Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports Overview

Versatile with its reach, the Canon EF-mount 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM from Sigma is a Sports-series lens offering a flexible telephoto zoom range, along with an advanced optical and physical design. A series of low dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range and contribute to greater clarity and color accuracy. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been employed to control ghosting and flare for improved contrast when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the optics is a Hyper Sonic Motor that provides especially fast and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override. An Optical Stabilizer also works to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, a rotating tripod collar is integrated into the lens's design to suit working atop a tripod or monopod.

As part of the Sports line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to offer excellent optical performance, speed, and other customizable features that make it an ideal choice for wildlife, sports, action, and other fast-moving subjects.
Telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 240-960mm equivalent focal length range.
Two F Low Dispersion (FLD) and three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements are featured in the optical design and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), along with a rear focus system, realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Dust- and splash-resistant design suits this lens's use in inclement weather conditions and a water- and oil-repellent coating has also been applied to the front and rear elements to aid in cleaning.
Constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. Additionally, a brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity.
Zoom lock switch can be activated at any focal length to prevent accidental and unwanted zoom adjustment.
A fixed, rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.
Compatible with optional Sigma TC-1401 1.4x and TC-2001 2x teleconverters.

Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports Reviews

Loving it so far

I have had the Sigma 150-600mm Sport for about 2 weeks. I have only gotten to shoot with it 2 days and did a couple shots of the moon at night. I like to shoot birds in flight and a lot of water foul. The lens seems to focus fast and smooth. I was able to track and follow birds easily keeping them in focus in servo mode. I even got a few good shots of Belted Kigngfishers in flight, they are little speed demons. The last day out a Bald Eagle showed up to finish the day and I was able to get some decent shots of him. The shots I did of the moon were nice and crispy. The lens is very heavy, I almost always shoot with a Gimbal. I have not tried shooting any hand held shots. I did add the extender the first day out for a few shots. I was able to focus and track on a vulture circling at about 100 yards. I don't think I would ever use the extender for birds in flight but I think it would do well for large wildlife. So far I am very happy with the lens and I am looking forward to shooting with it some more in the near future.

I have only used it once but the few photos I have gotten are amazing! I am very satisfied with this lens. It is a bit heavy for hand holding but put it on tripod with a gimbal head or a mono-pod and you're good to go! I am loving the extra reach at 600mm which I needed very much. I would strongly recommend this lens to anyone needing extra reach and quality images at a great price.

If you enjoy outdoor/wildlife photography this is a must have. Admittedly I am a amateur, but this lens makes me feel like a pro. Took some time getting used to it and highly recommend shooting from a tripod. I am loving everything about this purchase.

I have run this lens thru the ringer in 30 days. It bounced down a cliff with me, has been in the rain and even took a short unexpected swim with me. The pictures are sharp! Is it as sharp as 13k 600 mm prime lens? no but for under 2k it is a great lens. I use it on a D750 and a D780.

So far So good

I am new to photography and still learning a lot. This lens has been fun so far and has been easy to use and learn. I have it on a very sturdy tripod as it is big and heavy. It does make a weird humming type sound at times which is annoying as well.

should really be a 4.9999 star review

Images are sharp on all settings from 150,200, 300, etc.up to 600. Super impressed and waited for the price on the daily deal and got it for 1499. Coming from a canon 70-200 some will say its backwards the zoom vs focus rings. The zoom ring does take effort to turn it---- I did see that the USB dock can adjust the zoom strength, but now I have to get the dock to make this adjustment. Will probably call in tech support and see how much of a difference it will make. But images are super sharp and worth every penny. You can shoot handheld but not for very long the lens is 7lbs. I shoot with a monopod and now in the market for a gimbal for the monopod.

question

Can I use this lens on my canon 7d ?
Asked by: Anonymous
I think it would be a great lens on a 7D. I'm a full frame Canon shooter, so I can't say IT's perfect on one! , but I don't see why it wouldn't be a very good sports and wildlife setup as long as you had enuff light. I do find myself shooting at ISOs around 1200 or so in order to have a fast enough shutter speed. If that produces sufficiently noise-free images on a 7d, then you'd be good to go. Autofocus is really good with this lens on my 5d mk3.
