Canon 24mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Recognizable by its truly thin profile, along with an advanced autofocus motor, the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM from Canon is a 38.4mm-equivalent prime designed for APS-C-format DSLRs. Its optical design features one aspherical element, which helps to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations for high sharpness and clarity. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied, which helps to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity in bright lighting conditions. Additionally, benefitting both photo and video applications, an STM stepping AF motor is used to realize quick, accurate, and near-silent autofocus performance.

Short normal-length prime is designed for use with APS-C-format Canon EF-S-mount DSLRs and provides a 38.4mm equivalent focal length.
Modestly bright f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light, affords control over depth of field, and helps to keep the overall physical design compact and lightweight.
Pancake form factor measures less than 1"-thick for an ultra-portable, versatile design.
One aspherical element limits distortion and spherical aberration in order to realize greater sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An STM stepping AF motor realizes smooth, near-silent autofocus that is complemented by a rear focus system, advanced AF algorithms, and a high-speed CPU for fast AF performance. Additionally, full-time manual focus override is also available.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Canon 24mm f/2.8 reviews

EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 420.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The little lens that could I am the proud owner of a Canon 50mm F/1.2 L, an absolute beast. I live and swear by that lens, but I wanted something wider to use on my 80D, something for more general use that could get me places without breaking the bank (a second time). I bought this 24mm without high expectations, but I have to say that I have been continually amazed at what came out of this little pancake of a lens. It's not perfect, vignetting can be quite strong and there is some image distortion, but those are things you can play around with, and the combination of the relatively wide aperture and super short focal length are an explosive cocktail that I just wasn't expecting at purchase. What a little monster.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great for the $$$$$ This is a great little lens if you are aware of its limitations. I bought it for under the net @ high school basketball games (aps-c sensor). I can move around at these games. When I shoot college I still need the versatility of my 16-35 zoom because I am stuck in one place. I shoot a lot more HS than college, so it was worth the investment, especially since I got an already affordable lens at a on sale price. Another thing I like is the close focusing distance. I used it @ Christmas with a flash @ f/5.6 and the images were great. Even sharp @ f/2.8 as my sample image shows. Only downside is not usable on full frame.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very cost effective! I am a purely amateur T3i user with, I have been told by professionals, a good sense of composition. I do not usually take portraits, but instead snap sunsets, landscapes, architecture, flowers, birds, etc. I bought this lens to save both weight and money. Have used it extensively now for three months and am very pleased. NO - no comparison to an L lens, but for casuals like myself? I have no need to spend on aspects that are really pretty irrelevant. The pancake 24mm has consistently produced, although since I do not shoot video I cannot comment on those aspects. My bottom line? I am about to cruise the Baltic and am taking only two lenses - the 24mm and the 40mm pancake.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the pancake size and the field of view The lens is unobtrusive, meaning on a small body (SL1) you could easily put camera and lens in a windbreaker pocket. I love the field of view, it is very similar to my older 35mm view finder cameras and I shot on them often before my first SLR in the mid 80's. It focuses very close which makes it a good lens for shooting small items for documentation, sales, & etc. Shooting with a fixed focal length is how I learned to shoot photographs and after looking through a set of shots taken with a fixed length lens vs a zoom ( I also have a 70-200 F4L, EFS 17-55 2.8 IS, and a EF 28-300L 3.5-5.6) the change in perspective where it is my feet not the lens doing the zooming is a nice change of pace and I find myself looking at and studying those photos longer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Okay, but the 50mm STM is lightening fast I had the 50mm STM and sold it because the 50mm was too narrow for indoor use. You had to be a good distance away from the subject to get a good framing. Overall, the 50mm focused SUPER FAST! and the bokeh was incredible. The 24mm gives a wider field of view and it's easier to get closer to a subject vs. trying get get further away, but it seems so slow to focus. Low light still performance is okay. The image quality is good, but it just takes a long time to get focused. Maybe this will be a good lens for action video. I'm guessing like all lenses, it will be just fine in bright light. I guess the verdict is still out. What could I be doing wrong?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pancake That's Far From Flat Was a little skeptical going in because it was a new lens but at the price decided to take my chances and am so glad I did! The picture quality of this lens is PHENOMENAL!!! The colors are big and bold and don't even get me started on the black and whites!!! I'm currently using it on my 7D Mark II, and in just this short amount of time it's already become one of my favorite lenses. If you're trying to capture that up close and personal, bright and beautiful look, get this lens. You will not be disappointed. Great for head shots!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent walk around lens I picked up this lens when it first came out and brought it to a trip to Asia. Great walk around lens, 24mm on APSC sensor is the ideal focal length. This lens can be used for any purposes. The lens is very tiny, yet build quality is excellent. Excellent optical quality. it produces super sharp image. Auto focus is excellent, quick and accurate. I wish aperture could be larger, as a larger aperture is useful at night, and produce nicer bokeh. Like the 40mm STM, there is no mechanical manual focus control, which will take awhile to get use to

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new everyday lense I was a bit iffy about the fixed lens aspect of the camera, but it really does change the way you think about the composition of your photo. If you are thinking about an upgrade from the kit lens you can not go wrong with this. This also functions as an intro wide angle lens, which is great for street photography. The lower aperture means you get some amazing photos with a sharp focus on your subject and blurred out backgrounds that you just can not get with your kit lens. This is now my primary lens and it allows me to take my camera everywhere b/c of its low profile. Camera in more places means more practice and better photos!! Seriously this is a great lens and everyone should get it!
