Canon Eh-S Overview

Optimized for wide-aperture lenses, specifically in the f/1.8 - 2.8 range, this Eh-S Super Precision Matte Focusing Screen from Canon is designed to obtain sharp points of focus with their EOS 7D Mark II DSLR Camera. It's especially well-suited to situations in which you're manually focusing in dim light with fast lenses, and its fine microlens structure allows for high performance in various scenes.

Areas that are slightly out of focus will appear more so, making it easier to tell when focus is right-on. With lenses that have a maximum aperture smaller than f/2.8, a Super Precision Matte screen will appear dark and grainy. Like all Canon focusing screens, this one is compatible with EOS autofocus systems.

The screen serves as a replacement for the standard screen originally installed. Use the supplied installation tool to place it into the retaining frame inside the camera. Focusing screens are extremely delicate and should be handled with great care. Always use the special installation tool provided. Never touch the screen with your fingers or hold it in your hand, and always keep it away from dirty or abrasive surfaces, as dirt and smudges will be difficult to remove and scratches will be permanent. Dust can be removed with a manual air blower.

It was on the recommendation of my friend Dan that my focus screen needed replacing. I was glad to hear that the smudges I saw on my viewfinder were on the screen and would be a simple fix. I am happy with his recommendation.

Useful for Manual Focusing

This is a high-quality product by Canon that allows the user to focus manually with much more accuracy than the standard screen included with the 7D Mark II. It's manufactured in Japan and comes with all the necessary instruments to change the factory focusing screen, a process that takes no more than two minutes. If you have high quality fast glass, this is an obligatory extra for your kit. By fast I mean at least F2.8. The best way for me to explain the difference between the matte screen and the standard screen is that with the matte screen every little movement of the manual focus ring on your lens will be very noticeable in the viewfinder. This is great. If feels very intuitive, like on a traditional 35mm film camera. Recommended.

question

Do I need to change when using a kit lens, for example? Does it remove the auto focus feature? Or, once change I'll only need to change again if it gets broke?
Asked by: Cassio M.
This screen is for fast lenses so it would be best to change it when using a slow lens (kit lens). I have used a kit lens with this screen in a 7DII and it works but the view finder is darker, in a room with little it was very dark.

question

how dim would it be with a F/4 lens?
Asked by: Oscar J.
I find it darkens considerably at F4. I also love it on 2.8 and 1.8 lenses. I have the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM and find outdoors I notice the the dimness of the Eh-S less than I do indoors shooting architecture. This could be my eyes, I am very sensitive to light and darkness.

question

Will this fit on the original 7D, (Mark I) ?
Asked by: stephen
NO. the older version of the 7D takes a different screen. This new one has plastic nubs on the sides that don't fit in the older frame. The new nubs system seems better, more surface to grip with the special plastic tweezers.
