OWC / Other World Computing OWCTB2SRT16.0S overview

  • 1Description

Add 16TB of Thunderbolt 2 storage to your Mac with the ThunderBay 4 16TB 4-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array (4 x 4TB, RAID 5 Edition) from OWC / Other World Computing. These drives are pre-configured for RAID 5 via software. 16TB provides you with plenty of space to store files such as music, photos, movies, and documents, but this array also allows you to operate a production workflow with 2K video, 4K video, and audio.

Within the array are four bays that each house a single 4TB hard drive. Each included 3.5" drive connects to the array via the SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, has a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, and a 128MB cache, for a total system cache of 512MB. Since the array ships with four drives, they can be software configured as RAID 0, 1, 4, 5, and 1+0, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. However, please be aware this array comes pre-formatted and is software configured as a RAID 5 volume, which uses one of the 4TB drives for data redundancy, leaving users with 12TB of usable storage.

This volume will be recognized on systems running with OS X 10.9.3 and later, and requires the included SoftRAID 5 via download for Mac OS X 10.8.5 or earlier. RAID 5 allows read speeds of up to 530 MB/s and write speeds of up to 528 MB/s. If you do reconfigure the drives to run in a RAID 0 configuration, read speeds will go up to 723 MB/s and write speeds will go up to 711 MB/s.

The ThunderBay 4 comes with two Thunderbolt 2 ports which allow you to daisy-chain up to six devices such as additional ThunderBays, 4K displays, and more. Thunderbolt 2 offers a single 20 Gb/s bi-directional channel that allows you to stream and write 4K video at the same time. To help ensure a smooth operating environment, the array uses a 92mm noise-quieting fan.

Included with this ThunderBay 4 array is SoftRAID 5, a 3.3' Thunderbolt cable, a 3-prong power cable, 2 keys for the front panel lock, and a Mac compatible software bundle.

General Features

Cooling
ThunderBay utilizes an open "flow-thru" vented design with a 92mm, low-turbulence, noise-quieting fan to keep the drives running cool and reliably
Multi-Drive
Daisy-chain up to six ThunderBays for massive storage capabilities and increased performance, or connect multiple ThunderBays to multiple Thunderbolt 2 ports to achieve exponential speed capabilities
Vibration Dampened
ThunderBay's drive isolating design reduces sonic resonance and is aided by over-sized, rugged, vibration-absorbing, non-skid feet
DisplayPort 1.2 Support
The Thunderbolt ports also support DisplayPort 1.2 that allows daisy-chaining displays through the drive

Software

SoftRAID 5
SoftRAID combines advanced RAID modes, fast performance, monitoring, email notification, and fast rebuild capabilities that only software RAID can deliver. ThunderBay 4 models with drives come pre-configured in RAID 5, and are plug-and-play ready with OS X 10.9.3 or later. Advanced features such as drive notification and monitoring require SoftRAID installation
Prosoft Engineering Data Backup 3
Data Backup 3 is a software utility for Mac that allows you to backup, restore and synchronize your valuable data with minimal effort

OWC / Other World Computing OWCTB2SRT16.0S reviews

    ThunderBay 4 16TB 4-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array (4 x 4TB, RAID 5 Edition) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good! I'm a motion graphic designer/VFX artist, I bought this for storage and backup of my freelance work at home. The enclosure is very sturdy. So far no issues. A pretty easy set up, you have to download the SoftRaid software from the website and you enter the serial number from the hardware to get a full license. I'm keeping it in the pre-formatted RAID 5 configuration which gives me 12TB on a 16TB setup. Copied about 8TB to the drive in the first few days, pretty quick and easy. Working off it in After Effects has been good so far. The drives do go to sleep after inactivity but once they're fired up it's pretty smooth sailing. Seems to handle multitasking pretty well also.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good. Easy connect, easy to get running. Using for video production. Solid construction. Quiet. Only complaint: the included thunderbolt cable seemed to not work properly - hesitation when accessing the drive and slow screen build of volume contents. When I switched to an Apple cable the results were significant extremely noticeable. Other than that I'm very satisfied, will probably get another. Too soon to talk about reliability...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what it says Doing what it says it does. Easy setup. It's working great with my 2011 MacBook Pro. Great with Final Cut Pro and after effects. I can't attest to reliability yet because I've only had it a month. No signs of problems though. I definitely suggest loading soft raid on your computer because the transfer speeds increase considerably when you do. Great product. OWC will have more business from me in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quite for spinners Lot's of space, very fast, fans and drives are quite for spinning drives... Setup is easy. It comes with trial software and then it asks you to purchase them for a large fee.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast and reliable We bought this to replace a Drobo 5D and thus far it has greatly surpassed that device in every regard. We have the array setup as RAID 5 using the included SoftRAID reducing our 16TB to 12TB unformatted and then partitioned in 2, the first 10TB for video and the last 2TB for photo. It's important that you consider what is on your first partition as it will be considerably faster to access. We've had the array for 10 months now with no hiccups in reliability or performance. We access the drive primarily through our primary video/photo workstation iMac over thunderbolt, but we also access it over our gigabit network (and it has no trouble saturating that network's bandwidth). I'll add disk speed test images, but with our setup, the video partition most recently tested at 370/400 MB/s R/W at 80% storage capacity (brand new 0% storage capacity it tested at 365/525 MB/s) while the the photo partition tested at 270/285 MB/s R/W at 60% storage capacity. If you're planning to use the array as RAID0, I tested it at 520/600 MB/s brand new and I'd expect that you wouldn't see a drop in read performance as you fill it up the way I've seen with RAID5. All in all, it's been great for us and it's gone down in price considerably since we first purchased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great build quality, easy setup Overall very happy with this enclosure, however?I'm a little disappointed in the speed when in RAID 5. Slower speeds are to be expected in a 4-bay RAID, but it's still slower than expected. With several TB of content on it, it clocks in at about 350?400MB/s. Softraid made it very easy to configure and hasn't given me any problems at all.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Relatively Inexpensive The drive works ... overtime. While it is a large capacity drive for a relatively low price, it has quirks. It does work (mostly) as advertised, and has competitive rates of transfer, on the main volume. As another reviewer pointed out, it seems different volumes have varying transfer rates in my testing. It is hard to get an accurate read on the transfer speeds because the drive is constantly showing activity ... from where? Maybe it is some sort of software housekeeping routine, caching routines, or some other feature of SoftRAID ... who knows. It is a bit annoying to have the drives chattering constantly as they are accessed - and they are a bit noisy on the 16Tb unit. I have an 8-bay Areca RAID that is much quieter during access than this ThunderBay4. My units with hardware RAID make the requested transfers then shut up. The ThunderBay4 continues to show intermittent activity long after the transfer is shown as complete. I may pay the premium and go with the Promise Pegasus2 R4 instead.
