Samsung NX1 Overview

  • 1Description

The native 4K Samsung NX1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm f/2-2.8 S ED OIS Lens combines a camera capable of professional-grade video and photo output along with a sharp, bright lens suitable for wide-angle photos as well as portraiture. The NX1 is built around a 28.2MP BSI APS-C CMOS sensor that not only produces high-resolution images, but also 4K video at 24 fps, UHD at 30 fps, and full 1080p HD video at up to 60 fps. High Efficiency Video Coding (H.265) is applied so that even 4K and UHD video files remain easy to edit and share. A sharp, 3.0" HD 1036k-dot touchscreen monitor and 205 phase-detection AF points benefit both cinematographers and still photographers, and for instances where it is preferable to use the camera's viewfinder instead, a sharp, 2360k-dot XGA OLED electronic viewfinder is also built-in.

Built for fast shooting conditions, the NX1 provides a 15 fps burst with autofocus plus a 1/8000th second maximum shutter speed. For use in low-light, the ISO range can be expanded from 100 to 51,200. A full complement of shooting modes are available, including Aperture Priority, Auto, Manual, Program, and Shutter Priority, plus "smart" modes such as Action Freeze, Beauty Face, Fireworks, Landscape, Multi-Exposure, Night, Panorama, Rich Tone (HDR), Sunset, and Waterfall. Images can be saved as RAW files or JPEGs of various file sizes that correspond to user-selectable image ratios of 3:2, 16:9, or 1:1 and according to the user's desired color editing space of Adobe RGB or sRGB.

Saving and outputting large video and image files are accommodated by the camera's ability to utilize UHS-I or UHS-II SD-type memory cards, and a USB 3.0 port. Additionally, a micro HDMI connector allows video to be recoded directly to an external recording device with a 4:2:2 (8-bit) output signal. The NX1 also takes advantage of wireless technology as well. Built-in Near Field Communication (NFC) capability allows individual images to be wirelessly transferred from the camera to a smartphone or tablet. Additionally, 802.11b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi capability coupled with Bluetooth 3.0 technology allows for fast and cordless transfer of files while providing constant and accurate GPS data when the NX1 is paired with smartphone.

Designed to fit securely in hand, the NX1 is also water and dust resistant with a magnesium-alloy internal frame for added durability.

The camera is compatible with Samsung NX-mount lenses and included in this kit is the Samsung 16-50mm f/2-2.8 S ED OIS Lens. A Premium "S" Series lens, it offers a 35mm-eqivalent range of 24.6-77mm, and provides an angle of view that can be used for wide-angle shots to portraits. It has a fast f/2.0 - 2.8 maximum aperture range that enables low-light shooting and shallow depth of field, while a 9-blade circular aperture diaphragm creates pleasing blur in out-of-focus regions. The lens can be stopped down to f/22 and features optical image stabilization.

Also included is an extra Samsung ED-BP1900 Rechargeable Battery Pack for the NX1, an ED-BC4NX03 Charger, and the ED-VGNX01 Vertical Grip. The vertical grip can accommodate two ED-BP1900 batteries and provides additional comfort when holding the NX1 camera in portrait mode.

