This version of Autodesk's industrial surface design software, Alias Design 2015, is a single user license that runs on Windows 64-bit and OS X. New for version 2015 comes a range of tool enhancements as well as new features, including skin tool enhancements, the inclusion of Form Factor in the Freeform Blend Tool, Shading in Clay, and isophote lines for surface flow.

What's New for 2015

Revolve Tool Enhancements
The Barrel and Helix tools are now grouped under a Side Glass surface type. Barrel and Helix, previously separate tools, are part of the Revolve tool in Alias. Pitch functionality is included in the Revolve options to allow users to create objects like springs and threads
Skin Tool Enhancements
Enhanced Bezier surface quality supports segmented rail curves. Improved Proportional Crown lets you choose direction and adjust the surface crown
Form Factor Included in Freeform Blend Tool
In addition to Shape controls, Freeform Blend uses Form Factor controls in fillet-like situations, which makes it easier to match the shape between blends and fillets
Enhanced Profile Tool
Rotate or slide a profile to touch a curve or surface with the updated Profile tool. Enhancements in profile capability help you create profiled surfaces between two sets of surfaces. The 2015 release gives new options to control your final shape and multiple approaches to rotate or slide a profile to touch a target surface
3D Surface Array Tool
Create arrays across surfaces in multiple directions with the enhanced Surface Array tool. With the 2015 release, Surface Array allows you to create an array of objects along any surface in 3D space
Light Tunnel
Create linear reflections on a model in a cylindrical tunnel of lights. Study your surfaces in a virtual lighting studio. The Light Tunnel is a visual surface evaluation tool that provides a controlled lighting and reflection model to help you understand your designs better
Shading in Clay
Give your model the look of clay by shading it with a low-specularity clay color. Designers often rely on clay material to help study the subtleties of surface shape and shadow. The Clay with Ambient Occlusion feature provides a temporary method of assigning a clay material to your design for surface evaluation. Click to temporarily change all of your shaders to a clay material. When finished, your model goes back to its original form
Isophotes for Surface Flow
Display thin, sharp isophote lines to alert you to possible errors in your design. Isophotes are the thin lines that show the path of surface flow - use it to show the movement of sand over a desert or to represent the underlying shape of snow in a mountain range. In Alias, this surface evaluation tool highlights spots of the same brightness in your design, alerting you to possible imperfections in your model

Concept Design and Product Modeling

Sketching and Illustration Tools
Capture and communicate concept design ideas freehand without switching applications. Alias includes a comprehensive set of sketching, illustration, and image editing tools - pencils, paintbrushes, airbrushes, markers, erasers, and special texture and effects brushes. The integrated 2D/3D environment enables product designers to create sketches at real-world scale and draw over imported 3D CAD data to evaluate design feasibility
  • Draw symmetrical objects and get instant feedback on a drawing's proportions
  • Duplicate symmetric brush strokes in bilateral or radial symmetry
  • Capture perfect lines, circles, and ellipses with predictive strokes
Flexible Product Modeling
  • Choose the best modeling technique for the task at hand
  • Generate multiple design iterations quickly
  • Make subtle corrections or radical changes easily with flexible tools
Dynamic Shape Modeling
Experiment with shapes at any stage of the design process. Quickly manipulate your product model and explore variations on 3D forms without rebuilding geometry. Make real-time modifications and shape objects dynamically in design reviews.
  • Sculpt geometry by manipulating a customizable lattice rig created around an object
  • Bend geometry using a curve to control deformation
  • Twist geometry around a single-axis curve
  • Conform geometry to the shape of another surface
Array Tool
Create arrays of objects, linearly or radially, from an original set of objects. This is useful when modeling products such as grills, speakers, and wheels
Duplicate Objects Around Curves
The Path Array tool duplicates objects around curves into "stitch patterns." This function duplicates one or more objects and places the copies at equal distances along one or more curves, producing the stitch pattern effect. You can control the spacing, range, position, and orientation of these duplicates
3D Sculpting
Refine your 3D models through an intuitive, iterative process. Evolve design concepts from idea to reality
  • Sculpt surfaces by directly adjusting surface control vertices
  • Use curve-based tools to define a shape at its edges; use direct modeling to adjust the shape at any point
  • Maintain complete control, achieving the exact form and surface quality you need

Design Communication and Product Visualization

Interactive Product Visualization
Quickly evaluate design options with real-time interactive product visualization in Alias software. Tell the story of your product design in context using geometric environments to create realistic scenes
  • Use shading models to increase realism, evaluate surfaces, and design forms
  • Render shading based on an omnidirectional light source for shadows and soft shading
  • Apply material color, texture, glow, incandescence, bump, and displacement
  • Quickly verify surface conditions with curvature maps, zebra stripes, and draft angles
Compelling Photorealistic Renderings
Use product visualization for photorealistic renderings in print, video, animation, or interactive presentations. Image-based lighting in Alias supports high dynamic range imaging (HDRI) as the light source for interactive product visualization and rendering. The result is high-resolution imagery for evaluating, presenting, and marketing your product designs
  • Instantly save high-resolution images of any modeling window created without a full software render
  • Compose images that display wireframes, canvas planes, or fully shaded models to create turntables or 360-degree interactive QuickTime VR files
  • Incorporate ambient occlusion calculations for soft shadows with Alias raycast and raytrace renderers
  • Add realism with HDRI support
Annotation Tools
Built-in bookmarks, pencils, and markers help you review designs. Use your entire screen to work with just the necessary interface aspects
Data Exchange
Share your design data with mechanical design and engineering software, such as Inventor and AutoCAD, using the DWG format. Verify geometry created in Alias 3D product design software to predict and diagnose problems before designs go to engineering
  • {Provides CAD translators for industry-standard data formats, such as DXF, IGES, and STEP
  • Exchange data with other CAD software packages, such as CATIA, ICEM, NX, PTC Granite based systems (Pro/E and Creo), JT, and SolidWorks software (available natively or using DirectConnect translators)
  • Prototype using STL output for stereo-lithography or ZPR for high-definition 3D color prints, as well as output data for CNC machining
  • Validate, repair, and make your models CAD-ready with Inventor Fusion software

Surface Modeling and Class-A Surfacing

Automated Surface Creation and Editing
Accelerate the design of precision surfaces. Alias automates many common design tasks:
  • Accurately align surfaces and curves.
  • Precisely trim and form edges of new surfaces.
  • Create fillets and accompanying flanges in a single operation

The task-based surface modeling tools integrate vector and model space controls to help improve productivity
