Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporar... Overview

Offering an impressively versatile range with a portable form factor, the Canon EF-mount 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM from Sigma is a Contemporary-series telephoto zoom characterized by its sophisticated optics and flexible handling. One FLD element and three SLD elements are used to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and a Super Multi-Coating also helps to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Balancing the optical design, this lens also features a Hyper Sonic Motor, which provides especially fast and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override. An Optical Stabilizer also works to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, a removable, rotating tripod collar is included to suit working atop a tripod or monopod.

As part of the Contemporary line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance between convenience and performance, and meshes a compact, lightweight build and versatile handling with notable optical attributes.
Telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 240-960mm equivalent focal length range.
One F Low Dispersion (FLD) and three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements are featured in the optical design and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), along with a rear focus system, realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Dust- and splash-resistant design suits this lens's use in inclement weather conditions and a water- and oil-repellent coating has also been applied to the front element to aid in cleaning.
Constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. Additionally, a brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity.
Zoom lock switch can be activated at any focal length to prevent accidental and unwanted zoom adjustment.
Compatible with optional Sigma TC-1401 1.4x and TC-2001 2x teleconverters.
A removable, rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporar... Reviews

Pretty good bang for the buck...

I've had Sigma lenses in the past and they always performed quite well. I wanted a 600mm lens and couldn't go fifteen grand on the Nikon 600 f/4 so I gave this Sig a shot. Quite impressed, and most will be happy knowing a couple things. It has image stabilization, but a tripod is a MUST. (same for the long Nikon) Its also a bit slow so a camera with good high ISO is an advantage. Its also heavy...aren't all 600s? I've only had a short time with the lens but its performing past my expectations.....Pretty darn good, especially considering the price I paid.

The lens we needed.

High quality. Sharpness of images. Just what we needed. Live in Costa Rica in a wooded area through which a large brook flows. This lens allows us to bring near the birds that were too far away to record the subtle colors we can now photograph.

A definite keeper

I had some reluctance on this purchase after having used the Canon 100-400L for so long. My fear quickly disappeared after only a few minutes getting used to the lens. Though I purchased the usb dock, I haven't had any reason to use it. Focus is fast and dead on throughout the ranges. It's solid and not hard to shoot hand held. Stabilization works well in both modes. Shipping was very fast and great tracking updates keeping me in the loop on delivery. A definite keeper.

I normally use a 300 mm lens but found my pictures couldn't catch the subjects well and at the far end, a but blurry. The Sigma gives me greater range and crystal clear pictures!

Haven't had this long but so far very happy with how it operates and goes nice with my new Canon 90D that I also got from B&H. Focus is smooth and pictures are great. I spent a fair amount of time looking at reviews/recommendations and very satisfied so far.

The lense delivers sharp photos and focuses quickly on a Nikon D850. Photoshop 6 or above corrects the pin cushion perfectly.

Good birding lens

Lens functions well. the 100-600 mm zoom is fantastic for birding. I like the option to set autofocus to Full; 2.8m to 10m; or 10m to infinity - speeds up autofocus when you know your range. Pictures are clear and crisp. AF works well with Canon mount. I am using it with a monopod that creates easy movement and takes the weight off my shoulders, the day I shot holding the rig gave me a neck ache - working good with the monopod. Lack of tolerance for mist/light rain is a drawback from Sports lens, but the Contemporary lens is functional in good weather and away from water spray.

Should I get Teleconverter with sigma 150-600
Asked by: Pam
Whether or not you “should” depends entirely on what kind of shooting you want to do, whether the potential loss of sharpness and/or contrast, and the real loss of a stop or two, is worth being able to reach that far. Plus, you have to consider what body you’ll be using and it’s ability to autofocus at stops lower that f8.

What's the difference between the sport and the contemporary
Asked by: Geoffrey
Basically it's the materials and the build of the lens ... the sport is more durable, water and dust resistant. The sport is definitely built for long outdoor exposure to the elements. All that being said I shoot surfing with the Contemporary model all the time and have had no issues. I just limit it's exposure on high wind (dusty) or rainy days. I'm very happy with mine.