28.2MP BSI APS-C CMOS Sensor
A large 28.2MP BSI APS-C CMOS Sensor works to produce high-resolution digital imagery while maintaining good shadow details and enhancing low-light performance throughout the camera's 100 to 51,200 ISO range.
4K Recording at 24 fps, UHD Recording at 30 fps and 1080p Full HD Recording at up to 60 fps.
As a 4K-capable camera, the NX1 is among the most compact cameras in its class. Aside from 4K, video may be recorded in Ultra-HD as well as in full HD. To help ensure that even the highest resolution video files are easy work with, the NX1 accommodates UHS-I or UHS-II memory cards and employs HEVC (H.265) compression. Additionally, video may be recorded directly to an external device with a 4:2:2 (8-bit) output signal.
Hybrid Autofocus System
The Advanced Hybrid Autofocus system utilizes 205 phase and 209 contrast-detection autofocus points to acquire focus quickly and precisely. The phase-detection method is ideal for gaining focus in an expedited manner while contrast-detection is employed to fine-tune the focus for critical applications. When combined, focusing is sharp and leads to making photos in a natural and intuitive manner.
High-Speed Performance
A 15 fps burst rate with continuous autofocus and a 1/8000 sec top shutter speed keeps even the fastest action sharp. If needed, high shutter speeds are also possible in low light with an ISO range of 100 to 51,200.
Smart Shooting Modes
A full menu of "smart" modes is available to accommodate most imaging scenarios. They include: Action Freeze, Beauty Face, Fireworks, Landscape, Light Trace, Multi-Exposure, Night, Panorama (Live), Rich Tone (HDR), Samsung Auto Shutter, Silhouette, Sunset, and Waterfall. For more direct control over the output, Aperture Priority, Auto, Manual, Program, and Shutter Priority modes can also be selected.
Clear Viewing Options
Whether filming video or taking still photos, a tiltable 3.0" HD 1036k-dot touchscreen monitor is provided for subject framing, menu selection, and image review. When use of a viewfinder is preferred, a 2360k-dot XGA OLED electronic viewfinder is available that turns on when brought up to one's eye.
Easy Connectivity
Files saved on a memory card within the NX1 can be downloaded off the camera via its speedy USB 3.0 connection. When wirelessly accessing images stored to the camera is preferred, NFC capability allows individual files to be transferred to a smartphone or tablet with one tap. Large groups of images may be transferred using 802.11b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 3.0 technology can be used to easily activate the Wi-Fi while allowing a connected phone to constantly feed accurate GPS data to the camera for tagging to photos and videos in real-time.
Samsung 16-50mm f/2-2.8 S ED OIS Lens
The included zoom lens provides a versatile 24.6-77mm 35-mm focal length range that can be used for wide-angle shots to portraiture. A fast f/2.0 - 2.8 maximum aperture range make low-light shooting and shallow depth of field possible in a wide variety of instances, while an aperture diaphragm featuring 9-blades smoothly renders out-of-focus regions within an image. Inside the lens are 18 elements in 12 groups, including 3 aspherical, 2 ED (extra-low dispersion) and 2 XHR (eXtreme High Refractive) elements for excellent clarity, detail, and sharpness. Built-in optical image stabilization counteracts motion blur for sharper images over the life of the lens, plus an Ultra-Precise Stepping Motor (UPSM) improves upon the conventional Stepping Motor (SM), offering three times the precision in its ability to focus on subjects. As an added bonus, the lens is dust and splash-proof.

