adjust aperture and shutter speed settings, and a Classic Chrome film simulation mode. It features a 12 megapixel 2/3" X-Trans CMOS II sensor and an EXR Processor II to provide high quality imagery at up to 12 fps, and a sensitivity range to ISO 12800. This sensor uses a randomized pixel array, removing the need for an optical low-pass filter, thereby allowing the camera to produce sharp and clear imagery.

The main improvement in this camera over the X20 is the a 0.65x-magnification 2.36m-dot OLED Real Time EVF, with adaptive brightness and orientation settings, and only a 0.005 second lag time. For menu navigation and image review, a 3" 920k-dot LCD screen is located on the rear of the camera. The screen tilts to aid in low-angle shooting.

The Intelligent Hybrid AF system uses both contrast- and phase-detection methods to acquire focus as fast as 0.06 sec. The built-in lens is a 28-112mm (35mm equivalent) f/2.0-2.8 lens that integrates three aspheric and two extra-low dispersion glass elements to help reduce aberrations and improve image sharpness and quality.

Full HD movie recording is supported up to 1920 x 1080p at 60fps with a 36Mbps bit-rate for clear, fluid-looking videos. Zoom and exposure can be manually controlled during recording, and stereo audio can be recorded using an optional external microphone.

The X30's film simulation takes advantage of Fuji's long history of film production, allowing you to choose between eleven different Fuji films, as well as the Classic Chrome simulation that provides muted tones and deep color reproduction.

Real-Time Electronic Viewfinder

With a large magnification of 0.65x and a display lag time of just 0.005, the X30's EVF offers a clear, high-definition Live View with a new 2.36M-dot organic EL viewfinder and dedicated lens that improves visibility by automatically controlling the viewfinder's brightness according to the ambient light levels. The Live View display can also be set to reflect shooting conditions, or offer a natural view close to what is seen with the naked eye, while the viewfinder's eye sensor automatically switches the visible information when the camera is positioned vertically or horizontally.

12MP 2/3" X-Trans CMOS II Sensor

A large 2/3" CMOS image sensor is integrated into the X30 to provide high image quality and detail. Using Fujifilm's unique X-Trans bespoke pixel array, the sensor is designed with a randomized pixel pattern to eliminate the need of an optical low-pass filter for reducing moiré and aliasing. By removing this filter from the design, higher image sharpness is possible. This image sensor also utilizes backside illumination technology to help with the integration of phase-detection pixels into the sensor for improved autofocus performance without affecting image quality. The X-Trans sensor also pairs well with the EXR Processor II to provide highly effective noise reduction and a clean signal-to-noise ratio. This enables smoother-looking imagery that becomes especially apparent when photographing in low-light situations.

EXR Processor II

Aside from benefitting low-light performance, the EXR Processor II also provides quick performance throughout the entire camera system. The camera start-up time is about 0.5 second, shutter lag is about 0.01 second, and the shooting interval time is about 0.5 second. Additionally, this processing power provides enough speed to capture up to 12fps for 11 consecutive frames.

Fujinon 28-112mm f/2.0-2.8 Lens

The built-in 4x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-112mm with a fast maximum aperture of f/2.0-2.8. The inclusion of aspheric and extra-low dispersion elements helps to reduce the appearance of aberrations throughout the zoom range while also significantly contributing to overall image sharpness. Lens elements are treated with a multi-layer HT-EBC (High Transmittance Electron Beam Coating) to minimize lens flare and ghosting while shooting for greater light transmittance and contrast within imagery. The metal lens barrel is used to manually control your zoom magnification as well as control the on/off power setting to the camera. This intuitive control method gives you the ability to quickly turn on your camera to record imagery while holding the camera at an eye-level position. Benefitting the lens and especially low-light shooting, a lens-shift type optical image stabilization (OIS) system is integrated into the design to counter the effects of camera shake up to four stops. This OIS system also enhances image sharpness when working as closely as 0.4" / 1cm in Super Macro mode.

Intelligent Hybrid AF

Intelligent Hybrid AF is a quick, responsive autofocus system that employs both contrast- and phase-detection methods to acquire focus quickly in a wide variety of shooting situations. Clear focus can be attained in as little as 0.06 second to aid in catching fast-paced movement more easily.

An efficient graphical user interface promotes greater intuitiveness for menu navigation and monitoring. The Q Button gives a one-touch solution to modifying commonly used camera settings quickly and easily. Menu and setting navigation is done on the rear 3" 920k-dot LCD that also provides high definition playback of still images and video.

Full HD Movie Capabilities

Full HD movie recording is possible with multiple frame rates and formats up to 1920 x 1080p at 60fps to produce smoothly-depicted movement. A high bit-rate of 36Mbps enables greater clarity when shooting video.

