GoPro CHDHY-401 Reviews

Finally

I wanted a GoPro for so long and finally caved in and bought one. Silver is handsdown a better buy than the Black, especially if you only have one GoPro. The LCD screen makes framing the shot much easier. The only thing is that it takes a long time to learn how to use the camera with the optimal settings and how to post edit to get photos and videos to look cool. I wish I bought it earlier before my vacation to have more time to learn how to use it properly for the best shots in all conditions. This is not an auto settings camera. Auto will only produce mediocre shots. Youtube has a long of advice though to teach you the basics.

Great System

Recently took it to a short adventure in Philippines with me. I did lots of diving, kayaking, and island hopping activities. It's compact, robust, produces some amazing footage and decent image quality (I was surprised with it's underwater and low light performance). I normally shoot with a mirrorless camera, but I couldn't justify the cost of an underwater housing, the rig, and all the lighting since I usually dive only once a year. While the image quality cannot be compared to a DSLR or mirrorless camera, it is still quite good, especially with the SRP red filter for diving, and much cheaper to put through some beating that are inevitable on any adventures. Highly recommended.

Currently the best all-round GoPro model available.

Currently my favourite GoPro camera. I prefer it over the Session and the Black, just because it offers all the features you need, has the most usefulness, and you are not paying for anything more that you don't need. With the Black, you don't get a screen which is really handy for framing and you are very likely not going to be filming 4K as it will just drain the battery faster and you will mostly be editing in 1080p. With the Session, you are limited with features and you do not have a screen and it is not much smaller than the Silver. The Silver beats both of these camera's in my opinion because it is much more useful for everyday action camera filming due to its size, capturing features, the built-in screen and at a better price.

Nice set of options

I have an original Hero (1?) and found the menu system archaic. Purchased the Hero4 Silver because of the improved menu GUI, built-in LCD and variety of frame-rate and resolution options. The only major differences from the 4-Black is 30P-4K (Silver has 15fps at 4K) I don't need 4K at 30fps at this time. Note: the 4-Black doesn't have an LCD display (a subtraction of a feature from the Silver). I'm using this camera for a film where I need wide angle in close-quarters. So far the camera is more user friendly than the original and seems to be performing as advertised.

Amazing camera

It's a dream come true to get this kind of quality for this price. I was looking at a zoom q8 for its audio quality but decided to go for the better video of this one and deal with the audio seperately. I bought this do do a high end production video to help sell our our and it will work perfect for that. I wasn't able to load the editing software from GoPro because my operating system on my Mac mini is one version to early but plan on using iMovie anyway for editing anyway. Getting all the mounting hardware and battery packs, sd card, in one package at a great price is the way to. Thanks

I use this driving the california coast, playing in the ocean, kayaking, riding bikes with my kid and jumping off rocks in Big Sur. Footage you can never capture without a GoPro. I love the silver bc no bulky attachment for a screen, easy to use (even for people who dont get gadgets), Small and easily carried, tied or locked on to any type of anchor for the best shots! I really have not found anything I do not like about the silver 4. As i have had the later models ... spending the extra cash is worth it. seriously ... save on the starbucks and get the whole package. Your going to eventually fall in love with it and wish you had.

Don't buy this. I bought this from B&H last week and right out of the package it had problems. It was making a helicopter noise in all the recordings. I did a google search for Go Pro Helicopter Noise to see if it's a common issue and sure enough it's a HUGE common issues with the hardware. Youtube has a ton of videos with people sharing their stories about the problem and all the hoops GO PRO makes them go through just to get their camera replaced, and even the replacement cameras have the issue. What kind of camera company has issues with new equipment right away. I'm contacting B&H today to see what my options are for returning this piece of junk.

GoPro usage

I only gave this product a 4-star rating because I do not utilize all of it's features. I mainly use this camera mounted in my trucks windshield in heavy traffic to record should anyone cut me off, or cause some type of motor vehicle accident. I purchased a couple of extra batteries, because depending on the setting(s), you can use a battery up pretty fast. This would be a super great product if it had one more feature. The ability to plug it in to your vehicle system, and not having to rely just on the battery. I would use the camera more, but I do have underwater, and Nikon dig. photo gear.

question

Is this camera good for live band/music videos with just stage lighting indoors?
Asked by: Steve B.
I have found the GoPros best for outdoors. When shooting some events indoors, especially with poor lighting there is lots of noise. Sound through the camera is ok but, certainly not broadcast quality. Basically, low light is not a strong point for this camera.

As long as it has the housing on it will. Repeated use will weaken the casing so it will need to be replaced eventually.
