Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO Overview

Offering long reach with an advanced feature-set and optical design, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO from Olympus is a versatile 80-300mm equivalent telephoto zoom for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. As part of the PRO series of advanced lenses, this zoom distinguishes itself with a bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture for consistent illumination throughout the zoom range to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. Its optical design makes use of a series of aspherical and low dispersion glass elements to suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations for notable sharpness and clarity, and a ZERO coating is also used to reduce flare and ghosting for high contrast, color-accurate imaging.

Complementing the optics, a dual VCM autofocus system offers fast and near-silent focusing performance to suit both stills and movie recording applications. A manual focus clutch permits quick switching between AF and MF, and a programmable L-Fn button avails lens-based control over shooting settings. The lens is also weather-sealed for working in trying conditions, and a removable rotating tripod collar is included for improved balance and support when working atop a tripod or monopod.

Telephoto zoom is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides an 80-300mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture suits working in a variety of lighting conditions throughout the zoom range.
One aspherical ED (extra-low dispersion) element, two aspherical elements, one Super ED element, three ED elements, and one HD element are featured within the optical design to minimize both spherical and chromatic aberrations, distortion, and color fringing throughout the zoom range while also contributing to overall image sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy.
A ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
A Dual VCM (voice coil motor) system is used for quick and near-silent autofocus performance. By separating the focusing mechanism into two groups controlled by separate linear AF motors, focus speeds are faster and the friction-free movement is notably quieter to benefit video recording.
Manual focus clutch lets you quickly pull the focusing ring into place for direct, intuitive focus control.
Programmable L-Fn (lens function) button for easily accessible settings adjustment.
Dust-, freeze-, and splash-proof design uses 11 separate seals to ensure the lens's performance in inclement and harsh conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm produces a smooth bokeh quality.
Removable rotating tripod collar offers a stable platform for working with this lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Included lens hood collapses back onto the lens for a more compact profile when stored.
Compatible with the optional M.Zuiko Digital MC-14 1.4x Teleconverter to further extend the reach to a 112-420mm equivalent focal length range.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO Reviews

Must have lens for any Olympus shooter especially the OM-1

Razor sharp. Excellent range and build quality. Function button on the lens. Only thing missing is in-lens stabilization, but with the right camera body this is not an issue. It is a dream lens with the new OM-1 camera. I really like the manual focus ring, slide it back for instant manual focus, and slide forward to return AF. Lens hood is one of the best in the industry. More manufacturers should implement this design. Size and weight allow for comfortable walk-around option or use the tripod collar. Price is excellent for an F2.8 80-300mm equivalent to 35mm. Can't recommend this lens enough.

Glad I got it

I use this for landscapes and wildlife. Love the reach, the image quality and the constant 2.8. Not as heavy as I feared, which is a good thing! The only reason I knocked it down a star is the lens hood. A great idea that it conveniently collapses over the lens, but... it is fragile! The first day out it came apart in three pieces! I managed to put it back together and it's still working but I don't trust it. I may wind up getting a more conventional hood. I would still recommend this lens.

Super fast focus

This is a rather remarkable 80-300 2.8 equivalent. It's totally weatherproof and it focuses faster than you can imagine. Tack sharp, this and the 300 2.8 I think are their best lenses. Actually all the pro lenses are great, but, this is my favorite in terms of range and sharpness.

Great lens

Bought this lens for environmental wildlife shots & for bird photography when the birds are close. (My usual lens is a 300) Have used it for beautiful flowing river shots w/OMD1MKIII - very happy w/lens.

f/2.8 is not ... the real max aperture for the lens.

I currently own a Canon RF 70-200 f/2.8, but going with Olympus to look for something portable easy and light weight. The OM-D E-M5 III and M.Zuiko ED 40-150 f/2.8 Pro seem to be good. Solid build, compact, easy portable, fast focus... But I am disappointed a little bit when taking portrait pictures to compare with the Canon RF I own. No way the Olympus bokeh can compare with Canon RF bokeh. I read the EXIF data of the jpeg pictures I took from the Olympus, and found out the max aperture is 3, not 2.8. Attached hereto are two pictures, one from Canon RF, one from Olympus Pro.

Good smaller telephoto

After limited use I am very favorably impressed by this lens. I have the 12-40 and 300 mm lenses, and this lens provides a valuable area of coverage. It is sharp, fast and has proven good in limited use in cold weather for capturing some mountain vista images. The one weak spot appears to be the lens hood, as others have mentioned.

Great addition to my Lenses

Always wanted this lens and finally got it, I have the 300 lens which I love but having the range of the 40-150 is nice. Was smaller then I thought it would be so that is a plus. Like the lens hood but just took a few minutes to figure it out.

Professional Quality in a Useful Zoom Range

By Dom

The effective zoom range in 35mm full frame format is 80-300mmm. Plus, this is a Pro lens so the maximum f:stop stays at F:2.8. The size and build quality is also professional grade. I especially like that the lens comes with a tripod/monopod mount since I use a monopod when I shoot motorsports. Image sharpness is excellent across the zoom range and f:stops - I have been using this lens for the better part of a year and have sold lots of images to international magazines with no issues regarding sharpness, color accuracy, and dynamic range. I appreciate the built-in lens hood but as others have mentioned, it has a design fragility. I knocked mine off at a major auto race but was able to click it back on without permanent damage - I'm extra careful now but it is a concern. The lens accepts the hard to get 1.4X and 2.0X extenders with no noticeable loss in image quality (although I have not done an in depth test). Overall, the smaller size of the lens due to the system's Micro 4/3 format makes this effective 300mm F:2.8 lens portable so it's always in my travel bags. Since the Pro Olympus system has excellent sealing against moisture, I feel comfortable shooting auto races in the exciting atmosphere of a racing in the rain event. Overall, given the price, size, image quality, and zoom range I think this is a must have for Olympus System sports and wildlife photographers. Add one of the tele converters for added reach and you have a compact super zoom. Recommended ...
