Sleek Wide-Angle Versatility
A compact and weather-resistant option, the Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens from Sony will satisfy nearly all the wide-angle needs of full-frame E-mount shooters. The flexible wide zoom is characterized by a constant f/4 maximum aperture, making this an ideal lens for street, landscapes, cityscapes, and other subjects requiring a broad field of view and the inherent versatility of a zoom.
ZEISS Optical Design
  • Based on the ZEISS Tessar optical concept, this lens uses a design with 12 elements in ten groups that helps ensure a smaller overall lens size along with reduced flaring, distortion, and chromatic aberrations.
  • Constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also lends greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field techniques.
  • Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
  • ZEISS T* anti-reflective coatings have been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections in order to provide greater image clarity, contrast, and color fidelity.
  • Three extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • Five aspherical elements, including one large-diameter Advanced Aspherical (AA) element, are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
Image Stabilization, AF, and Handling
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
  • A linear autofocus motor and internal focus design provide quick and precise autofocus performance and enables accurate and silent focusing while recording videos.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.

Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS Reviews

Not perfect but IQ is key

I've shot many thousands of photos with this lens, and the key point, as one reviewer stated, is that the color rendition, tonality and 3d modeling is very good. It's much better than the Tamron 17-28 (which I've also used a lot) in this regard, which produces very clean, flat, boring images with strange color. This lens isn't perfect. Better if the barrel didn't extend and if it was sharper at 35, but at f4 I think it's the best choice, and other than the G master the only other option at 2.8 or f4 that doesn't have issues. The PZ has terrible distortion at 16, the 17-28 images are very off-putting (I also have the 28-75 and it's much different and better), and the Sigma has terrible vignetting.

This is my first wide lens. I bought it for real estate photography. The image is crisp and clear. Pricing-wise, I'm really satisfied with the result.

Don’t let the f/4 stop you.

Don’t let the f/4 stop you from getting this lens for this is a very good and sharp lens. If you are considering an ultra wide angle lens most likely you’re planning to shoot landscape anyways where you would shoot with a higher aperture.

Excellent lens. I'm very satisfied with the optics, build quality and size/weight. It was between this and the 12-24 as well as the 16-35 /2.8. But for the price, this is perfect. (For wide angle /4 is enough and it makes it much lighter. 12mm is extreme and has limited use. With 35mm on this lens, I can mount it as a walk around and take decent portraits and landscape. The 12-24 still ends very wide so I need 2 lenses to walkaround. Bottom line for me: this is the winner.

I enjoy using the Sony Vario-Tessar lens on my A6000 body camera. It take clear pictures and not too heavy. I highly recommend for beginner photographers.

I do primarily photo, and as I start to get into video, I am finding myself turning to this lens as my go to. I do landscape photography here and there, but where this lense has been great is to start recording myself. I am finding that the length, the size and how compact it is, has been a great go to lens for me.

Using my new a7 R iii this lens is super sharp. I needed to go to maximum magnification in photoshop to remove some debris from a model's skin in an outdoor shoot at a waterfall. I was amazed at how the image held focus up to point of pixelization. The image stays sharp to the edges.

question

Does this lens have manual focus available? I am wondering that If I use ND filter, how it still be able to auto focus? Please help and Thank you!
Asked by: Anonymous
There is no physical manual/autofocus button on the lens, so one has to do this via the camera menu settings ... Works well by the way. Have not tried it with a ND filter yet. With ND filters I usually focus without the filter, put it on manual and then take the picture with the filter attached ... with a variable ND filter it is even easier ... Just turn the adjustment ring from no ND to the desired amount.

Does the OSS work well with IBIS for video?

Does the OSS work well with IBIS for video?
Asked by: Mark
Yes the stabilization works well if you are standing still but if you’re walking the rolling shutter on the Sony’s are so bad that nothings going to save it. I bought this lens because I intended on using it to vlog with but what I found is that well the rolling shutter with the sensor that’s so bad that I just ended up not using it. I ended up vLogging with my GoPro or my Osmo Action most of the time. It does work well though if you’re standing still and you’re just holding your camera out in front of you however if you were moving it will help but not as much as you would probably like it too. I am interested in seeing how this lens performs with the A7SIII because I have been using it with the A7R3 and they have different sensors and different rolling shutter and A7SIII has better stabilization.
