ZEISS 50mm f/2.0 overview

  • 1Description

Pairing an all-manual control-set with a digitally-optimized design, the ZEISS Loxia 50mm f/2 Planar T* Lens is a normal prime lens for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless digital cameras. Its manual focus design has been developed in specific regard for use with electronic viewfinders, and also features a manual aperture ring that can be 'de-clicked' for silent operation best-suited for filmmakers. Based on the symmetrical Planar optical concept, this lens is adept at correcting for chromatic aberrations and distortion throughout the aperture range for maintained image consistency and clarity. Additionally, a ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to individual lens elements to further reduce lens flare and ghosting for enhanced image clarity and contrast. Serving as a unique option for the contemporary image-maker, the ZEISS Loxia series of lenses are built for the imaging demands of modern full-frame digital cameras, yet are founded upon conventional manual controls.

Offering a perspective reminiscent to normal eyesight, the 50mm focal length pairs well with the fast f/2 maximum aperture for greater control over focus position and performance in low-light conditions. Furthermore, the handling details of the lens have also been enhanced for maximum feedback and precision, including a long 180° focus throw, clearly engraved scale markings, and a robust, all-metal construction with weather-resistant lens mount gasket. Additionally, the lens is fitted with an electronic interface that conveys all EXIF data to the camera and can also be configured to automatically activate camera-based focusing aids during use.

Prime normal-length lens is designed specifically for full-frame E-mount mirrorless digital cameras. However, this lens can also be used with APS-C-sized E-mount cameras, where it will provide a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 75mm.
Fast f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also enables greater control over focus placement for shallow depth of field and selective focus applications.
Based on the Planar optical concept, the lens features a symmetrical six element-in-four-group design that helps to reduce distortion and chromatic aberrations.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coatings have been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections in order to provide greater image clarity, contrast and color fidelity.
Manual focus design is accentuated by a knurled metal focusing ring, 180° focus ring rotational angle, and engraved depth of field and distance scale markings.
The manual aperture ring has 1/2-stop clicks throughout the f/2 to f/22 aperture range. Using the included De-Click Tool, this ring can be mechanically 'de-clicked' for smooth, silent rotation throughout the aperture range; making it ideal for video applications.
The lens mount is fitted with an electronic interface that conveys all lens EXIF data to the camera and can also be configured to automatically activate the camera's focusing magnification function when turning the focus ring.
An all-metal lens barrel is fitted with a weather-resistant gasket at the lens mount to protect against moisture and dust from reaching the image sensor or rear lens element.

ZEISS 50mm f/2.0 reviews

Loxia 50mm f/2 Planar T* Lens for Sony E Mount is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful Manual Focus Experience for Sony Alpha One of the reasons I decided to switch from my Canon camera system to Sony Alpha (A7II to be exact) was because of this Loxia 50mm lens. It is a terrific lens for anyone looking for a very sharp 50mm. The bokeh is beautiful and the manual focus ring is buttery smooth. The aperture dial provides a very nice click feel and noise. My only gripe is that it is somewhat difficult to secure the lens to the camera considering there isn't much to hold on to when swapping lenses. Other than that, this Loxia 50mm f/2 is an amazing experience to shoot with, and the image quality is superb. Highly recommend for anyone who doesn't care about autofocus!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Is it worth it? In a word, yes. The quality of the Loxia line of lenses by Zeiss doesn't disappoint. I think we are all looking to achieve those pin sharp, color accurate images. I think these lenses check every box for the investment. The build quality is excellent. Sturdy, compact, smooth focusing. The image quality is....well...it's a Zeiss. The difference between the kit lens (which is excellent) that came with my Sony PXW-FS5 and the Loxia is noticeable. The de-click feature is a thoughtful addition for all film makers. These lenses may seem expensive to some but I really think they are a value for the investment. Lenses built to last a lifetime.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great so far. Great lens in a nice small package. Feels very well built and solid. Easy to focus - my first manual focus lens. IQ great so far, but have not had a ton of time to play with it. Real 3 D effect wide open and VERY sharp stopped down a bit. Fits the a7II perfectly. I am not a pro so don't describe it well, but the images feel rich and warm with this lens, especially in lower light. I shoot in Raw but much less post processing needed such as added sharpness or noise reduction. In fact using those with this lens takes away from the original image more often than not. This will be my daily walk around lens. Worth the money if you can cough it up!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the Loxia 50 I have been a semi professional photographer for 50 years. I have always used a 35mm lens more than any other focal length - until now. Now that I have the 50mm Loxia on my A7 camera - it basically stays on it. I have the 35 Loxia also and it is a fantastic lens with Superb optics - however, since I received the 50mm Loxia I tend to use that more. Really sharp, fantastic Bokeh perfect color transmission and something no other lens that I have ever had has - (except my old ZE 50 1.4 Zeiss Planar) - a very special Painterly effect - the photos somehow look like paintings - that is all I can say. With the newer A7 series Sony cameras, manual focus is easy - even for my 70 year old eyes! Get it you will not be diasappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great leans and a joy to use! The build quality is simply outstanding! And it really is made for use on my Sony a7S. It's a perfect match for the a7 series - having just the right balance and weight and very manageable size. The metal and glass construction is really something to behold and the image quality - well - it's quite exceptional throughout the range. Shooting at f2 has posed no problems and the bokeh is quite nice. It's pricey, but you clearly get your money's worth from it. Shooting video with it requires somewhat of a turning curve. The de-clicked aperture is terrific. The lack of stabilization is a challenge. But with practice, and minor rigging, this becomes less of a problem. The manual focus has turned out to be a huge plus for video - and I wasn't sure that would be the case. In all respects - this lens has upped my game.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does everything I wanted! Plus!! Background - I am a Leica M shooter since the M3 (1958). I was looking for a manual lens that came close to the Leica glass I am used to - and I think I found it! I like to control my image and this lens lets me do all that I want, plus very sharp images and good color. I will look very seriously at other Loxia lenses (specifically the 135 if/when it comes out). Only had the lens for a couple of weeks but so far it is performing exactly at I expected! Used on a Sony alpha 7.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific 50mm for A7RII I'm very, very pleased with the Loxia 50 that I got last month! Its rendering is lovely with great microcontrast and 3D, and size, weight, and feel are perfect with my A7RII. I much prefer it to the Sony 55/1.8 that it replaced. It was slightly tight to mount at first, but it became easier after a few times and is no problem now. I liked the 50 so much that I ordered the 21 a few weeks ago; it, too, is a superior lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the Loxia line of Zeiss lenses! First off, this is a manual focus/aperture adjusting lens. When focusing manually, the focus ring is absolutely smooth like 'booth' (butter) and when you turn the aperture ring, you can feel a lick for each f stop. No need to look at where your f stop is set- its about feeling the click. And if you want sharp, this lens will give it to you. I love the bokeh which is smooth and milky. I use this lens on my Sony A7ii and love the fact that these lenses were made for the Sony A7 line. Having the focus peaking feature on my camera really compliments this lens. The build quality is superior to most lenses- all metal and very durable. I also use this lens on my Sony A6000 and it works like a charm. Great portrait lens. My only gripe is the price. BUT you're buying a true Zeiss lens- not a Sony Zeiss. There's a big difference. It's like going from a Honda and upgrading to an Acura yet both are made by the same manufacture. The Loxia line of lenses is like the luxury version of the Zeiss lens. Sony Zeiss are great lenses as well but if you can fork out the money for a true Zeiss, do it. Its an investment that will last you for years to come.
