OWC / Other World Computing OWCTB2SRKIT0GB overview

  • 1Description

Add the capabilities of Thunderbolt 2 speed and storage to your Mac with the ThunderBay 4 Four-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array (RAID 5 Edition) from OWC / Other World Computing. This is a four bay, SATA III 6 Gb/s enclosure and each bay will support a 3.5" hard drive or a 2.5" hard drive or SSD. Each 2.5" drive requires an optional NewerTech AdaptaDrive adapter. Once drives are installed, you can RAID them via the included SoftRAID 5 for Thunderbay software. While this array is pre-configured as RAID 5, it also supports RAID 0, 1, 4, and 1+0. For those who do not require RAID support, this array may also be configured as a JBOD.

The ThunderBay 4 will provide you with plenty of space to store files such as music, photos, movies, and documents. It also allows you to operate a production workflow with 2K and 4K video in Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, and Avid Media Composer, audio in Avid Pro Tools and Logic Pro X, and photos in Adobe Photoshop, Apple Aperture and Adobe Lightroom. As this array comes configured as a RAID 5, it features read speeds up to 580 MB/s and write speeds up to 569 MB/s. RAID 5 helps to increase performance, while also reserving one of the drives for data redundancy. If reconfigured as a RAID 0, the ThunderBay 4 features read speeds up to 878 MB/s and write speeds up to 924 MB/s.

The ThunderBay 4 comes with two Thunderbolt 2 ports that provide bi-directional data transfer rates of 20 Gb/s. Dual Thunderbolt 2 ports allow you to daisy-chain up to six devices such as additional ThunderBays, 4K displays, and more. To help ensure a smooth operating environment, the array uses a 92mm nosie-quieting fan.

The ThunderBay 4 is compatible with Mac OS 10.9 and later. It may be used as a boot drive, but does not support Boot Camp and operates using a 100-240 VAC power supply that runs at 50/60 Hz. Included with this ThunderBay 4 array is SoftRAID 5 for Thunderbay, a 3.3' / 1.0m Thunderbolt cable, an 3-prong power cable, 2 keys for the front panel lock, and a Mac compatible software bundle.

Please bear in mind that while users are free to select drives of their choice for this RAID, variable spin drives, such as WD Red and WD Green, are not recommended. The issue with variable spin drives is that because the drives could potentially be spinning at different speeds, this could lead to constant rebuilds within the RAID, as it could think that one or more drives are not in operation. While WD Red and WD Green drives are specifically being mentioned, please bear in mind that variable speed drives also manufactured by other companies, such as Seagate, are also not recommended.

Cooling
ThunderBay utilizes an open "flow-thru" vented design with a 92mm, low-turbulence, noise-quieting fan to keep the drives running cool and reliably
Multi-Drive
Daisy-chain up to six ThunderBays for massive storage capabilities and increased performance, or connect multiple ThunderBays to multiple Thunderbolt 2 ports to achieve exponential speed capabilities
Vibration Dampened
ThunderBay's drive isolating design reduces sonic resonance and is aided by over-sized, rugged, vibration-absorbing, non-skid feet
DisplayPort 1.2 Support
The Thunderbolt ports also support DisplayPort 1.2 that allows daisy-chaining displays through the drive

