Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporar... Overview

By B&H Photo's

Offering an impressively versatile range with a portable form factor, the Canon EF-mount 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM from Sigma is a Contemporary-series telephoto zoom characterized by its sophisticated optics and flexible handling. One FLD element and three SLD elements are used to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and a Super Multi-Coating also helps to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Balancing the optical design, this lens also features a Hyper Sonic Motor, which provides especially fast and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override. An Optical Stabilizer also works to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, a removable, rotating tripod collar is included to suit working atop a tripod or monopod.

As part of the Contemporary line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance between convenience and performance, and meshes a compact, lightweight build and versatile handling with notable optical attributes.
Telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 240-960mm equivalent focal length range.
One F Low Dispersion (FLD) and three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements are featured in the optical design and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), along with a rear focus system, realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Dust- and splash-resistant design suits this lens's use in inclement weather conditions and a water- and oil-repellent coating has also been applied to the front element to aid in cleaning.
Constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. Additionally, a brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity.
Zoom lock switch can be activated at any focal length to prevent accidental and unwanted zoom adjustment.
Compatible with optional Sigma TC-1401 1.4x and TC-2001 2x teleconverters.
A removable, rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Sharp lens!

I am in love with this lens. The focus is fast and sharp, the length is incredible, and the build feels really solid. It's definitely a heavy lens but not bad considering what all it can do. Definitely worth the price!

This was my first leap into a long lens. Until now, I had stayed strictly with Canon lenses, acquiring several L lenses over the years as I could afford them. I was somewhat apprehensive to wander away from Canon to a third party. I needn't have been, as I am absolutely floored with the sharpness of this lens. I'll save all the technical jargon for others more eloquent, but for the price, this lens delivers big time, and I will enjoy it for years.

I have used this lens to shoot a college football game from the sidelines and I was very impressed. Great focus and sharpness. I haven't used it under stadium lights yet but I am expecting the same great results.

I love sigma. I already have the 18-35 & 50-100 1.8 lens that are perfect for my scarlet-w. This now completes my lens kit to have a long telephoto for action sports. Tested it at an off-road short track shoot and the 600mm long end was super handy to have. Footage looks great, lens is sharp.

Sigmas incredible150-600mm C lens.

Great lens! I have the 150-600mm Sport lens that I had been using for almost 4 years. I am approaching 73 years old and the 6.2 pound weight of the Sport lens was beginning to take its toll. Even though the Contemporary lens is only 2.2 pounds less weight, it makes a huge difference when you have to carry it around all day. I find that I have been getting a much higher percentage of sharp keepers with the C lens. I love it. I use it mainly for wildlife and birds in flight photography. With the advent of ON1 imaging software with its NoNoise AI and several other features, I do not worry about higherISO values at all. I have shots done at ISO 51,200 that, when using no noise from ON1, are absolutely beautiful.

I shopped around before deciding on the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 HSM Contemporary lens for my Nikon Z6 (used with an adapter). I have been using the lens exclusively for wildlife photography all spring and summer, taking literally thousands of shots. The lens is fast and reliable. the detail that I get in manual focus is impressive. I've gotten nothing but positive feedback on my wildlife posted photos, and look forward to the fall season of shooting.

I absolutely love this lens!

The results have been incredible. The clarity of the image is beautiful. It is a bit heavy. I found that using a monopod is necessary.

Very happy with this new lens. Have more to learn as I get used to using it. The bird pictures are great at how close it makes them appear. Also customer service at B&H was outstanding.

Should I get Teleconverter with sigma 150-600
Asked by: Pam
Whether or not you “should” depends entirely on what kind of shooting you want to do, whether the potential loss of sharpness and/or contrast, and the real loss of a stop or two, is worth being able to reach that far. Plus, you have to consider what body you’ll be using and it’s ability to autofocus at stops lower that f8.

What's the difference between the sport and the contemporary
Asked by: Geoffrey
Basically it's the materials and the build of the lens ... the sport is more durable, water and dust resistant. The sport is definitely built for long outdoor exposure to the elements. All that being said I shoot surfing with the Contemporary model all the time and have had no issues. I just limit it's exposure on high wind (dusty) or rainy days. I'm very happy with mine.
