La Crosse BC1000 overview

  • 1Description

The BC-1000 Alpha Battery Charger Kit from La Crosse Technology includes four AA and four AAA NiMH batteries as well as four C size and four D size battery adapters. It accepts both NiCd and NiMH batteries and can charge AA and AAA sizes simultaneously. All modes default to a 200mA charge, and the charger automatically switches to a trickle charge when charging is complete to ensure maximum capacity. The BC-1000 allows you to choose the charging current individually for each channel.

An LCD screen on the charger shows the percentage of capacity charged for each battery, and overcharge protection helps to protect battery life. The charger has four modes to give you the most out of your batteries. Charge Mode is simply for charging, and displays the voltage and percentage charged. You can choose between 200, 500, 700 or 100mA charging currents. When only channel one and/or channel four is being used, you can select 1500 or 1800 mA. Discharge Mode reduces memory effect by discharging the batteries completely and then fully charging them at your selected mA charging current. Refresh Mode discharges and charges the batteries at your selected charging current for 20 cycles or until the batteries are refreshed to max capacity. Test Mode charges to full capacity, discharges completely to measure capacity, and then recharges to full capacity. Terminal voltage is displayed in all operating modes. If a defective battery is detected, the unit will not charge the battery. An AC wall adapter and a nylon travel bag are included in addition to the batteries and battery adapters.

    La Crosse BC1000 reviews

BC1000 Alpha Power Battery Charger Kit is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very Confusing I have had this for a few weeks and still can't understand how to operate the thing. I accidentally got it into a mode that would discharge all batteries and then recharge them. While it takes a very long time to do this process...sometimes up to 24 hours...I like the fact that it shows when a battery is completely charged. I'm not sure I will ever understand how to use it effectively so until then I will just have to discharge and recharge my batteries each time I use it. It came with four AA batteries but only three could be charged...I hope that's not an indication of the overall unit's quality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent device This product works very well. But I wish it came with a manual to explain the various settings. The product itself could have a few more modifications to increase it's capabilities.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from fine charger that measures V and A A good deal of photographic equipment (speedlights, cameras) as well as portable audio equipment (digital recorders, field mixers) run on AA and AAA batteries. Almost every photographer I know uses high-capacity NiMH rechargeables for such gear, rather than throw-away alkalines. There is a lot of discussion about which brand is most reliable. Uqually important is the question of what kind of charger is the best and which ones indicate whether a battery is good or bad. They simply don't have an endless lifespan. Many NiMH batteries are sold in packages that include a free charger. Some of the chargers work fine (Eneloop) while the Ansmann charger that came with otherwise excellent batteries was useless. A common question, is this AA or AAA battery still able to hold charge is often hard to answer. Simply measuring its voltage when charged, or relying on the battery full indicator light on the charger doesn't guarantee that the battery is able to provide its stated capacity (in mAH, or milli-amps per hour). The LaCrosse Alpha charger kit tries to help answering that question. Besides being able to select different charge currents, from 200mA and up, it also displays the voltage, charge current and capacity (in mAH) of each battery. This helped me for instance detect that one AAA battery I used in a Korg Pandora was bad and caused the set to last only a short time. This is a very useful feature, not present on most other chargers. While not cheap, this is one of the few battery chargers that allows varying charge current and detailed measurements of battery characteristics. It also is multi-voltage which means that it can be used in Europe and other parts of the world with a plug adapter. Oddly, not all battery chargers are multi-voltage. I can't give it five stars because it does not consistently determine whether a battery is fully charged. No harm is done to the battery since it switches to trickle charging when nearly full, but it would be useful if the electronics was able to tell reliably yeah, this one is fully charged rather than trickle charging for quite a while until FULL is displayed. And the user manual (one sheet) could be written a bit clearer so as to be understandable for non-EE majors. Finally, the recondition function is according to experts not really useful for NiMH batteries, even though it was useful for NiCad batteries that had a memory effect. Even so, I recommend this device.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great way to recharge your batteries! Simple to use, but many features to use. I own 3. Well, maybe I should call it two. I used to have two, and loved them. I accidentally put the non-chargeable batteries into the charger, and well, let's just say that is NOT the thing to do. So, I replaced it with another La Crosse charger. As a full-time professional photographer, I go through a lot of batteries. Slow charging with this charger is a failsafe operation (as long as I pay attention to what I'm doing).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little device with brains.... Great little charger, can do just one batt if needed, pairs not required. Best parts for me is it shows you the voltage, right now, of each battery, AND you can tell how much a battery can hold by using the TEST mode which fully charges the battery, then discharges it to dead, while the charger measures how much charge got delivered. So if you think you have a 2500 mAh battery, it will tell you if maybe it is only 2250 mAh actual working charge delivery.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The middle child Like most, I have a collection of chargers, the supermarket ones like Energizer. I also have four Powerex chargers - MH-204FA, MH-204W and two MH-C801D. Have been using this BC1000 for about 6 months now. No prize for guessing which is my favourite charger. I absolutely love the MH-C801D which can charge 8 batteries individually. It is not fussy like MH-C204FA which won't charge aging batteries. This BC1000 is the same, it won't charge older batteries too. Was hoping I could revive some older batteries given the multitude of cycles available in this product. While the digital display is good. You really need to be passionate about charging to make good use of it. I always set charge current to 1000ma for speed. That's why, again, I love the MH-C801D. It just works. I charge at least 16 batteries at a time so the two MH-C801D are great. No idea whether the BC1000 would top up better than the MH-C801D because I frankly never run my batteries flat. Sorry, no idea how good the batteries how good the batteries that come with the charger. To be honest, I didn't really want them and would have preferred to spend all the money on the charger alone. Guess this deal is good for those looking for batteries and charger and don't have to worry if the charger and batteries are compatible with each other. Taking into account that is comes with a set of 4 AAA and 4 AA batteries, the charger is good value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect tool for anyone who relies on their batteries. While I have a Powerex 8-cell smart charger for my day-to-day charging, this unit is my go-to when I need extra capacity or to refresh my rechargeables. Excellent diagnostics and deep cycle rejuvenation, this is like a spa-treatment for your NiCds. You can choose several current levels to charge fast or safe, you can test, you can even recover lost capacity in older or deeply used batteries. A nice perk is the C and D size adapter shells for using AA batteries in larger devices - not an everyday thing but good in a pinch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Versatile intelligent charger. Individual charging of cells to 'Refresh' and to Test enables me to know the condition of my batteries. The BC1000 operates to maximise the capability of each cell. The capacity of each cell enables me to match a pack of 2 or 4 cell for an extended time minimising premature failures of my devices to operate.
