FUJIFILM XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR Overview

A telephoto zoom designed for use in trying conditions, the FUJIFILM XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR is a weather-sealed lens spanning the popular 76-213mm equivalent focal length range and featuring a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture. Built for FUJIFILM X-mount mirrorless digital cameras, this fast zoom further distinguishes itself with a sophisticated design, highly effective optical image stabilization system, and a Triple Linear Motor AF system for refined focusing performance.

In regards to the optical design, this lens incorporates five extra-low dispersion elements and one Super ED element, which reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color accuracy. Additionally, a Nano-GI coating has also been applied to elements to alter the refractive index between elements, to minimize surface reflections, and to prevent lens flare and ghosting. Additionally a rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when working with selective focus techniques.

Flexible telephoto zoom is designed for APS-C-format Fujifilm X-mount mirrorless cameras and offers a 76-213mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and excels when working in difficult lighting conditions.
Five extra-low dispersion elements and one Super ED element are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce high clarity and color fidelity throughout the zoom range.
Nano-GI (Gradient Index) coating has been applied to lens elements and alters the refractive index between the glass and air in order to better suppress lens flare and ghosting for diagonal incident light.
An HT-EBC (High Transmittance Electron Beam Coating) coating has been applied to the entire surface of each element for controlling ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color accuracy.
A Triple Linear Motor autofocus system delivers smooth, near-silent performance that is especially beneficial to video applications and when working in noise-sensitive areas.
Complemented by an enhanced gyro sensor and unique series of algorithms, the optical stabilization system minimizes the appearance of camera shake to enable sharper imaging when working with longer focal lengths or slower shutter speeds.
The lens body incorporates 20 distinct weather seals to protect against dust and moisture, and to enable worry-free use in inclement conditions and freezing temperatures as low as 14°F.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contribute to a pleasing out-of-focus quality to benefit the use of selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.
A tripod collar is included for well-balanced mounting and shooting when working from a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional XF 1.4x TC WR and XF 2x TC WR teleconverters.

FUJIFILM XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR Reviews

Not as sharp as my 90mm

Not as tack sharp as my 90mm, but far more versatile. I photograph plays in a dark theater and my 90mm f/2 has been excellent at nailing focus in dim situations on moving subjects. I just needed more flexibility in composing shots, especially on the sightly wider end, and the 50-140 f/2.8 fits the bill. It's only slightly less sharp and inaccurate focus-wise, but the majority of my shots are still keepers. With adequate light and stopped down it's incredibly sharp and accurate. I do not have a loose mount like some people claim. Once clicked in to place it is rock solid. I did replace the foot though with something more rigid with built in rails. Price may seem steep but for a constant aperture zoomi think it's well worth the cost. 10/10 would buy again.

Sharper than my Nikon 70-200mm lens

I bought this lens the same time I purchased the Fujifilm X-T5 camera when my D800 died. I highly recommand this lens as I have noticed it's sharper than my nikon lens was and so much lighter to carry. In testing I have found I need to add at least a stop and a half to my exposures for the best results. The X-T5 in my tests have been able to handle a plus 3 exposure with no loss of high ligth details

Stunning images, internal zoom mechanics

A perfect lens for its focal length. The one knock is that the lens hood is UNBELIEVABLY cheap at awful. Barely attaches to the lens with a simple UV light filter. I would pay extra for an aftermarket metal lens hood if one existed.

A Great Lens

I have just got my new fuji 50-140mm f2.8 lens. It's a great lens. Very sharp, a fast aperture, and a very useful focal length. This lens fits nisely between my walk about 16-80mm and my supertelephoto 150-600.

Great lens!

This lens fully lives up to its reputation for great build quality, feel and sharp images. In my much earlier film shooting days, with Nikon cameras, one of my favorite lenses was the Nikkor 80 - 200 2.8, which was a very big and heavy lens but produced great images. In the APS format this Fuji lens is the approximate equivalent of that lens but is much more compact and lighter which I appreciate.

