OWC / Other World Computing OWCTB2SRT20.0S overview

  • 1Description

Add 20TB of Thunderbolt 2 storage to your Mac with the ThunderBay 4 20TB 4-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array (4 x 5TB, RAID 5 Edition) from OWC / Other World Computing. These drives are pre-configured for RAID 5 via software. 20TB provides you with plenty of space to store files such as music, photos, movies, and documents, but this array also allows you to operate a production workflow with 2K video, 4K video, and audio.

Within the array are four bays that each house a single 5TB hard drive. Each included 3.5" drive connects to the array via the SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, has a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, and a 32MB cache, for a total system cache of 128MB. Since the array ships with four drives, they can be software configured as RAID 0, 1, 4, 5, and 1+0, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. However, please be aware this array comes pre-formatted and is software configured as a RAID 5 volume, which uses one of the 5TB drives for data redundancy, leaving users with 15TB of usable storage.

This volume will be recognized on systems running with OS X 10.9.3 and later, and requires the included SoftRAID 5 via download for Mac OS X 10.8.5 or earlier. RAID 5 allows read speeds of up to 580 MB/s and write speeds of up to 569 MB/s. If you do reconfigure the drives to run in a RAID 0 configuration, read speeds will go up to 790 MB/s and write speeds will go up to 777 MB/s.

The ThunderBay 4 comes with two Thunderbolt 2 ports which allow you to daisy-chain up to six devices such as additional ThunderBays, 4K displays, and more. Thunderbolt 2 offers a single 20 Gb/s bi-directional channel that allows you to stream and write 4K video at the same time. To help ensure a smooth operating environment, the array uses a 92mm noise-quieting fan.

Included with this ThunderBay 4 array is SoftRAID 5, a 3.3' Thunderbolt cable, a 3-prong power cable, 2 keys for the front panel lock, and a Mac compatible software bundle.

General Features

ThunderBay utilizes an open "flow-thru" vented design with a 92mm, low-turbulence, noise-quieting fan to keep the drives running cool and reliably
Daisy-chain up to six ThunderBays for massive storage capabilities and increased performance, or connect multiple ThunderBays to multiple Thunderbolt 2 ports to achieve exponential speed capabilities
Vibration Dampened
ThunderBay's drive isolating design reduces sonic resonance and is aided by over-sized, rugged, vibration-absorbing, non-skid feet
DisplayPort 1.2 Support
The Thunderbolt ports also support DisplayPort 1.2 that allows daisy-chaining displays through the drive

SoftRAID 5
SoftRAID combines advanced RAID modes, fast performance, monitoring, email notification, and fast rebuild capabilities that only software RAID can deliver. ThunderBay 4 models with drives come pre-configured in RAID 5, and are plug-and-play ready with OS X 10.9.3 or later. Advanced features such as drive notification and monitoring require SoftRAID installation
Prosoft Engineering Data Backup 3
Data Backup 3 is a software utility for Mac that allows you to backup, restore and synchronize your valuable data with minimal effort

OWC / Other World Computing OWCTB2SRT20.0S reviews

    ThunderBay 4 20TB 4-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array (4 x 5TB, RAID 5 Edition) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best bang for the buck video editing drive This is really the best option for those editing on a Mac. No only do you get speeds that are slightly faster than the average SSD, you also get MUCH more storage capacity AND data protection. In my tests with the 20TB version I get about 505MB/s write and 580MB/s read. It's setup from the factory in Raid5 so you don't have to initialize the drives which saves time. In Raid 5 mode (best mode) you get 15TB of usable space as 5TB is setup for data protection. If one of the drives ever dies you slide it out and replace with a new one and you won't loose any data. I've been suggesting these to people for over a year now and I'm going to keep doing so. I have a video review of this drive on YouTube if you want to see it in action, speed tests, unboxing, and daisy chaining to a display just do a search for Max Yuryev Thunderbay and you'll find it. The 1.5 to 2.5 times as much. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a fast and reliable drive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Piece of Hardware (To Date) Although I can't speak to the longevity of this device, so far, it has met or exceeded all of my expectations. I am using this as my primary scratch for video editing on my new iMac setup. I did extensive research and found this OWC unit to be the best bang for the buck. I have just started making the transition from my 2009 mac pro to this and have been thoroughly impressed. I can consistantly get read/write speeds of around 550-600mb/s, which blows a standard single harddrive away. This will be perfect for editing for years to come. (I have the 20tb model which leaves you with 15tb of useable space because of the RAID5). Finally, please be sure to install the included Softraid software (via download) on your system. Otherwise, the unit will show up but you will not get any sort of RAID backup and your speeds will not be where they should be.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good though long-term use will really show how good this RAID really is. So far: setup was a breeze, it was immediately recognized by my MacBook Pro and its read/write speed is better than I've ever experienced before. One negative: the drive/enclosure can be loud.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast and reliable I have 3 OWC drives and they have worked very well. The SoftRaid for Raid 5 works quite well. On one of the older OWC Raid drives it detected an increase in bad sectors and recommended changing out 1 of the 4 internal drives. It automatically rebuilt the data from the redundant data on the other 3 disks - fast, automatic and easy. OWC is my first choice for any large drive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far, so good Easy to install. No issues so far. We've had it for just a week. Hey, let's face it, storage is not sexy. I cannot get excited about purchasing a RAID, but they very important and must work. We have purchased several OWC products in the past, such as SSD's and adapters, and they are still working years later.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tons of Storage We filled up a few smaller systems and needed to get all of our projects in one localized place with fast access and solid backup. This was a great solution to tie everything together, and the case is way way sturdier than expected. It's heavy and feels like it could take a beating (always good news).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best Bang for the Buck!! Im using this for 4k Red footage video storage primary. And you get amazingly fast speeds and quality + data redundancy for the price. The only side down i can think of, it is kinda noisy sometimes, but the noise come from the spinning disks, not the fan, so not an actual issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good JBOD enclosure I have 3 of these and use them to store last years jobs. The fans are not too loud. I've had one of them about 4 years and no problems.
