Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporar... Overview

By B&H Photo's

Offering an impressively versatile range with a portable form factor, the Canon EF-mount 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM from Sigma is a Contemporary-series telephoto zoom characterized by its sophisticated optics and flexible handling. One FLD element and three SLD elements are used to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and a Super Multi-Coating also helps to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Balancing the optical design, this lens also features a Hyper Sonic Motor, which provides especially fast and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override. An Optical Stabilizer also works to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, a removable, rotating tripod collar is included to suit working atop a tripod or monopod.

As part of the Contemporary line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance between convenience and performance, and meshes a compact, lightweight build and versatile handling with notable optical attributes.
Telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 240-960mm equivalent focal length range.
One F Low Dispersion (FLD) and three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements are featured in the optical design and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), along with a rear focus system, realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Dust- and splash-resistant design suits this lens's use in inclement weather conditions and a water- and oil-repellent coating has also been applied to the front element to aid in cleaning.
Constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. Additionally, a brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity.
Zoom lock switch can be activated at any focal length to prevent accidental and unwanted zoom adjustment.
Compatible with optional Sigma TC-1401 1.4x and TC-2001 2x teleconverters.
A removable, rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Great Lens

I bought this to try my hand at some bird and wildlife photography for a Florida trip I had in February. I have to say I was quite pleased! I found many of my shots nice and sharp. Its auto focus worked quick and worked well with my camera to maintain focus on moving targets. The lens is on the heavy side, but I personally didn't have much issue with hand holding it, and it's stabilization worked like a charm. I ended up using it hand held majority of the time because my one critique was the foot on this lens only had one threaded hole, and no matter how tight I made it, it would start to twist on my arca plate and come loose. If this had two screw holes or a built in arca design, I would give this 5 stars. All in all I would recommend this lens, it performed well, feels sturdy and well built and I'm glad I have it in my lens collection.

Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens for Canon EF works great on my Canon M50 Mark II. It's a bit on the heavy side but the tripod handles the weight well with the attached mounting ring. Gathers light pretty well, but I haven't tried it out in low light setting. The pics I have taken, mostly of birds, turned out well using both the Auto & Manual focus. All in all, its a 5 out of 5 for the photography I do.

This is my largest lens, after my Canon 70-200 L IS. So far I am quite pleased with its performance and quality, for the price especially. B &H were excellent in service. I had it in my hands in the middle of the USA, 22 hours after ordering.

Nice and Affordable

I purchased this lens for my Canon T7i to photograph wildlife when my shorter lens just wouldnt do. Glad I did! I'm still getting used to the features but so far the photos appear sharp. Coming from a 250mm lens, the extra weight took some getting used to at first. The lens also came with a USB dock for calibration and customization but I don't feel confident enough to try it yet; afraid I'll mess something up. I would have liked a Canon lens with internal zoom but the Sigma lens was much more affordable and works well for my needs. Good purchase.

So glad I chose Sigma after using another brand prior to ordering this one. Pictures are much sharper with the Sigma.

Not As Good As Its Brothers

I now own all three of Sigma's current zoom lens for EF mounts which top out at 600 mm. I bought the Contemporary in the hope that, despite it lack of weather sealing and sophisticated lens coatings, its optics would be good enough for me to choose to carry it in warm dry months hiking, because of its significant weight advantage. I tested my copy of the 150-600 Contemporary against both my 150 to 600 Sports and my 60-600 Sports, and concluded that of the three, the Contemporary came in last. The 150-600 Sports delivered the sharpest and best overall images in every situation within its zoom range. In the range of 150-600 mm the 60-600 mm lens was a close second, requiring about one stop down to achieve similar sharpness. The Contemporary produced good sharp images with adequate front and side lighting, but like the 60-600, required a stop down to achieve comparable sharpness. Unfortunately, the Contemporary produced inferior images in backlit situations and low light ones. To me, it seems unlikely that I will use the contemporary much, since its only advantage (weight) is insufficient for me to want to carry it while hiking when the 60-600 mm will allow me to shoot closer subjects and deliver superior images over all.

Should I get Teleconverter with sigma 150-600
Asked by: Pam
Whether or not you “should” depends entirely on what kind of shooting you want to do, whether the potential loss of sharpness and/or contrast, and the real loss of a stop or two, is worth being able to reach that far. Plus, you have to consider what body you’ll be using and it’s ability to autofocus at stops lower that f8.

What's the difference between the sport and the contemporary
Asked by: Geoffrey
Basically it's the materials and the build of the lens ... the sport is more durable, water and dust resistant. The sport is definitely built for long outdoor exposure to the elements. All that being said I shoot surfing with the Contemporary model all the time and have had no issues. I just limit it's exposure on high wind (dusty) or rainy days. I'm very happy with mine.
