Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports Overview

Versatile with its reach, the Canon EF-mount 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM from Sigma is a Sports-series lens offering a flexible telephoto zoom range, along with an advanced optical and physical design. A series of low dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range and contribute to greater clarity and color accuracy. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been employed to control ghosting and flare for improved contrast when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the optics is a Hyper Sonic Motor that provides especially fast and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override. An Optical Stabilizer also works to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, a rotating tripod collar is integrated into the lens's design to suit working atop a tripod or monopod.

As part of the Sports line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to offer excellent optical performance, speed, and other customizable features that make it an ideal choice for wildlife, sports, action, and other fast-moving subjects.
Telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 240-960mm equivalent focal length range.
Two F Low Dispersion (FLD) and three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements are featured in the optical design and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), along with a rear focus system, realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Dust- and splash-resistant design suits this lens's use in inclement weather conditions and a water- and oil-repellent coating has also been applied to the front and rear elements to aid in cleaning.
Constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. Additionally, a brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity.
Zoom lock switch can be activated at any focal length to prevent accidental and unwanted zoom adjustment.
A fixed, rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.
Compatible with optional Sigma TC-1401 1.4x and TC-2001 2x teleconverters.

Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports Reviews

Great lens if lighting ideal

I extremely pleased with this lens on my Canon 5D Mark IV in ideal lighting. Last night during my son's Friday night football game, I had it as wide open as I could, ISO as high as possible, and shutter speed where it needed to be to freeze the action. The pics are so grainy, and I'm so sad and dissapointed. In daylight, this lens is awesome. I am a Canon girl, through and through, and have all L glass except for my nifty 50 mm 1.4, which has served me perfectly well these last 15 years. Because I'm not in business anymore and am just shooting my sons and their teams for fun and foe the other parents, I didn't want to invest in L glass for this purpose. I may try to get a media pass to see if I can be on/right next to the field, but I do enjoy sitting up high in our seats and seeing the bigger picture better. I gave this lens 3 stars bc I will mainly be using it under the Friday (and Wednesday) night lights, that is dissapointing. Hopefully I will have more opportunity to use it in ideal lighting.

Review of Sigma 150-600 sport

I have used Sigma's 150-600mm sports lens f mount Nikon for about two weeks to shoot sports. Let me first say the build quality is impeccable, but with it comes a heavier lens. I don't mind the weight and a monopod really decreases that issue. The zoom ring is a bit tight and requires a 1/2 extra turn to get from 150 to 600. The sigmas focus speed is fairly descent, no where in the park of my Nikon 300 f2.8 but for youth sports it works well enough. Images are soft above 450 and the fstop change of 5-6.3 is a bit disappointing for a 2k plus lens. This is definitely an out door bright daylight lens! I use to own Sigmas 120-300 f2.8 which is stellar. Sigma also makes a prime 500 f4 which runs about 6000k, I wish I had saved a little longer and tried that one out. Overall if you need the reach of 600 and don't mind images not being tack sharp on the long end, I would recommend the lens. To save your self money and weight I would suggest Sigma's Contemporary 150-600mm, it is half the price and can be hand held.

So far, impressed

I've only had this (used) lens for a few days, so the experience is limited. But I must say, so far I am impressed. I've paired it with an R6 and ef/rf adapter. The focus seems reasonably fast and sharp and compares to my beloved 70-200 f/2.8. There doesn't seem to be too much color fringing (chromatic aberration) and I don't really notice the gradients that others have complained about. Even at f/6.3 the backgrounds are obliterated. I can't wait to take this out for big game. I will say, when others comment that this is a heavy beast, heed their words. This is nearly double the 70-200. For me, a tripod and gimble is 100% necessary. There's no way I could hold this monster steady for more than 5 minutes or so. Additionally, I find the zoom ring to be a little difficult to turn. We already know the focus and zoom rings are in opposite locations from Canon made lenses. That adds to the awkwardness for me. However, this isn't bad enough to make me dislike the lens. Just something to be aware of. Start working those hand muscles now. Outside of those two details, so far I'm very pleased with this purchase. I've bought several preowned items from BH and have the utmost confidence each time. They stand by their warranty and return policies. I will be continue to be a loyal customer.

Great Lens

I purchased this lens to have a lens with longer reach than my Canon EF 100-400L is capable of. I have not been disappointed. The photos are sharp and the lens is a joy to use. Well built and feels like a more expensive lens than it is. Along with it being well built comes some extra weight, however, the weight is manageable and very easy to hand hold to photograph birds in flight. I highly recommend this lens and B&H gave me a great deal on it as always. I also highly recommend B&H, I have been a loyal customer for a lot of years.

So far, so good.

This seems to be a very quality piece of glass. I haven't had too much of a chance to use it and as i get more opportunities to use it, I may update my rating.

This lens is massive! I compared it to my Canon 70-200mm, making it look like a prime lens. I'm pairing it with my Canon 5D IV, which produces lovely images straight from the camera. Seeing what I can capture outdoors with natural light would be nice.

Starting bird and animal photography and this lens was a reasonable price point starting place. So far I am very pleased with the results. Tried handholding and that lasted about 30 minutes. Bought a Wimberley WH-200 and problem solved. Back in business. Once I had the gimbal setup correctly subject acquisition was quick and easy. Very happy with the results and really happy that I bought the gimbal!

Everytime I used this lens I like it more ..

I tested the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary and the Canon RF 110-500mm against the Sigma 150-600mm Sports and sent photos to some of my friends ... the Sigma 150-600mm Sports came ahead about 80% of the time. I was able to tell the difference so decided that it was the best purchase for the money. I shot a nephew's baseball game and got some good action shots (it was about 10 a.m. so plenty of light - did not use a tripod or monopod) ... I am uploading some bird photos where I used a tripod (at sunset if there is movement you will get some blur) .. I took the sun at sunset just resting on a car door and I took the moon with a tripod and 10 second delay to avoid movement .. I am really pleased with this lens; definitely worth the price .. Hope this is helpful

question

Can I use this lens on my canon 7d ?
Asked by: Anonymous
I think it would be a great lens on a 7D. I'm a full frame Canon shooter, so I can't say IT's perfect on one! , but I don't see why it wouldn't be a very good sports and wildlife setup as long as you had enuff light. I do find myself shooting at ISOs around 1200 or so in order to have a fast enough shutter speed. If that produces sufficiently noise-free images on a 7d, then you'd be good to go. Autofocus is really good with this lens on my 5d mk3.