    Samsung NX1 Reviews

Samsung NX1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm f/2-2.8 S ED OIS Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from great mirrorless camera Recently took the NX1 on a journey to Africa. The camera battery life is great (with image stabilization on) allowing us to shoot several hundred 28mP shots and a half dozen 4k videos per Safari leg. Screen worked well for most activities - I was a bit disappointed in high sunlight darker images were not refined enough to determine if the shot actually came out (e.g. Photographing a Leopard in a tree, where the background was very bright). Little was seen on the screen until re reviewed the photos that evening.15fps can in handy when we we shooting action shots (eagle flying over head). All in all a great camera. Now when is the telephoto lens coming?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Image Quality I purchased this camera primarily for video, and there is nothing below and very few above 10K which can touch it. Color and sharpness straight out of the camera are incredible. Samsung lenses are fast, sharp and quiet in use. Low light needs some improvement, but with a cheap adapter and cheap, fast manual lenses are at your disposal. I am truly enjoying shooting with this camera. The wireless capability allows me to grab frames from video, and post them to social media in nearly real time, giving me a huge advantage over any competitor. On board sound is good as well. Highly recommended!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Camera! :-) Brought this kit last month that came with rode mic and SD Card, talk about bonus! No previous experience on camera usage. Very easy to use, learning lots from it. Definitely enjoying Samsung continuing to listen to us Samsung users on reported issues. Some have been resolved in recent firmware updates since its' launch in Nov 14. 3x firmware updates so far..:-) I've heard Samsung will be doing this on monthly basis, another bonus! My main reason for purchase is take with me for travelling hopefully late next year. I know this camera won't disappoint.. Yes it is the first generation of its' kind, but I have no regrets with purchasing this .. :-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Outstanding Build I heard the build quality was great, but it is quite a bit better than great. Extremely solid feel, very smooth navigation, layout is so very comfortable (tho I concede personal preference), intuitive menus, cell phone level touchscreen responsiveness... Just impressive. Second most impressive feature? Optical Image Stabilization with the S Lens. In a dark room at 11pm, with only a 30 TV for light, I was laying in bed wondered how well the NX1 could snap a picture. I started with (I think) ISO 12,800 and Shutter 'round 1/30 and the result was disappointing. The noise was understandably overwhelming. Then, on a whim, put it at ISO 400 and Shutter of 1'... it was stunningly bright and sharp. I am not known for steady hands and on other cameras never get below 1/30 due to the inevitable shake, even with other image stabilizers. I had audible wows in bed when I saw the result of this OIS at work. Other things of note... The S Lens is surprisingly hefty, especially in comparison to the svelte NX1 body. The WiFi features were a moderate plus in considering the purchase of the NX1; however, with iOS devices the features are more letdowns. Not saying it doesn't work, but it doesn't work as smoothly as the expected. It was clumsy in more ways than one. Haven't tried on Android devices yet, so can't comment on its appeal to the wider audience. Audio input/output awfully close together... It is an inconvenience. Autofocus was impressive in speed and accuracy in perfect conditions. Low-light was disappointing... but I am just confirming every other review out there. A personal contribution I haven't seen however, is that the low-light AF performance is a little bit of a mystery. Sometimes it works well enough on low contrast, low light... but then hunt more on things of slightly more contrast and slightly better light. I'm still figuring this one out. Will be testing Zolly-ing with the facial detection AF in 4K soon... am optimistic. The zoom on the S lens is smooth enough to make this work, but the AF is the only uncertainty. 15fps... a little overrated in my opinion, especially in Sports. The EVF tracking is too tough to reconcile when following a subject shooting that fast. You'll miss your intended shot anyway. I dial it quite a bit back. Speaking of EVF, (this is personal preference) but I don't think I want to go back to Optical View Finders with a wealth of data and capability of an EVF, especially one with imperceptible lag. I actually shouldn't say imperceptible, because you know it's there and can kind of tell... but the pros are much greater than the cons. Goodbye (D)SLRs... Overall, I am fantastically pleased with the purchase so far!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An excellent camera system. I love it. I've had many dozens of digicams over 15 years and in the last year-plus have owned a Canon 6D, Sony a7R, Sony a99, this NX1, a Canon 5D3, and an M43-system Olympus EM5-II. Sold the first three and used the last three over the last several months to determine which to keep. The NX1 wins in ergonomics, ease of handling, and image quality. I use it mostly for landscapes and it does not disappoint. What's not to love?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Camera for the money and prosumer. I am a professional photographer and videographer for small business marketing. This was my entry camera. I am giving this Camera 4 stars not because it is a perfect camera for a pro, but it is not priced like a pro camera. So I have trouble down grading something that for what it is is awesome. I have captured incredible video with it. Awesome photography in low light and all conditions. The lens is great and I am able to take photos that need very little editing and that is awesome for. If I had to do it again I would get the Canon 5d Mark iii because of the Canon platform through their pro line up. That is where this camera loses the last star. There is no where to go up from here in this line. If you are a new pro and needing bang for your buck in all your decisions that is the problem with this platform and why I wouldn't recommend it. The other major reason is having to convert all the video which bogs down your computer and adds a ton of time to a work flow. The 4k video is great but I will only use it upon specific request because everything takes so much longer. The camera itself is very easy to use and to get used to. The touch screen is intuitive you can figure this setup out without looking at a book. The lens interface is great for this setup and I enjoyed it. The on camera flash is garbage with this lens because it will always cast a shadow on your pictures making them mostly unusable unless you like to only shoot for the top half of each shot. I really don't like the rolling shutter but again I just feel like you get what you pay for and if you aren't a pro you won't care. If you are getting paid you will care, at least I do. Focusing is good in many situations but there have been times where it must be done manual or you can't depend on it to get it right. Its good but you can't get some moments back and for those you will wish you had more. This is a great camera to test you and push you however and you can pull some amazing out of it. I am being hard on this review only for full disclosure and not because I don't like the camera. I just think if you are about to spend almost $3k you should spend just a little more, forget about 4k, and know that you can make incredible video on 1080p with a platform that will take you into the future. I'm not writing this for seasoned pro's with all the hottest equipment already. This camera would only be a novelty and a fun challenge. For photography, I have gotten great images with it. Stunning. Landscapes, products, food, people, moments, and it can completely justify why people need a pro. It makes great photos. Let me be clear, for the money this is an incredible camera, I just wouldn't recommend it for a serious pro. I know there are guys out there using them with only good things to say and they are right. I do love the camera for what it is and does. It's what it doesn't do from a future stand point that make it undesirable for me. My advice is get a platform you can really grow with if you are taking money for your work and expect to get better equipment as your income increases.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent mirrorless I bought this camera as soon as it was available on market and very happy with it. I am a Canon 5D MK III owner but it was heavy to use it out of the studio. So I was already looking for a second body which has studio capabilities as well as street and video. I am glad I have made the right choice. Thank you Samsung for the new tech and forcing other manufacturers.
