Add 12TB of Thunderbolt 2 storage to your Mac with the ThunderBay 4 12TB 4-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array (4 x 3TB, RAID 5 Edition) from OWC / Other World Computing. These drives are pre-configured for RAID 5 via software. 12TB provides you with plenty of space to store files such as music, photos, movies, and documents, but this array also allows you to operate a production workflow with 2K video, 4K video, and audio.

Within the array are four bays that each house a single 3TB hard drive. Each included 3.5" drive connects to the array via the SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, has a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, and a 64MB cache, for a total system cache of 256MB. Since the array ships with four drives, they can be software configured as RAID 0, 1, 4, 5, and 1+0, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. However, please be aware this array comes pre-formatted and is software configured as a RAID 5 volume, which uses one of the 3TB drives for data redundancy, leaving users with 9TB of usable storage.

This volume will be recognized on systems running with OS X 10.9.3 and later, and requires the included SoftRAID 5 via download for Mac OS X 10.8.5 or earlier. RAID 5 allows read speeds of up to 543 MB/s and write speeds of up to 528 MB/s. If you do reconfigure the drives to run in a RAID 0 configuration, read speeds will go up to 780 MB/s and write speeds will go up to 759 MB/s.

The ThunderBay 4 comes with two Thunderbolt 2 ports which allow you to daisy-chain up to six devices such as additional ThunderBays, 4K displays, and more. Thunderbolt 2 offers a single 20 Gb/s bi-directional channel that allows you to stream and write 4K video at the same time. To help ensure a smooth operating environment, the array uses a 92mm noise-quieting fan.

Included with this ThunderBay 4 array is SoftRAID 5, a 3.3' Thunderbolt cable, a 3-prong power cable, 2 keys for the front panel lock, and a Mac compatible software bundle.

General Features

Cooling
ThunderBay utilizes an open "flow-thru" vented design with a 92mm, low-turbulence, noise-quieting fan to keep the drives running cool and reliably
Multi-Drive
Daisy-chain up to six ThunderBays for massive storage capabilities and increased performance, or connect multiple ThunderBays to multiple Thunderbolt 2 ports to achieve exponential speed capabilities
Vibration Dampened
ThunderBay's drive isolating design reduces sonic resonance and is aided by over-sized, rugged, vibration-absorbing, non-skid feet
DisplayPort 1.2 Support
The Thunderbolt ports also support DisplayPort 1.2 that allows daisy-chaining displays through the drive

    ThunderBay 4 12TB 4-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array (4 x 3TB, RAID 5 Edition) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Software needed to run properly- not plug and play. When I originally connected to my MacPro - it said it was formatted so I just plugged in and started using. Then I noticed it was really sluggish and the icon had a Red Exclamation Point on it. I contacted SoftRaid and they said I needed to download the lastest SoftRaid software and drivers and input my serial number. When I went to do that it said my free trial of SoftRaid expired so I had to PURCHASE SoftRaid software just to get it to work properly and for the icon to be the Thunderbay icon. Apparently you need this software so that it can monitor itself. I've never purchased a raid that required software - be warned.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quiet & fast, but install SOFTRAID Very quiet, fast speeds using RAID5 avg. 540MBs read / 560MBs write. Mine came with the new Zalman fan installed so it makes very minimal noise unless the drives are accessing at full tilt. One thing to note the drives come pre-configured to just work in RAID5 mode but my write speeds were only 150MBs. I had to contact OWC to get access and my serial number for SOFTRAID 5. Once I installed the software my read/write speeds went up to advertised speeds. Please note this is not the fault of BH Photo but OWC the manufacturer. So far very happy with this product and the packaging could withstand a drop off a cliff which was a nice bonus. 1 star deduction only because I had to contact the vendor to get advertised speeds.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Raid box is nice, supplied drives are not I probably would NOT have purchased this if there was some headsup on the drives models used. For the 12TB box it's a Toshiba DT01ACA300, which has a really terrible fail rate according to reviews. Would recommend anyone who buys the 12TB model to HARD TEST the units over AT LEAST a month to weed out bad drives, and then prepare to ship back bad drives etc. Hopeless - why would OWC save a buck on drives like this?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best bang for buck I've found I've been running 2 of these with 12TB configured in RAID 5. I actually tested these setup as RAID 0, but interestingly, it wasn't much faster than RAID 5. I'm using one array as my main data drive and the 2nd for TimeMachine backups. I've been quite happy with them so far. The build quality is solid and the drives aren't very noisy. Again, I'm running 2 at once, and I can hear some fan noise, but it's not that bad. Setup with the SoftRaid software was extremely easy. Just remember that you need to download & install this software, then get your license key by typing in your serial number at the link provided in the documentation. Considering that similar products from Promise or G-Tech cost about twice as much, I'm pretty happy I was able to get 2 of these for the price of 1 of those.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Products! I finally upgraded my aging 2009 Mac Pro to the new 2013, so I needed to upgrade my external drives also. Thunderbolt is super fast compared to the old eSata units, (which were also OWC Mercury Elite). Bought 2 of these, one for media and the other as a scratch disk. I have used the OWS Mercury Elite drives for 6 years and have been very happy. My old scratch disk died, but OWC replaced it without question as it was still under the 3 year warranty. What can I say. Buying them again after 6 years of use should say that I am sold on the OWC Elite drives...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast, economical RAID system This RAID system is extremely fast, which is great for video work. I like the flexibility of the SoftRAID software, and the possibility of future expansion. Installation of the supplied hard drives went without a hitch, and it booted right up. I've used several OWC products, and I've been really happy with all of them. The only negative is that it would be nice to have a longer Thunderbolt cable. The cost of a longer Thunderbolt cable can get pretty pricey. Other than that, I highly recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product Came already setup with RAID 5. Didn't have to do anything. All the software was on the drive, just had to go to the site and register the product. Drives came packed amazingly well, in industrial bubble wrap. Perfect product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from VERY, VERY fast !!! I bought this drive for 4k video work hoping for good storage and fast read/write speeds. This RAID PEGGED the BlackMagic disk speed tester !! Very fast and has been very easy to use. One thing to be careful of is to make sure you have the proper software and installed correctly.
