Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

Pairing a duo of camouflage-patterned covers with a telephoto zoom, this Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens with Realtree LensCoat Covers Kit from B&H is the ideal long lens setup for the outdoor or wildlife photographer. The LensCoat covers both feature the Realtree Advantage Max4 HD pattern and are made from snug-fitting neoprene to protect and disguise your lens during use. When paired with the lens of this stature, the components of this kit are ideally suited for use in the outdoors when inconspicuousness is of the highest priority.

The AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR is a versatile lens covering portrait-length to super telephoto perspectives to benefit working with a broad variety of subjects. The optical design incorporates one Super extra-low dispersion element and four extra-low dispersion elements to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range and a Nano Crystal Coating has also been applied to minimize surface reflections and lens flare for increased contrast and color neutrality. A Silent Wave AF Motor contributes to smooth, fast, and precise focusing performance that is further benefitted by an internal focus design, with full-time manual focus override, to promote quicker, more intuitive handling. Additionally, enabling the use of longer shutter speeds, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for enhanced low-light shooting.

  • Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens

The AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens from Nikon is a versatile telephoto zoom lens that is compatible with both FX and DX-sized image sensors. This lens features an extensive zoom range of 80-400mm, with the DX-format equivalent of 120-600mm, encompassing both portrait and long-reaching telephoto focal lengths to suit working with a variety of subjects. Capture portraits with softly blurred backgrounds and get close-up telephoto shots of faraway subjects with or without a tripod.

The lens construction integrates one super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and four ED glass elements to help minimize chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and contribute to higher image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity. The Nano Crystal Coat reduces surface reflections, helping to prevent lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and enhanced light transmission.

Built-in Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake up to the equivalent of four shutter speed steps. A dedicated VR setting for tripods is available for producing the sharpest imagery possible without countering the effects of the image stabilization system.

In addition to regular autofocus and manual focus, two other focusing modes are available: A/M (Auto-Priority Manual Mode) enables an easy transition from autofocus to manual during AF operation, while M/A (autofocus with manual override, MF priority) allows switching from AF to MF with no lag time by just turning the focusing ring. Transitioning between these focusing modes can be done quickly and precisely.

The Silent Wave Motor (SWM) focusing system uses ultrasonic vibrations to provide quick, quiet, smooth and precise auto focusing performance that is ideal for use in video and subject-tracking. Internal focusing maintains an overall compact lens form-factor, enables faster performance, and allows for a closer focusing distance.

    Extensive Telephoto Zoom Focal Range
Covers the broadest focal length range of any NIKKOR super-telephoto zoom lens. At 80mm, it's an ideal medium-telephoto portrait lens and at 400mm it's a powerful super-telephoto lens suited to wildlife and action photography, with or without a tripod. When used on DX-format DSLRs its 35mm focal length equivalence is 120-600mm.
ED and Super ED Glass Elements
One super Extra-low dispersion and four ED glass elements help reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and produce higher image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity.
    SIC and Nano Crystal Coatings
The multilayer Super Integrated Coating is applied to the individual optical elements, as is a Nano Crystal Coat to minimize surface reflections across a wide range of wavelengths and prevent lens flare and ghosting--resulting in greater overall contrast and light transmission.
    Vibration Reduction
Built-in image stabilization counteracts the effects of camera shake, allowing you to shoot at shutter speeds up to four times slower than would otherwise be possible. A dedicated VR setting for tripods gives you the sharpest imagery possible without working against the image stabilization system.
    Focusing Modes
In addition to regular autofocus and manual focus, two other focusing modes are available: A/M (Auto-Priority Manual Mode) enables an easy transition from autofocus to manual during AF operation, with a low possibility of unintentional switching, while M/A (autofocus with manual override, MF priority) allows switching from AF to MF with virtually no lag time by turning the focusing ring--letting you seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the camera's viewfinder. Transitioning between these focusing modes is controlled by a rocker switch on the lens barrel for quick switching and greater precision depending on the subject matter being photographed.
    SWM (Silent Wave Motor)
Utilizes ultrasonic vibrations to provide quick, quiet, smooth and precise auto focusing performance that is ideal for use with video and subject-tracking applications.
    Internal Focusing
Employed in order to maintain an overall compact lens form-factor and to produce faster performance. The lens will not change in size during AF operation, enabling a closer focusing distance without the danger of damaging the lens' front element. Distance information is displayed on an analog scale through a sealed window.
    Focus Limiter Switch
A focus limiter switch on the lens barrel allows you to set a predetermined focus range for faster focusing. The two ranges are Full (5.7' to infinity) and Partial (19.7' to infinity).
    Zoom Lock
A zoom lock switch on the lens barrel keeps the lens set on an established focal length to prevent changes when moving the lens.
    Tripod Collar
A detachable, rotating tripod collar is included for stable use with a tripod or monopod.

    Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 275.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great versatile zoom I purchased this to replace an 80-200 mm f2.8 zoom that my D800 could not adequately autofocus, despite attempts to adjust the calibration software using FoCal. The 80-400 has thus far been an excellent choice for wildlife shots, but has also been fun for closeup/bokeh and landscape shots. The lens produces sharp true-color photos. The VR works particularly well, allowing hand-held shooting at relatively slow shutter speeds (1/160). Thus far (3 months, 300 shots) I've been very happy with the lens. I suspect the problems noted by others about sharpness/ resolution are easily dealt with by adjusting the calibration for the autofocus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth The Price I use this lens for butterfly and dragonfly photography and it performs beyond expectations. I've also used it for landscape (with a tripod) and some wildlife photography and it does a very good job with both. It also works well as a macro with the Canon 77mm close-up lens. Very sharp, very nice bokeh (sorry most-liked negative reviewer)and the VR is outstanding, and I come from the everything shot on a tripod school. Yeah, it's expensive; yeah, it's a little heavy, but it's an 80-400 zoom with multiple ED glass and great VR. What do you expect? Ya got the money? Ya like shooting landscapes, wildlife and flying insects? Don't hesitate...buy this lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Two trips Two Success Stories Bought this lens for a couple of holidays. One to Morocco and one to Yosemite. Performed well in both situations. Morocco was a combitrip of bright skies and dark walks through the souks and medinas. It performed equally well in both scenarios. Walked around all day with it on a D800 with zero tripod availability. Tripod would have been better but was not disappointed with images. The trip to Yosemite had an equally good performance. I own a 200-400 as well but this lens gave me much more maneuverability. This is a heavy lens no question about it but it is a lightweight in comparison to the 2 to 4. I highly recommend moving forward if you are thinking about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EXCELLENT LENS! Received this lens over a week ago and have used it almost every day since then. Got it mainly for wildlife photography and it has worked great. I had previously used a Nikon 1.7 teleconverter with my Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens as recommended by a well known Nikon blogger and there is no comparison, the 80-400mm is by far superior. I didn't get the Kirk bracket because so far I have pretty good luck using an arca mount on the bottom of the Nikon mounting bracket. I did learn to leave the VR on while it is mounted on a tripod especially when it is extended to 400mm. I am very pleased with the results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Happy With This, Good Value I was looking for a safari lens and was going to go with the 200-400/4 zoom, but was not looking forward to the expense and especially the size and weight. There didn't seem to be any alternatives. Then this lens appeared and I bought it. Haven't gone on safari yet, but think it is great so far. I think it is as sharp as my 70-200/2.8 (purely subjective) and is the same size. The autofocus is very fast. Like, too, the 72mm filter size, the same as other lenses I have. My only improvement request would be to not extend the barrel with zoom. Build quality is also very high. People complain about the price compared to the old model, but I think it is a good value.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Lens I bought this to replace my Nikon 200-400mm that I've had for years. I will use this lens mostly hand held for birds in flight, airplane photos and wildlife like whales from a boat. It is much lighter and easier to hand hold then the 200-400, but I do lose a stop or two. So far the lens it very sharp and quick to focus. My only complaint is the tripod ring which seems very flimsy and will wobble when mounted on a tripod. I may upgrade the ring to a Really Right Stuff after market ring which I assume will be more sturdy with less wobble. RRS makes high quality precision equipment, but they are not cheap. All in all I do recommend this lens, especially for hand held action.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replaced my Nikon 300mm f/2.8 Finally decided that my 300mm f/2.8 was just too heavy for me to lug around, so traded it in (at B&H) and bought this updated 80-400mm zoom. I had the prior version of this lens the 'D' version years ago but gave it to my son. I debated simply buying another of the 'D' lens, but I'd read about how much better this 'G' version is so I decided to try it despite the higher price. Great decision: this lens focuses quickly and accurately, and its VR seems to simply freeze the entire world while you take your photo. Very, very happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is one amazing lens from Nikon! Had the older AF lens and traded it at B&H for the Nikon 200-5000 mm F5.6 and was very happy. After a while I had times when I wished it was weather sealed or at least not fearful of using wet hands on it. It is bulky and heave but takes outstanding images even shooting wide open. I decided that the newer AFS Nikkor 80-400 was worth a look. I find it ultra sharp even wide open, Also it is not all plastic like the Nikkor 200-500 mm. and is lighter. So I bought it. Completely pleased with it giving fantastic results on either my D7100 or D4. It is well balanced and the focus is extremely fast. The VR is fantastic. If you're looking for a zoom that will produce great images, is easy to carry and is usable in difficult weather then this is the lens for YOU!
