Olympus MC-14 1.4x Teleconverter Reviews

Image is degraded, but you get more MP on the target

I use the MC-14 (rarely) in combination with the Olympus 300 F4. If the light is very good, this can be a very useful combination for perched birds. However, in most conditions, there is noticeable image degradation and slower AF speed. I don't recommend this combo for BIF. While the image quality with the TC appears no better than a straight 300 f4 image cropped, the teleconverter will get more megapixels on the target allowing for a larger viewable photo size.

WIth my Olympus 300mm f/4 Pro, there is no loss in observed AF accuracy or sharpness. It never comes off my camera! I do often use the EE-1 Red Dot to help me find my bird subjects!

Sharp images

Coupled with the 40-150mm f2.8 Pro lens - this extender is sharp at f5.6. At f4 it's very good but not optimal. Coupled with the 300mm f4 Pro lens - this extender is tack sharp and resolves fantastic detail wide open at f5.6. Olympus lenses are very good. I remember my Canon FD L glass was never pin sharp wide open and extenders were often disappointing. Olympus seems to have fantastic quality products.

Stopping down helps sharpness

This is a nice addition to the 40-150mm f2.8. The MC-14 used wide open at f4 on this lens - the images are sharp but there is sometimes a halo effect on the edge of hightlights. When stopped down to f5.6, this combo resolves noticably more detail and without the highlight halo effect. Attached is a photo at f4 showing the halo effect.

Adjust your expectations

Given my disappointment I was pleased to see a recent video by an O ambassador who showed the limits of using this item on Olympus 100-400 and 300. I thought I had a bad copy but I guess it's just the limits of what a TC can do. I no longer use my teleconverter because, IQ wise, it's not worth carrying or taking the time to put on an otherwise fine lens. If image quality doesn't matter to you you'll probably like the extra range (although you might as well use a digital zoom instead).

Olympus Extenders Rock

I use both of these extenders all the time. They are the sharpest Extenders I have used. All of my images are done with either the 1.4 or the 2X. The image I have uploaded was taken with the M1X, 300mm F-4 Pro Lens and the MC-14 (1.4 Extender). The flying Black Crowned Night Heron was taken with the 2X at 1202mm hand held.

Unfortunately not. For the Panasonic lens you would need to use the Panasonic Teleconverters. Panasonic currently have the DMW-TC20 2x Teleconverter linked here that will work with that lens. https://bhpho.to/30fRxyf
