Canon 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

Spanning a flexible wide-angle to short telephoto range, the EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM from Canon is a useful zoom for a wide variety of shooting applications. Featuring two aspherical elements and one ultra-low dispersion element, both spherical and chromatic aberrations are well-controlled in order to realize a high degree of sharpness and clarity. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to reduce lens flare and increase contrast and color fidelity when working in bright lighting conditions. Benefitting both photo and video applications, an STM stepping AF motor is used to realize quick and near-silent autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, a four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer system is also featured and minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

Standard wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 38.4-168mm equivalent focal length range.
Two aspherical elements are used to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to maintain sharpness and accurate rendering.
One ultra-low dispersion element reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
An STM stepping AF motor realizes smooth, near-silent autofocus that is complemented by advanced AF algorithms and a high-speed CPU for fast AF performance. Additionally, full-time manual focus override is also available.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

    Canon 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 reviews

EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Walkaround I use this lens on a Canon 60D, and a T5i. The crop sensor focal range of this lens is, for me perfect for walkaround photography. It's sharp from one end to the other, works well in reduced light, has the range to make street photography effortless, and in a recent trip to the Seattle area was the only lens I needed on a hike up Hurricane Hill in Olympic National Park. Vistas, photos of my hiking group, close-ups of deer, marmot, chipmunk, and ptarmigan could all be captured, and when the day's light began to fade it was still bright enough for golden hour photos, and the nighttime ferry ride from Bainbridge back to Seattle. I love this lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't think twice - as good or better than 24-105 L lens This a truly great lens. It is a new 'designed for digital' lens with a real 4 stops of image stabilization. On my 7D crop sensor, it actually outperformed the older 24-105 L f4 non IS lens in every real time comparison shot I threw at it (24 thru 105 mm, close up and far away, day and night)! I use it as my on-camera lens everyday because the zoom range, sharpness, detail contrast, etc are fantastic. Don't hesitate to choose this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely buy this lens This lens is the first full-frame non L series lens I own and I cannot say enough good about this lens. I read reviews where there is lens creep after using it for only a day, but I have not had that experience. I walk around without the lock on and I have not had the lens creep on me. When I am finished shooting for the day, I lock the lens in place. This lens is sharp at all focal lengths. This is my walk-around lens, and I superb results. I would recommend this lens who is looking for an L alternative, but, like me, has a budget. You will not be disappointed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens Dont Sleep On STM Tech just got this lens a week ago havnt got too put it thru its paces yet but STM lens are sharp and fast at still and video focus, also they can be used for sports dont let lenses with F2.8 or faster fool u into spending hella $$$ on those lens STM is the future wait till the 5D4 gets stm and it will be a deadly camera also 25% lighter then L lenses Cons: Not weather sealed or built as well as the L Lenses but there very durable just take care of your stuff

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A worthy lens! After using the 18-135 STM, this lens was most definitely a step up in quality. What you give up in focal range you gain in sharpness, better contrast/color rendition and also much less chromatic aberration (I can still see some but it?s very minimal). The resolution I might add is excellent. I recently had to crop down a photo by almost 50% and it still looked great. No vignetting at all on a crop sensor either unlike the 18-135. It?s an all plastic build with metal mount but it feels pretty solid and doesn?t weigh much at all. I?m using it on a 7D Mk II and focusing has been quick and accurate for the most part (I shoot moving subjects with AI servo). I would definitely stack it up against the ?L? version (which I?ve used) and look forward to using it a lot more. From a value/performance perspective, I?m pretty happy with it and would give it 4.5 stars if I could. By the way, you have to buy the hood separately. For this price it should be included!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lightweight alternative to the L series lens, I use a Canon 5D Mk IV camera. This lens is a lightweight version of the L series lens of the same focal length range. It is also slightly smaller and much quieter when focusing, which the benefit of the STM technology. Compared to the series 1 (not the latest version) 24 -105mm f/4 L series lens, I find it to be equally sharp or better at 35 to 104 mm and sharper in the 24 to 35 mm range. Although the aperture is f/5.6 and not f/4 at the telephoto end, I do not find this to be a disadvantage using current low noise sensor cameras. The big advantage to this lens is that it is smaller, lighter and quieter than the L series lens. However it is not as well built (hence the 1 star reduction from 5 stars) so it will not take the abuse a professional L series lens will take. It also not weather sealed. As a general purpose 'carry around' lens for use in good weather, this lens is superb. If you are a hardened professional, you may want to buy the new Series 2 L series lens which will take the harder use and last longer. For me it has proved a revelation, allowing me to pick up my 5D Mk IV more often and not worry about lugging around those heavy lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent general purpose lens moderate sharpness for full frame handles chromatic aberration reasonably insignificant distortion I am very happy with it I intend to buy 24-105mm F4 L initially, but changed mind after comparing MTF curve and installed STM