Film Simulation Mode

Pulling from Fujifilm's line of transparency films, the X30 provides a wide selection of effects with the Film Simulation Mode. PROVIA offers natural-looking tones for everyday shooting, VELVIA produces a more dramatic and rich tonality with deeper color saturation, and ASTIA gives less contrast for a softer depiction of skin tones. Classic Chrome delivers muted tones and deep color reproduction. Mimicking their negative films, PRO Neg. Std. gives smooth image tones that are suitable for accurate color renditions, while PRO Neg. Hi produces a more dramatic feel with the ability to draw color out of a variety of lighting conditions. In addition to the colorful benefits of these Film Simulation modes, there are also monochrome modes that simulate the look of traditional yellow, green, and red black and white contrast filters. A sepia mode is also available for producing a nostalgic look.

RAW Shooting

An in-camera RAW converter lets you record your images in RAW and process them prior to computer-based editing procedures. FUJIFILM X30 Reviews

Two years later I would buy the X30 Again.

I bought the an X30 two years ago for an Italy trip and have now taken a few thousand frames with it with great results. I had owned several high quality SLR's and was tired of their bulk. At the time the X-30 and the Sony A6000 were the only compacts around $600 with OLE EVF's. I choose the X-30 because it was considerably smaller than the A-6000. A month ago, my sister called me for a recomendation on a camera to buy and I recomended she buy a Camera like the Fugi X-30, assuming that two years later there would have been a bunch of premiere compact cameras come on the market in the price range and below featuring OLE EVF's. My sister ended up buying an X-30 (paying $100 more than B & H's price) which prompted me to see if she could have done better. After looking at what's out there', for my money the X-30 still is the one to beat at its size price point.Great camera, although it is so loaded with features and and adjustable parameters, I occasionally have to revisit the manual if I don't use it for a couple on months. Key pluses: amazing EVF and tiltableLEDack screen, wide range zoom, with 2.0. to 2.8 F lens. Over 400 shots on a battery charge, plus the Fugi film emulations are very useful, Really you have about every feature you get with a mid priced SLR, with out all the bulk. Camera has a metal body and just reeks of quality in every detail. Perfect travel, street photography or everyday camera, with out the creative constrictions of a Point and Shoot. You will like it.

    Great camera until

As a retired pro shooter in editorial and portrait photography, I looked forward to using this camera. I bought it back in March at BH, my source of choice for about 30 years. Out of the box, it has great features, not to mention the deservedly rave reviews for Fuji's color quality. The camera FEELS like a camera unlike a lot of compacts. The images have been nothing less than spectacular. There are choices of film replication. The video operation is super. And you can zoom in and out in video mode. Once I figured out where to up the volume level in the video mode, all was well. So here is it, late June and the bloom is falling from the rose. First, I could not download the Wi-Fi app from Fuji's web site. After several tries, I gave up on that function. I just use a card reader to transfer to my iMac. Then, the choices for film suddenly reduced to a dismal few. The Fuji Provia is the only color 'film' available now. Shooting a single frame is now a thing of the past. With no effort or prompting whatsoever, it is in motordrive mode firing off six shots in a row every time, unless I use the most gentle and quick movement of my trigger finger. Bottom line, I am sure there are fixes. But yofu will not find them in the User's Manual. At first, the manual was blessedly written in perfect English. It is also mercifully brief. Then, I came to realize the manual is TOO brief. No troubleshooting section. In fact, it can toss one's self-esteem under the bus as you try intuitively to figure out why stuff is not working. Then, the customer/tech support at Fuji's web site is nothing short of a meaningless death-march with nowhere to go for help. Trust me, none of your concerns will be one of those listed on their site. Since the images are great, I will continue to seek out tech support to get it back to when I lifted it from the box.

Just the right size for larger male hands. SR+ makes your pictures look smart but lots of manual options if you are smart. The lack of an articulated screen prevents selfies.(a good thing)

    X30 after one year

This is an update of my previous review. After one year, I have to say that this camera is almost unbeatable for travel, considering its price tag. It's not perfect, but what is ? My main comply is the so-so high iso performance. If you like to shoot low light pictures, please have a mini tripod in your bag and it will surprise you. The lens IS works very well and the lens itself is VERY sharp. Color rendering is awesome and the physical knobs and controls are a plus compared to other cameras. The EVF is the best i've seen in any camera of this class. It's even beter than the Sony RX100 III and IV. The user interface is another strong point. It's easy to use even to someone that never touched the camera. Much better than any Sony or Olympus. But be advised: For better results just forget about Adobe Lightroom for raw processing (like all x-trans Fuji's). Instead of it, try Iridient Developer or Raw Therapee. It's amazing how the image quality pops when you use the proper software. I would like to have a less awkward lens cap and better movie quality, but for the price I simply won't find anything better.

