Canon 400mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

Featuring a unique optical design and paired with advanced image stabilization technologies, the Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM is a super telephoto lens characterized by its relative lightweight and compact form factor. Gapless dual-layer diffractive optics are employed within this lens' construction to produce a smaller, lighter 400mm option with enhanced correction for chromatic and spherical aberrations. Aspherical and UD elements are also used to further reduce distortions and a Sub Wavelength Coating contribute to increased clarity and contrast. Complementing the sophisticated optical layout, a four stop-effective Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake and can be dedicated to different styles of shooting. Ideally positioned as a versatile option for sports and wildlife photographers, this lens' high-performance attributes and natural handling render this a viable telephoto option for a variety of applications.

Housed within a weather-resistant barrel, this lens also features fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements for protection against fingerprints and other elements from affecting image quality. Focusing is complemented by the inclusion of AF stop buttons at the front of the lens, as well as full-time manual focus override and Power Focus mode for smooth shifting of focus.

Super telephoto 400mm f/4 lens is compatible with full-frame EF-mount DSLR cameras, as well as APS-C-sized sensors where it will provide a 640mm equivalent focal length.
Gapless dual-layer diffractive optics contribute to a marked reduction in chromatic and spherical aberrations as well as benefit the design of a relatively compact and lightweight lens.
One large diameter ground aspherical element and one ultra-low dispersion UD element minimize aberrations and distortions while also contributing to greater sharpness and clarity.
A Sub Wavelength Coating has been applied to individual elements to control lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Three distinct IS modes are available: standard single-shot mode, a panning-optimized mode, and a mode that only activates the Image Stabilizer during the exposure.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Focus Preset function is available to quickly recall a programmed focusing position.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to three different ranges to suit different applications: 10.8-26.2', 10.8'-infinity, or 26.2'-infinity.
A Power Focus setting is available, and allows you to electronically and smoothly adjust your focus position to suit video recording. This setting utilizes a dedicated ring in front of the main focusing ring and allows you to use one of two different focusing speeds.
A weather-resistant design protects the lens from dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions. Additionally, fluorine coatings have also been applied to the front and rear lens elements for further protection against fingerprints and smudging.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Fixed rotating tripod collar benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Canon 400mm f/4.0 reviews

EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 28.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This lens is fabulous I really hesitated before buying this lens. It's very expensive. Furthermore, I owned the predecessor lens, the 400 DO and, to be honest, I wasn't terribly impressed by it. But, after reading every available review, I took the plunge. It is a delight. It is razor sharp, the IS works extremely well, and it is as light and portable as is advertised. But, best of all, it functions beautifully with Canon's extenders. I've tried it with both the 1.4 Extender III and the 2.0. The results are extremely impressive. My images with the 2.0 extender -- which gives me 800mm with my 5Div body -- are crisp and contrasty. So, what's not to love?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything is Amazing (except the cost) I'm a big fan of the Canon 100-400mm VerII lens and often use this on safaris (I lead small groups). That said, when visiting National Parks like Etosha, Chobe or Kgalagadi, we are limited to the road and sometimes subjects are just not close as you would want. The 1-4 takes the 1.4x VerIIII t/c well, but you are up to f/8. I bought the 400mm DO to save a shot and shoot more at f/4 or f5.6 with t/c. Just back from the Kalahari and amazed at how sharp my images are. I also used with the 2x t/c verIII and these shots are also sharp (however, at 800mm, you do need to take care to support lens to minimize camera shake). I previously owned the 400mm DO ver1 and this lens is much sharper and takes the t/c's much, much better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens My company specializes in high altitude photography we recently replaced our legacy lenses with this masterpiece of optical engineering. If you are hand holding a lens longer than 200mm this is the only lens you will ever need. Its compact DO design is ideal for action photography. With little to no chromatic aberrations, this large aperture lens offers all of the perks of the modern Canon Super Telephoto Lens with none of the draw backs of size and weight. At home in your hand or on a tripod this lens will lens will make your old 400mm f/5.6 nothing more than a paper weight. If you have concerns about its DO design based on a previous Canon product that was received poorly, abandon your doubts, This lens is the real deal and will push you over the top. Able to full resolve a 5.5um pixel pitch it is fast, light, and creates stunning images.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific lens I have owned this lens for over a year and have really enjoyed using it. The lens has produced outstanding results. I also owned the version I of this lens previously. The IS is much improved which makes hand holding more productive. The images produced are tack sharp including use of a 1.4x teleconverter. Image quality is stellar. I use the lens with a 7D mark II body. I have been pleased with the results for both perched birds and birds in flight. The version one is a fine lens but I’m glad I upgraded to the version two especially due to the IS performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon 400 DO II Pros The lightest super-telephoto lenses on the market delivering up to 800mm of stabilized reach with fast AF (pro bodies). Sharp with both EF extender 1.4X III and 2x III with no visible loss in crispness or contrast unlike its predecessor. compact size, it fits in a small backpack. Easy transportation, carry-on compatible with small regional jets. Rapid AF even when attached to the Extender 2X III (EOS-1D X only) Far-focus MFD of 8m at 800mm. Cons Price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Lens I am a professional who has been in the business 40+ years. I've used a lot of different big glass over this time period. I recently bought and used the 400 f4 for a week long assignment on Polar Bears on the North Slope of Alaska. Needed something I could easily manage and hopefully handhold. The conditions were very cold and harsh and we shot a lot of the time from a moving, rocking boat. I used the lens with both film and digital camera bodies. This is an incredible lens both in terms of sharpness, performance-especially in the cold, quickness of focus, clarity, color and contrast. It is light enough to hand hold comfortably which is difficult to do with any other fast big telephoto lens. If you need a big piece of glass and don't need a 2.8 aperture, this is your lens. When using the 1.4x tele-converter the images were also sharp with good color. I have no complaints and totally recommend this lens for its size, weight and sharpness. You won't be disappointed. I captured some great, very detailed, Polar Bear images with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a Hidden Gem! This lens is very sharp and fast and is well worth your extra Expense for it. I shoot lot's of Wildlife ( Birds, four legged stuff, etc. ) I did have the Canon 400mm F/5.6 L lens: It is sharp but slow and without Image Stabilizers. This lens has three different Stabilizer modes......What a different's...Even with a extender EF1.4xII, it's just as fast and sharp...It's a Gem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't Hesitate to Own this Fine Lens I own the 400 f/4 DO II and the superlative 500 f/4 L IS II, both purchased from B&H. I just returned (Feb.,2015) from a two week birding trip along the Louisiana and Texas gulf coast. My preference was to have the 7DII paired with the 400 f/4 DO II and the 5DIII paired with the 500 f/4 II. I successfuly used a 1.4 and a 2.0 Extender III with both setups. The 400 DO II acquires focus as well as the 500 II. Both are very quick. The build quality of the 400 DO lens is on a par with my 500 II. I have thousands of images to compare and I can say with complete confidence and all honesty the 400 DO II image quality is equal to the 500 II. I can hear the naysayers now but folks I have nothing to gain by reporting my findings. Heck, I spent the extra money to have the 500 f/4 L IS II and no regrets. IMO Canon DO optics and coatings for the 400 DO II set a new standard in the super telephoto world for light weight with 'L' glass quality. The 7DII and 400 DO II with a 1.4 extender weigh in at about 7.13 lb. and 896mm of reach. There simply is not another kit available to match the image quality along with the portability and reach of this Canon combination. Don't hesitate to own this fine lens. Just an aside IMO the 7DII body is a must have for birding or sports.
