Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Overview

Spanning a flexible wide-angle to short telephoto range, the EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM from Canon is a useful zoom for a wide variety of shooting applications. Featuring two aspherical elements and one ultra-low dispersion element, both spherical and chromatic aberrations are well-controlled in order to realize a high degree of sharpness and clarity. Additionally, a four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer system is also featured and minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

Standard wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 38.4-168mm equivalent focal length range.
Two aspherical elements are used to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to maintain sharpness and accurate rendering.
One ultra-low dispersion element reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
An STM stepping AF motor realizes smooth, near-silent autofocus that is complemented by advanced AF algorithms and a high-speed CPU for fast AF performance. Additionally, full-time manual focus override is also available.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

How does this compare to the Canon EF 18-200mm F/3.5-5.6 IS lens? I am looking for an affordable lens that will work better in low light then the 18-200. But I still need some zoom capability. Thanks!!
Asked by: Melinda
The biggest differences in this lens are the fact that it’s optimized for a full frame sensor and features a stepping motor for quiet autofocus when shooting video. If using this on a crop sensor Canon DSLR, the focal length would be multiplied by 1.6X.

Is it possible to mount the 24-105 stm version on the eos R camera?
Asked by: Arthur
Not directly, no. The Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens uses the Canon EF lens mount, while the Canon EOS R Mirrorless Digital Camera uses the Canon RF lens mount. As such, you would need a lens adapter such as either the basic Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, B&H # CAMAEFRF, or the Canon Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, B&H # CAMAEFRFCR, to connect the Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens onto the lens mount on the Canon EOS R Mirrorless Digital Camera.

Is this a good lens option for the Canon M50 + Speed Booster? I would like to be able to take pictures and film video in somewhat low light but the zoom is important for me.
Asked by: Ryley
Yes it is a high quality lens and being full frame you can use it with a speed booster that is from EF lens to M camera. Depending which speed booster you are using focus will be fast and accurate because of the STM motor this lens has.

I want to perform macro photography, wich Close up lens is compatible with this lens?
Asked by: Kharlla
The affordable way to do close up photography is by using close-up filters. In truth, close-up filter is a misnomer for these do not filter but alter the image. A better name for them is diopter. Diopter advantages are they screw on, do not affect exposure, retain auto focus, are sharp in the center, and they can be stacked. Disadvantages are you lose infinity, there is a lot of chromatic aberration, are softer toward the edges of the frame, they get softer in the center the higher the power of the diopter, and they not work on wide angle lenses. The number on a diopter is the distance (in meters) of the object in focus when the focus ring on the lens is set at infinity. For example, with infinity set on the focus ring and a 1 diopter screwed on, the focus is at 1 meter or 39.37". Now, do know that you can move the focus ring closer and that works too. This is all so you get a starting point. Generally, the strengths available are 1/2, 1, 2, 3, and 4 diopter. The image quality falls the higher the number you go. However, some folks have success with 10x so you might try that. Know that you must have the 24-105mm at 70mm or longer otherwise you will vignette and if you stack them, put the least powerful diopter on first then go up the number otherwise they will not physically join. You will see what I mean if you try. Enjoy getting up close and personal.