    Really Good...Almost Great

I love Fuji cameras and the signature Fuji Feel shooting experience their machines give you. I believe this little camera delivers on that promise. Great image quality, excellent usability, relatively fast lens and Fuji quality. Everything is there that I expected. Why this camera still only has a 2/3 sensor instead of a full 1 is beyond me, in this class it should have been the bigger sensor. That, I love the EVF and the tilting screen. I could have gone 5 stars if the images past 1600 ISO didn't turn to water color paintings. In RAW it's better but the JPEG noise reduction processing on the high ISO images is a little over zealous. The low light performance is not bad but it c ertainly isn't class leading. If you love the Fuji Experience and are willing to make a little sacrifice in the area of low light you won't be disappointed. A shame that this will be the last of the X line of zoom compacts. Would have loved to see an X40 with a 18-24mp 1 sensor.

Yes I would buy this camera again

After getting some valuable help from Larry at the Live Chat section at B&H, nearly all of the issues I mentioned in a previous Review, have melted away. I really do love this camera after retiring and selling off my pro Nikon, Hasselblad and Wisner gear. My criticism of Fuji's Owner's Manual, however, remains. It is for the take-it-out-of-the-box-and-start-shooting buyer. But if you want to learn how to really use the menu features, there is a real manual at the Fuji web site yet, it, too, is not that easy to find for this camera. Again, Larry took me through this particular page on the site and walked me through the areas of concern. YouTube videos from various gear critics find this to be a terrific camera with some exceptions. Highlight detail is a bit minimal. Otherwise as a camera for street or travel photography, X30 is great and a lot of fun. Import the photos into your computer (preferably with a large display) and you will be amazed by the color quality and detail. As one critic noted, it would have been nice if Fuji had raised the bar a bit from the X20 and designed it for at least 16MP. But the feel of a real camera with just enough heft to it, along with great image quality, makes me feel like I have everything I need. Once I am comfortable with X30, and with Fujifilm's menu options and the online manual, I will probably buy the new X Pro 2 in a few months. I would rate this a Five-Star camera with 16MP and better access to the camera's functions at the company site. So, Four-Star for now.

I would certainly buy this camera again

I have commented on this camera before owing to the joys and some frustrations with it. Fortunately, the B&H support team came to my rescue because the so-called support page at Fujifilm's web site doesn't even mention this camera at all. Point-blank, don't expect any help from Fujifilm when buying the latest and greatest in their line of fine cameras. It's like visiting one of the web/blog sites that has't been updated since 2012. Which makes the help from the B&H support staff so important. Larry patiently listened to my concerns via Live Chat and provided the answers not available in my owner's manual. So, buy this camera as a great addition or replacement to your photo gear. It is an amazing tool prompting me to consider the latest Fujifilm creation: the X-Pro 2.

Does this have threads for a filter? What size?
    Asked by: John
Yes, but the threads are 40mm, not the more common 40.5mm. The only reputable filter maker that makes 40mm filters is Marumi. But the way to go is to get the original hood for this camera Fuji's BH# FULHX10 or the 50% cheaper Vello LH-X10. These are 2 part hoods and the hood part screws off to reveal 52mm threads, everyone makes a full range of 52mm threaded filters. Why these hoods rather than the later Fuji one that has a UV filter also? Because it is much harder to use a polarizing filter with that hood as one can't unscrew the hood part to turn the filter- the hood part isn't really needed with a polarizer anyway. The x30 is a joy to use with a ploarizer- and is a joy in every way anyway- I love mine. These hoods are also a great idea too- filters or not. The Fuji one is slightly better built and the black finish is a perfect match to the camera, but the Vello has a more matte finish on the inside of the hood, better to control reflections. I cannot recommend the X30 highly enough, it is a joy to use, to look at and it is very well built. Hope this helps.

Read a customer review and they mentioned getting some additional accessories like a Power Sync Cord .Which one would be suitable for the Fuji X30 camera . ?
    Asked by: Astrid C.
If you mean a cord to use off-camera flash, the X30 does not have a standard connector. You could use a hot shoe adapter for off-camera flash via a cable. I spotted one Vello universal hot shoe adapter on the B&H site but you will need to satisfy yourself about compatibility with the X30.

I have the Fuji X30 camera and love it.I would like to know if there is an eyecup/eyepiece that allows me to look through the viewfinder without my face feeling flush to the camera.?Thank You
    Asked by: Astrid C.
TJ L is correct, Fujifilm doesn't make an eyecup extension for the X30, there is not a sliding channel to attach it to but, as suggested, you may find one that can stick to the viewfinder.
