Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine DS Overview

Utilizing a multi-layer coating process for consistent color rendition from lens to lens the Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine DS Lens answers the challenge of assembling a set of lenses over time. The lens comes in Sony E-Mount and features industry standard geared focus and iris rings that share common position with other Rokinon Cine DS lenses. To aid focus pullers who have to work both sides of the lens, the aperture and focus scales are marked on both sides of the lens.

This 35mm lens produces a 63.1° angle-of-view when used with a full-frame sensor camera. Hybrid aspherical lenses render sharply defined images with a minimum of distortion and chromatic aberrations, with a minimum focus distance of just under 12" from the lens. A removable petal shaped lens hood provides flare protection when shooting without a matte box, the lenses threaded front accepts a 77mm filter ring.

Please note that some cameras may require that Shutter Lock be disengaged when using this lens.

Ultra Multi Coated lenses minimize flare and ghosting, and the lenses are color matched to a standard eliminating the need to acquire an entire set of lenses at the same time.
Industry-standard gearing for focus and aperture rings. Each lens in the Rokinon DS series share common focus and iris gear ring positions, which speeds up lens changes as accessories such as follow focus units or iris motors don't have to be re-positioned.
"Declicked" aperture ring for smooth iris pulls.
A minimum focusing distance of 12" allows you to get up close to your subject.
A removable petal-type lens hood provides flare protection without a matte box.
The lens opens up to T1.5, providing the capability for low light shooting or creating extremely shallow depth of field.

Sharp and Simple!

Using on an A7 III, as a higher end webcam. Mostly used wide open, or at 2.0, find it is easy to focus, image is sharp, really nice bokeh, with my background about 3 feet behind me. Certainly outperforms the Sony SEL 28/70 3.5 kit lens! Feels solid, well built, little vignetting and edge distortion, but that can be fixed via aperture adjustments. Worth the price!

What a deal

I have a number of EF-S lenses for my Canon C100 and recently got this lens for my kit. What a difference. It would be far too lengthy of a post for me to tell you everything I love about it, but I'll just say that if you are considering a less expensive Cine lens, this should be the one you get.

Adaptable & Great Value

This lens has great versatility and if you're going to buy just one lens to start with, this is the one to get! The focus is sharp and very user-friendly, especially if this is your first time working with a film camera! I couldn't be happier.

OK Lens for money

Beautiful colors and rendering, solid build so must be heavy. BUT Massive focus breathing is hard to swallow. Still worth the money for on-budget creators

Not even a rokinon

Ordered this lens, not sure if Rokinon and Samyang are the same.... but the rokinon is $50 more. Order came in a Rokinon box, opened it up and a Samyang lens is in the box. Looks identical to the Rokinon lens in the picture. Just crappy.

I can finally stop carrying around multiple lenses

I do a lot of run & gun shooting and like to operate as light as possible, but need something that still provides the cinema-quality results. I used to achieve this by switching in and out a variety of new and vintage lenses, but I can do pretty much everything I need for the documentary films I work on with this one lens and a drone.

Does anyone know if or how much this lens Focus ...

Does anyone know if or how much this lens Focus Breathes? I bought a SLR Magic MicroPrime Cine 50mm and was shocked/disappointed to discover how much that lens Focus Breathes. It's a decent lens, but because of the Focus Breathing, I feel like it's kind of useless. I might try Rokinon if I knew they had less or no Focus Breathing.

This is designed as an affordable option for a cinema lens. You will experience some breathing with this lens.

question

A BH review states: For it to fit the E-Mount, there is a piece that's been constructed onto the end, so it's a little longer than in b&h pictures. But still works fine. This is my concern. Lens specs claim this lens' length is 137.5mm compared to canon's at or around 111mm. What is this mickey mouse adapter thing? Owners have replied saying this is a proprietary constructed emount lens. Thanks for your time.
Asked by: Robert
The answer is: it's all about depth. In order that Rokinon can offer their lenses at such low prices, they make a basic design that can be modified to fit any camera. Since Canon and Nikon lenses need a lot of depth in order to properly focus on the sensor of their mirror box cameras, the Rokinon Canon/Nikon lenses are short. However, in order that the same lens design can work on a Sony mirrorless camera, the same depth must be maintained. Thus extra length is added to the E-mount Rokinon's. That is why Rokinon E-mount lenses are bigger than Canon/Nikon. The good quality is maintained and performance is just as good on the E-mount lenses as on the Canon/Nikon ones.

question

what's the difference between?Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine DS Lens for Sony E-MountRokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine AS UMC Lens for Sony E Mount
Asked by: Davicito C.
The DS in the new version stands for Dual Scale which means there is a smart and dumb side scale for operating the lens from either side of the camera, instead of the top side position that the other versions offered. The focus and iris gear positions have been moved along the axis in order to maintain a consistent position from lens to lens making swapping a very easy when using a follow focus or motors. Additionally, each of the lenses is carefully color matched to a certain degree in order to sustain a specific cinematic look throughout the set. The optics however in each set, remain the same as the non-DS set.

Is this lens compatible with the Viltrox EF-M2?
Asked by: EJ
If your Viltrox have EF mount, I don't see why not. This Rokinon lenses work perfectly with DSLR, such Canon, Nikon and so on. Good thing is that you can also increase or decrease the aperture of the lease manually. Do not expect Auto focus, since this are lenses normally build for a cinematic looks.