Outstanding Sharpness - Optical Perfection

This lens is amazing. I own the Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 IS II, and this is just as good, cheaper, lighter and with an outstandingly useful tripod foot/collar. I have all the fast fuji glass (90/f2; 60/f2.4; 56/f1.4; 35/f1.4; 23/f1.4; 16/f1.4 and 18/f1.4), so I know what the best images from Fuji kit look like. This is on a par with the best of them (it shouldn't be given that its a zoom). It's a useful portrait and landscape lens. With my Canon 500D close up lens/dioptre, it's a great macro lens and what I really like about it is the clarity without the need for fill flash. This is the equivalent of the Canon, but so much easier and lighter to use - overall greater utility compared to the Canon. Professionally, I've shot weddings with the Canon lens, and halfway through, the weight really cripples your arm. The Fuji 50-140 feels like a featherweight by comparison and gives images that are just as pleasing. The smaller XT series cameras are the perfect match, and really help keep the weight down. On it's own, close focus is nothing special, but sharpness, speed, stabilisation, Weather resistance are stunning characteristics that make this special. Ignore what people say about this being heavy. It is not at all heavy compared to the competition, and balances well on XT bodies. You don't need a grip either as the tripod foot makes holding it very manageable. Build quality is outstanding. I can imagine it will really take what nature and my clumsiness throw at it. B&H service was amazing as always - I had it within a week, and I live in Adelaide, Australia, so full marks for service. Bottom line - buy this lens, you won't regret it. I have just bought the Fuji X-T5, so stabilisation on that body will be amazing, but the lens is also capable of stellar images on older bodies such as the X-T2 and X-T3, which are still competitive devices a hairs breadth beneath the current state-of-the -art.

Overall a fantastic lens - razor sharp - keeps up with primes for sure, great color, fast AF, effective OIS (1/15th shutter at 140mm is possible for me). It handles great. Yup, its size, weight, and cost are all high for the X-system, but this lens is also a money maker and so far I've never regretted taking this lens out whether for portraits, sports, or landscape tourist photos. The images really pop, the color is great, and I think this lens just has its own special look that I don't see with my primes. Portraits at 210mm equivalent are stunning even stopped down to f/4-f/5.6, IMO. Plenty of bokeh if you pay attention to composition. If I had to sell every lens I own but one, I'd strongly consider keeping this one as its versatility and image quality are so high overall. Frankly, a 23mm prime+this lens could cover pretty much everything I usually do at the moment. In terms of cons I don't like the jiggly lens hood, or the weird way it goes on (easy to cross-thread). I also don't love how SLOW the manual focus ring is, even if it has a good feel - I basically never bother trying to manually focusing this lens. The OIS does make a steady whir sound, but I actually kind of like it + it is not loud when shooting in the normal noisy world, just in my coffin-like room. On my 26mp sensor, I think there might be a slight lack of contrast/resolution wide-open, but it tightens up to perfection at about f/3.6 and stays there until around f/11-f/16. This lens will flare pretty dramatically, so use the lens hood unless you want, like I do, to exploit the flare. Sun stars are OK but not stunners. Like others have said, AF seems to slow down/hunt, or miss more in low light. That is generally true of all the Fuji lenses I own, however. But what does that mean? My personal torture test is a toddler in a 10x10 room lit by a single lamp at night - ample light for my eye, but not for the camera (XT3). Even properly exposed with low shutter+high iso no lens I own has yet wowed me in that sort of low light action photography - most fall apart. Personally, I think the 50-140 holds up comparatively better than most lenses I own, partly as a result of being more accurate more often. During sunset at an outdoor wedding, I had no issues nailing focus and AF was still very fast. My hope is that, on a newer body some day, this lens will perform even better in my torture test. I should add that I typically use this as an outdoor lens, as both the focal length and minimum focus distance of about 3 feet make this harder to use in smaller indoor environments/rooms. A legendary Fuji lens.

Does anyone know which way the focus works on the XF lenses? Does it pull closer to the right like canon lenses or is it the opposite like Nikon, and some Sony lenses?
Asked by: Patrick
You rotate the lens' focusing ring to the left to reduce the focus distance, and rotate the focusing ring to the right to increase the focus distance out to infinity. However, you may go into the menu and go to BUTTON/DIAL SETTING > FOCUS RING to reverse the direction of rotation of the focus ring.