OWC / Other World Computing OWCTB2SRKIT0GB reviews

ThunderBay 4 Four-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array (RAID 5 Edition) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not bad, but some hidden issues It's quite fast, I got 600MB/s on RAID5 with AJA test. This is not obvious that you have to buy RAID software for $ to have it worked. This is not clear how to deal with this SW RAID licence when move from one computer to another. I've sent email to support, but no this is no response.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product BUT possible MAJOR software issue Seems like excellent build quality, great enclosure, good drive mounts, etc. My biggest issue right now is with SoftRAID, the included RAID management software. Setup was easy. I purchased the empty Thunderbay so I could add my own drives. Budget was an issue, so I only created the RAID5 array with 3 drives, planning on expanding to a 4th. Then I discovered that it is impossible to add drives like that. You have to completely back up everything, format all drives, rebuild a new array, and move everything back on to do this. Total pain!! Wish I'd known that ahead of time. I would still buy the product, but I would have set it up with all 4 drives the first time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Never worked correctly I ordered the Thunderbay MINI ssd 2TB set up for Raid 0. They will charge you and xtra $100+ for their Raid Software sold separately. after all that. It regularly made my 2 week old late 2015 iMac Crash when doing transfers, and the drive would randomly eject itself for no reason. OWC Customer service didnt seem very interested in helping, and presumed it was an issue with El Capitan OSX. It and took multiple times contacting them before I got any return answer back. OWC sent me a replacement enclosure for me to test out, but wouldnt send a full replacement Thunderbay with new owc ssd's. Made no sense to me..???. It still didnt work correctly. I finally got fed up and returned the drive for a refund. Going to go try another drive company now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cheapest way to make bulk storage Cloud storage is all very well and good but if I need fast bulk storage for my 2015 Macbook Pro only a local store will do. The MBP's Thunderbolt 2 ports make a Thunderbolt RAID attractive and the OWC empty 4 drive box is about as cheap a solution as one can find. I had four 2 terabyte drives pulled from old systems. I consolidated these in the OWC box and uses Softraid to generate a RAID5 array with 6 TB of storage. Although the Softraid startup is a bit clunky, once configured the storage is quick, compact, and easy to use. I keep it unpowered and offline most of the time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No brainer... This product is as easy and as good as it gets for a RAID storage solution for a Thunderbolt interface... Easy installations/access to hard drives... Easy connection to computer... Easy setup of RAID software...software not required if just using a JBOD configuration... Nice and quiet operation - no loud fan noise... Nothing bad to say about it...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fast, Easy set up but noisy Put two 4TB HGST Deskstar drives, one 3TB drive and a 500GB SSD. The two 4TB's were set up as RAID 0 for performance. Have a Thunderbay 8TB array that has all the back ups. Installation was easy. Using SoftRaid, which was bundled with enclosure, worked well and it took almost no time for the full set up. The only problem was that you had to know the serial number to use to activate SoftRAID is the number on the box and not the serial number on the unit. They are different. It is exceptionally fast - faster than the 8TB Thunderbay (also set up as a four drive RAID 0). However when it is reading/writing large chunks of data it makes quite a noise. Someone mentioned popping popcorn -agree. Service form B&H was fantastic with delivery to South Africa 4 days after ordering.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than Drobo! So far anyway.... If you don't already own Software Raid make sure you buy this enclosure with the software included. The box is built like a tank, metal instead of the plastic Drobo. The Drobo I had failed before any of the drives it was protecting so out the window it went! I've had this unit for over a year now and it's still going strong with no issues. The only noise it makes is a low hush from the built it fan no loader than any other computer fan (oh and it doesn't run all the time). Any other noise will be coming from the hard drives you select to put in it! Some are nosier than others, if quietness is important to you then chose your hard drives accordingly. If you want a 4 bay enclosure with Thunderbolt 2 then this unit comes highly recommended. This also pairs well with a OWC Docking Station with Thunderbolt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Solution for Video Storage I'm a video editor and experimental filmmaker, as such I regularly have large databases of footage to deal with. I paired this device with 4 WD PRO NAS drives in RAID 5 and it runs significantly faster than any of the other devices I've used previously. (Around 350MB/s Write and 450-500MB Read) Very snappy response using Adobe CC applications like Premiere. The set-up is very simple assuming you have a basic Torx screwdriver set. Drive installation was easy, software set-up was also very simple and helped you through it. SOFTRAID is a breeze to deal with. I also like the look of it it's unobtrusive, professional looking and minimalist. The black aluminum fits well with Apple Hardware. My only quams with the device is that although it is very quiet in general, sometimes it can cause some vibrational humm under heavy use. (I have it on my desk next to my secondary mini-displayport cinema display that I loop through it.) Nothing that bad though, I've seen WD and LaCie single drive enclosures noisier than this. I'd definetly recommend this product to anyone who wants a BYOD solution and doesn't want to be beholden to buying replacement drives from the drive manufacturer.
